About the Grades
• “Normal distribution” IS NOT used, i.e. all
students can get a 5, if they do well in the
  course.
• No University level assessment criteria.
• Grades and credits do not have any
connection, i.e. all students will receive the
same number of credits (for the same amount
of work), but can receive a different grade.
• Students are not usually compared with each
other on the basis of their grades.

                                     JYU. Since 1863. 3.9.2018 31

About the Academic Atmosphere
• Casual but respectful relationship with professors and other staff: students
call their teachers by their (first) names, not by their titles.
• The informal ”you = sinä”, is generally used instead of the formal address,
    “you = te”.
• Even many professors dress casually
• Feedback collected at the end of each course (through Korppi).
• You can also ask for feedback about your performance.
• Teachers & other staff often have weekly appointment hours, please
    respect them.
• Easy to contact staff by e-mail, though some of the teachers may not
    prefer – please check.
• Be precise in your e-mails: state the topic clearly in the subject field,
mention the code/name of the course, use your name as it is written in
    Korppi.
• Please allow enough time for the staff to answer your e-mails, do not
    expect an immediate answer.
