Hardwood Ontario Cup#1 Presented by Trek Store Barrie/Aurora July 25, 2021 Technical Guide V 4.0 July 15, 2021
General Information
Pulse Racing is excited to restart Ontario Cup racing at Ontarios’ premier mountain bike facility, Hardwood Ski & Bike.
Hardwood is famous as the site of 2015 Pan Am Games MTB and numerous National events. We assure you the Ontario
Cup event will be a more friendly course to encourage new racers and work us all back to racing.
The Ontario Cup MTB Series is one of Canada’s premier XC Mountain Bike racing series. Accommodating to a wide
range of skill, the OCup series provides participants with challenging courses and viable competitive opportunities against
riders of similar skill level from across the province. The OCup series will include all 4 races to determine the Ontario
Cup series champion. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 MTB Race Series will be following government
enforced spacing and gathering protocols. As such, the 2021 MTB season will be composed of races with individual starts
allowing for distancing. These events are currently only proposed and will have to comply with outdoor gathering limits
in addition to other COVID-19 protocols.

The Ontario Cycling Association and the event organizers are committed to creating a safe sporting environment for all
participants, officials and spectators. With that in mind it is essential that all event participants agree and understand that
participating in an event during a pandemic presents certain challenges that will require the community to overcome. The
current situation related to the global pandemic is very dynamic and requires us to be understanding the
ongoing changes and challenges. The rules, guidance and regulations change frequently and are subject to local
interpretations that may at times be in conflict with each other, we are doing our best to interpret and apply how that
applies to event scenarios.

What we are doing:
  • Detailed and flexible COVID Safety Plans
  • Dedicated on site COVID compliance coordinator
  • Additional sanitization, PPE and signage
  • Training for volunteers, staff and Commissaires
  • Applying appropriate design principles to start, finish and stage areas to encourage safe participation

What are asking:
  • Be flexible, understanding and patient
  • Self check - be healthy and follow the provincial health guidelines
  • Keep your distance when possible
  • Wash your hands!
  • Practise safe respiratory etiquette (sneezing, coughing, spitting)
  • Respect mask mandatory areas
  • Please follow all on site expectation

Ontario Cup Points & Series Champion
Ontario Cup points are awarded to all categories listed above. DNF riders (riders who do not finish) are not entitled to
OCup points. OCup points are different than upgrade points. OCup points earned in the lower category will be divided by
3 and each lower category race will count as one race. For example, a rider who earns 9 OCups points in each of their 3
sport races, then upgrades to expert will earn 3 OCup points for each of these individual sport races. In the overall expert
series, all four race results are used for tabulation. Each of the sport events would count as one individual expert event
with 3 OCup points. For clarification, please contact the OCA office. Season ending OCup XC point totals will be based
on the rider’s results and participation in all four OCup races. In the event of a tie at the end of the season, the Series
Champion will be decided by the individual who had the highest finish at the final race of the series. In the event that this
does not break the tie, the individual with the most wins in the series will be declared the winner.

Prizes
Due to COVID protocol podiums and awards will not be presented.
Results will be available online in real time.

Team Areas
Should teams be permitted to set up a team area, it is the sole responsibility of team leadership to create and maintain a
safe space that is compliant with local regulation and expectations The following expectations should be considered a
minimum:
• Set tents and structures to encourage maximum air flow (at least two full open sides)
• Maintain social distancing
• Masks should be worn when not racing, eating, or drinking
• Clean and disinfect high touch surfaces (coolers, tools etc)
• Avoid sharing equipment
• Maintain a log of persons that are permitted in the team area
• Register for team space by emailing request to glenn@pulseracing.ca

Course Description
The Ontario Cup will have a full 11 km course and a shortened 9 km course. Riders may ride one or two laps of either 11
km or 9 km depending on category.

Pre-riding & Course Inspection
Hardwood Ski & Bike is a commercial mountain bike facility requiring trail ticket for access. Make sure that you are
respecting official training and pre-riding times. Trespassing outside of official training/pre-ride times will not be
tolerated, anyone found to be in violation will be banned from participation and information will be forwarded to the OCA
for possible further discipline.
Pre-rides are only intended to give you an idea of the race course, as course conditions, trail width and obstacles on the
trail may change. A mountain bike course is not a permanent, as it evolves with weather, moisture content, number of
riders, and changes that we must perform to make it safer.
Please pre-ride with extra care as the race course is not fully marked, closed to other riders and our marshals and safety
crews are not on course. Treat pre-riding as just another mountain bike ride and ride within control and with maximum
caution.

Event Rules
         General Rules & Regulations
     • The event will be run under UCI rules with Ontario Cycling Association/Cycling Canada modifications.
     • Races will start promptly at the indicated start times.
     • Any rider dropping out of the race shall immediately notify a commissaire.
     • Protests are considered from the point of the incident up to 15-minutes after the posting of results for the related
event. All protests are to be made to the chief commissaire. All determinations made by the commissaire are final.
     • Ontario Cup Series Points will be awarded for all categories, as per Ontario Cycling Association guidelines
     • Upgrade points will be awarded, as per Ontario Cycling Association guidelines

         Equipment Restrictions/ Regulations
     • Approved helmets are mandatory at all times while riding a bicycle at Hardwood.
     • Per CCA rule 1.3.031 N): At all times when participating in or preparing for an event held in Canada, all licensees
who are mounted on a bicycle shall wear a securely fastened helmet that meets a recognized cycling standard for
the specific discipline. Riders shall provide documented proof of this, such as a manufacturer’s label, upon
       request by event officials.
     • The use of cameras (helmet mounted, mounted on the bicycle, or worn on the body) is not permitted by athletes
       during competition.

         Staging & Start Protocol

Riders are to report to start staging are 3 minutes prior to start and follow instructions for maintaining proper
distancing.
Race Officials will start each rider.

        Course Marking
     • Course Marking uses barricade or caution tape to close off intersections. This tape is affixed to trees, stakes and
strung across pathways or along pathways to show riders where to go, or where not to go. Barricade tape can
show participants where not to go, or it can be used to outline the outside (or inside) of a corner, or to keep riders
       out of a certain area.
     • Course Marking uses arrows on chloroplast to indicate direction on the course
     • Two arrows down indicate CAUTION SLOW. We may include a CAUTION sign below as well.
     • Some sections of course allow for “Easy” or “Hard” options (other terms might be used) where riders have a
choice on which line they want to make. The “Hard” option is more difficult than the “Easy” option, and
generally it is also takes less time.

        Feed Zones and Technical Assistance
There will not be any feed or technical assistance permitted. The individual start format is an unassisted race format. The
race is relatively short, so feed zone is not required. Riders should be prepared to deal with own technical issues.

        Bad Weather/Course Changes
    • Changes to the course may be required in case of severe weather or changing atmospheric conditions. Changes
will be announced at the start of all races. In all conditions riders should ensure they are riding within their limits
and dismount if the terrain exceeds their technical comfort level.
