A programme of CPD for Heads of Careers
Spring Term 2016
Last year COA launched a new Certificate in Leading and Managing Careers Work in Schools, led by
David Andrews OBE. Twenty-four heads of careers completed the course. We are pleased to be offering
this well-respected programme of professional development again in 2016.

The Certificate in Leading and Managing Careers Work in Schools has been designed principally for
recently-appointed heads of careers. Although applications are welcome from newly-appointed heads
of careers, experience has shown that participants benefit from having had a year’s experience in
the role before starting the course. Applications are also welcome from more experienced heads of
careers who wish to review and refresh the careers work in their schools, and from careers advisers
working with schools who wish to increase their knowledge and understanding of careers work.

The course will cover:
zz an overview of careers education and guidance (CEG) in schools
zz an examination of the changing labour market, developments in education and the nature of
      careers in the 21st century
zz a review of CEG national policy and local practice
zz an introduction to theories of occupational choice and career development
zz careers information – careers library and teaching research skills
zz the careers education curriculum – aims, objectives, curriculum models
zz careers guidance – principles and practice
zz preparing students for HE
zz work experience and work-shadowing
zz use of ICT in careers work
zz continuous improvement of CEG: monitoring, review and development planning
zz the role of careers leader
zz effective leadership and management of careers work in schools
zz professional development for CEG
zz organising school-based INSET.

The course will provide opportunities to:
zz prepare for the role of careers leader in school
zz progress on to further CPD opportunities, including Masters programmes
zz meet other careers leaders
zz share experiences with fellow course members
zz review and develop CEG policy and practice in your school.

The course will be organised over three Fridays/Saturdays:

      22nd and 23rd January 2016
      11th and 12th March 2016
      13th and 14th May 2016

“The course has exceeded expectations. The practical exercises

      71-77 Pall Mall

overnight on the Thursdays and Fridays they should make their own accommodation arrangements
and cover their own travel costs. Please note that the course fee does include a special dinner on the
first night of the course.

Times
Friday sessions will start at 9.30am and finish at 4.30pm.
Saturday sessions will start at 9.30am and finish at 4.00pm.

Certification and progression
On completion of the course participants will be given a certificate of attendance, which will give full
details of what the programme of professional development covered and which can be included in
their CPD portfolios. Participants will be given the opportunity to complete a written assignment based
on some review and development work in their schools and this too will be recorded on the certificate.
The course is non-award bearing but offers potential progression on to postgraduate certificates,
diplomas and Masters opportunities.

“Really helped to inform me about the role, especially
with a view to discussing with the senior management
team how we might restructure CIAG in school.”

About COA
For over 25 years Cambridge Occupational Analysts has worked with more than 3,000 schools in the UK
and across the globe in over 50 countries to deliver a fully comprehensive range of careers and higher
education programmes including aptitude tests. The technical quality of the programmes is paramount
and they are continually developed and checked throughout the year.

Our advisers and interviewers are all professionally qualified, with many years of careers and higher
education experience working in schools, the careers service or careers consultancies. They work with
young people and offer information and advice on a one-to-one or group basis, assisting schools in
meeting IAG objectives.

For nine years, from 2003 to 2012, COA ran a Postgraduate Certificate of Professional Studies in
Leading and Managing Careers Work in Schools in partnership with the University of Cambridge Faculty
of Education. The course was led by David Andrews OBE, as an affiliated lecturer at the Faculty of
Education. Although the Faculty is no longer offering any Professional Development courses, we are
pleased to be continuing to work with David to offer a programme of professional development for
careers leaders (or heads of careers) in schools.

David Andrews OBE
Course leader, David Andrews OBE, works as an independent education
consultant, trainer, researcher and writer specialising in career education and
guidance. He leads courses for careers co-ordinators and careers advisers,
provides consultancy to local authorities, schools and careers companies
and has spoken at numerous conferences. David is a Fellow of the National
Institute for Careers Education and Counselling (NICEC) and was an affiliated
lecturer at the University of Cambridge’s Faculty of Education for many years.
He is currently working on a research project for the Institute for Employment
Research at the University of Warwick, looking at the links between employers
and schools and the role of the National Careers Service.

David is an honorary life member of the Career Development Institute (CDI). In 2011 he authored
Careers Education in Schools, a book on the history of the development of careers education in schools
and which goes on to critically examine current policy, practice and possibilities for the future. Before
moving into freelance work in 1998, he taught in secondary schools and then worked as an advisory
teacher in a careers service and an LEA adviser. David has worked as an adviser to the DfEE, the DfES
and the DCSF.
