Chandler Chamber Living Magazine 3Board Chair/CEO Update
Lori Gallegos, First Credit Union
Board Chair, Chandler Chamber of Commerce
Summer in Arizona is vacation season and for many Arizonians it inspires trips out of town to cooler weather.
What many don’t realize is that when we celebrate vacation season, our nonprofits and charities are strained.
Fewer people in town means less donations toward food, clothing and shelter in our community for our underserved.
Nonprofits that rely on volunteers often have a smaller pool to tap during summer months. Among the hardest hit are organizations that
depend on schools and businesses for group efforts. Many children count on food from programs at their schools and during the summer,
the local nonprofits strive to pick up the slack. Although many businesses are engaged year-round, summer participation can drop because
at any given time, fewer employees are at work to help out.
There are ways we (as a community) can help and support these important organizations: Reach out to local charities, especially those that
could use extra help in the summer! Does the local library need assistance with summer reading programs? What about summer camps or
educational enrichment programs? Chances are there’s an organization or event where your time, talents and/or treasure will make a valua-
ble difference. A great place to start is the Chandler Chamber’s website: Click on the tab on our home page that says, ‘Chandler Gives
Back’! You’ll be taken to our nonprofit website with 39 charities and nonprofit organizations listed with their needs.
Whatever your summer plans, whether enjoying a staycation or getting out of town, try not to take a vacation from summer giving. In many
cases, you’ll be making a difference when it matters most.

Keeping cool as we move into the deep heat of the summer and monsoon season, is always a challenge here
in the Valley of the Sun. That is why I am here to offer some fabulous suggestions of Chamber members who
can entertain and keep you cool at the same time!
Chandler Fashion Center is a great place to shop and exercise—as mall walkers will tell you! Located in the mall is the new Crayola
Experience. If you haven’t been there yet, it is a must see for kids of all ages featuring , of course, coloring taken to a whole new level!
Create a runway model and watch her walk the runway when you finish your creation.
Swingin’ Safari Mini Golf offers a single indoor 18-hole glow-in-the-dark mini golf course while immersing players into a jungle story
with fun sets depicting parts of the story. Bounce-a-rama Chandler is an indoor inflatable theme park where kids can run off some of
that
incredible energy kids have while parents can keep cool and enjoy a nice snack bar. Burst of Butterflies Create and Paint Studio lets
you explore your creative side with painting, pottery, glass fusing and more! If bowling is your thing, AMF Chandler Lanes is the place
to be. If you enjoy crafts, AR Workshop always has creative projects for you to work on. If your kids enjoy extreme challenges,
Extreme Gravity Zone will keep the kids busy. The Lab, a basketball training/camp center has programs for the summer that sharpen
hand-eye coordination, perfect physical skill sets and promote team building.
Who doesn’t love summer movies! Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas says, “Come for the movies, stay for the air-conditioning!” Check out
the Flix Brewhouse Cinemas for the downtown Chandler experience and Harkins Theaters at Chandler Fashion Center!
These are just a few of our unique members who offer fun experiences and keep you cool as a cucumber. For more options this
summer, visit our business directory on the Chamber’s Website.
Chandler Chamber Living Magazine 4Chandler Mayor Update
Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke
City of Chandler
@ChandlerAZMayor
Chandler is an innovation and technology hub, and our City also has been dubbed the Self-Driving Capital
of the World in media reports. The physical and political landscape of Chandler makes for a perfect testing
ground for autonomous vehicle technology.
We have the right climate and driving conditions for data collection, Arizona boasts a positive political cli-
mate for self-driving vehicles, and we have miles of paved urban and suburban roadways and highways
that are great for testing. Chandler also is home to a number of major technology companies, which has
turned our resident base into one that embraces new technologies.
Recognizing this several years ago, the City focused efforts attracting industry leaders in AV technology and
developing new partnerships within this industry to implement into City services and planning.
We have a number of autonomous vehicle industry players located in Chandler today employing more
than 16,000 people citywide.
The City of Chandler has really embraced AV technologies. In 2018, we became the first city to amend our
zoning code to support AV and ride‐sharing implementation. The work that Chandler’s Police and Fire have
done with Waymo have become national models for the type of relationship public safety departments
should have with emerging technologies. We are taking a long-term look at the future of mobility as we
develop infrastructure and update our Transportation Master Plan.
Last month we announced a new partnership with Waymo. This autonomous vehicle ride‐hailing program
allows select City employees to use the service for travel to and from business meetings. We will evaluate
employee productivity and potential fleet services cost savings. We are excited to be the first in the nation
to create this type of partnership and look forward to the possibilities that this brings about.

Class 36
Life & Leisure
On Friday, June 21st the Community
Foundation Leadership Institute class
learned the importance of work-life
balance. They familiarized themselves
with Chandler Recreational areas and
entertainment. The class first went to the
San Marcos Golf Resort to start off the
day learning about how they can improve balance in their lives. The class then continued at the San Marcos Golf Resort for
a putting activity where class member Dennis Aust won the longest putt!
They then traveled to the Chandler Center for the Arts where they toured the
facility and Kim Moyers, Cultural Development Director for the City of
Chandler, presented all entertainment options Chandler offers.
In the afternoon, the group toured Alamo Drafthouse and heard wonderful
thoughts from owners Craig and Derek. A tour of Tumbleweed Park was next
on the agenda, where a presentation from current class member, Steve Erno,
Acting Community Services Director for the City of Chandler, discussed many
recreation options in Chandler. Later on, the class toured the Vision Gallery
and finished out the day at QuartHaus. By the end of the day, the class was
able to discover leisure activities such as parks, aquatics, recreation classes,
museums and other entertainment that Chandler has to offer.
On July 19th, the class will experience ‘Health Day’ with an agenda that
explores the healthcare services offered in Chandler.
