“Spring passes and one remembers one's innocence.
Summer passes and one remembers one's exuberance.
Autumn passes and one remembers one's reverence.
Winter passes and one remembers one's perseverance.”
                                                                           Yoko Ono
It’s difficult programming the autumn/winter brochure
when its 28 degrees outside, but the vision is there to
create plenty of shows that will warm you up in the
                                    pending winter months.
Our film programme continues, offering the chance to see
films, you may not have caught first time round – Birdman, The Second Best Exotic Marigold
Hotel, Selma and Cinderella for our youngsters. The National Theatre Live will be streaming
The Beaux Stratagem, Coriolanus and Benedict Cumberbatch in Hamlet. There will also be a
streaming of Verdi’s Aida from Sydney.
There’s music from Ben Montague, Ralph McTell, Joe Longthorne, The Fortunes, The Blues
Band, Barbara Dickson and Leo Sayer. Tributes to Abba, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner & Neil
Diamond. Talks from Simon Weston, John Challis, and Professor Robert Winston, and drama
in the shape of Blood Brothers, Comic Potential, ..And This Is My friend Mr Laurel, The Snow
Queen and White Christmas, not to mention hypnosis with Paul Hazell, our Christmas Comedy
Gala and the return of those naughty Forbidden Nights fresh from their appearance on Britain’s
Got Talent! The year will finish in traditional style with the family favourite Snow White & The
Seven Dwarfs.
I think you’ll agree there’s something there for everyone, and enough to take your mind of those
cold dark nights. I hope you’ll come and see at least one of the shows in this programme, and
tell everyone about our lovely intimate theatre.
Happy Christmas!!

THE BEAUX STRATAGEM
Simon Godwin (Man and Superman) directs
George Farquhar's wild comedy of love and cash.

The ‘Beaux’: Mr Aimwell and Mr Archer, two
charming, dissolute young men who have blown
their fortunes in giddy London. Shamed and
debt-ridden, they flee to provincial Lichfield.
Their ‘Stratagem’: to marry for money.

Lodged at the local inn, posing as master and
servant, they encounter a teeming variety of
human obstacles: a crooked landlord, a fearsome
highwayman, a fervent French Count, a maid on
the make, a drunken husband, a furious butler,
a natural healer and a strange, turbulent priest.

But their greatest obstacle is love. When the
Beaux meet their match in Dorinda and Mrs
Sullen they are most at risk, for in love they
might be truly discovered. TICKETS £12.00

BIRDMAN
Former cinema superhero Riggan Thomson
(Michael Keaton) is mounting an ambitious
Broadway production that he hopes will breathe
new life into his stagnant career. It's risky, but
he hopes that his creative gamble will prove
that he's a real artist and not just a washed-up
movie star.

As opening night approaches, a castmate is
injured, forcing Riggan to hire an actor (Edward
Norton) who is guaranteed to shake things up.
Meanwhile, Riggan must deal with his
girlfriend, daughter and ex-wife.

intriguing, funny and often poignant tale of

                                             OPERA AUSTRALIA IN CINEMAS
In AIDA, Verdi masterfully puts the intimate
affairs of the heart against the grandeur of the
universe: where kingdoms rise and fall and
the sands of time grind onwards.
There could be no grander setting for such an
opera than Sydney Harbour itself, awash with the light of the city and the Sydney Opera
House silhouetted against the setting sun.
Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour has become a huge part of the cultural landscape,
combining all of the things Sydney does best: world-class opera, champagne and fine
dining, sunsets and spectacle on the harbour's edge. It's a monumental undertaking, with
a team of more than 700 people involved in the project before a single note is heard over
the harbour. Aida is the biggest opera they've ever performed on the opera stage. But
amid all of the spectacle, the famous 'Triumphal March', battle scenes and ancient
temples, there's an emotional heart. Long after the fireworks have faded from the sky and
Amneris sings her quiet, concluding prayer, you'll see the true mastery of this opera: it is
at once an historic epic and an utterly relatable human tragedy.

This talented artist began his career over three
decades ago with appearances on Junior
Showtime, followed by a grounding on the tough
                                           Northern club circuit.
His big break came in 1981 when he was a

                                           and USA followed.
Joe's repertoire of voices is endless and
includes hundreds of the world's top singers,

                                AN EVENING WITH
                                SIMON WESTON OBE
Simon Weston is a former Welsh Guards soldier
who, with members of his regiment on RFA Sir
Galahad in Bluff Cove, was bombed and set on fire
by enemy Skyhawk fighters. The ship was carrying
                                  ammunition including phosphoric bombs and
thousands of gallons of diesel and petrol.
Twenty-two out of his platoon of thirty men were
killed; and Weston survived with 46% burns,
following which his face was barely recognisable.
Weston has since become friends with the
Argentine pilot who dropped the bomb.
Enduring years of reconstructive surgery, including over 70 major operations or
surgical procedures to make eyelids and to form a new nose, Weston suffered
psychological trauma, drinking heavily and becoming suicidal. Determined to feel
useful again Weston became patron of a number of charities that support people
living with disfigurements as well as speaking out against defence budget cuts.
Weston's courage and charity work have been recognised and honoured a number of
times. In 1992 he was awarded an OBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.
In 2009 Weston became President Elect of the Welsh Scout Council.

PROFESSOR ROBERT
WINSTON PRESENTS
WHAT MAKES US HAPPY?
READING THE HUMAN MIND
What led to French philosopher Michel de
Montaigne thanking fortune for the pain he
suffered? Or why did Mahler apparently stop
composing after his meeting in Holland with
Sigmund Freud? Why was Alfred J Prufrock in
T S Eliot’s poem so chronically depressed and
suffering so much lack of self-esteem? Shall we
ever really understand what makes us happy?
To some extent, the ability to be happy is inherited, but social scientists have emphasized
that various environmental influences – health, a stable society, economic advantages,
play a major role. Professor Winston examines the role of brain imaging, hormone study,
sexuality, child development, pharmacology and psychological research in understanding
how science may help us be happier. Happy people tend to live longer, and recent
research suggests we tend to get happier as we get older. Is this simply because we
become more forgetful? Can we make ourselves happier and if so, will knowledge of
brain function and how we might manipulate it give us more fulfilled lives?

                                      DAVID STARKEY PRESENTS
                                      MAGNA CARTA
David Starkey returns to Chequer Mead by popular
demand. In this talk the UK’s leading constitutional
historian, known for his forthright views, discusses
the 13th Century agreement, the Magna Carta,
which limited the power of the monarchy by stating
the basic rights, privileges and liberties of leading
                                      citizens and clergy.
There are few more stimulating thinkers, and few
who understand better the way the most powerful
have thought throughout our history. David’s
assessment of the situation then, and how our
constitution stands today exactly 800 years later, will amaze and challenge you.

THE BLUES BAND
The Blues Band – 35 Years and Back for More
Paul Jones, Dave Kelly, Tom McGuinness, Rob
Townsend and Gary Fletcher.
Many of the Blues Band’s 21st century fans
weren’t even born when these five virtuosos,
already music industry veterans, decided to fly
in the face of musical fashion in 1979 and form
a band ‘just to play the blues’. No one could
have predicted that, 35 years on, they’d still be
dazzling audiences with their showmanship and virtuosity. About 20 albums and
thousands of gigs later, they’ve earned a reputation around the world as one of the finest
exponents of the blues tradition in all its forms. With this line-up, it’s hardly surprising.
Other blues groups come and go, but it takes something special to achieve the iconic
prestige enjoyed by The Blues Band. If you want to know what 35 years of skill and
devotion sound like, here’s your chance - if you love the blues, it doesn’t get any better
than The Blues Band.

An exhibition of Contemporary Fine Art by Anthony John Gray and David Holden
whose contrasting styles complement each other. Holden focuses on abstract
expressionism through the process of mark making, whilst Gray’s work is all about
the technical aspects of painting which convey his ideas through Surrealism.
Both artists have spent the eighteen years sharing their ideas and skills with
students at Brambletye School where they are practicing artists.
