COLLEGE ADVISER FELLOW APPLICATION (2019-2020)
DCAC Program Information: As one of ten founding chapters of the College Advising Corps (CAC) the Destination College Advising Corps (DCAC)
was launched in 2007 with a vision of making college a viable option for all students and a goal of increasing the college-going rates of our partner
schools and districts. DCAC works in collaboration with partner schools and college access programs to support, assist, and supplement college access
and preparation efforts for all students using research-based best practices. DCAC provides comprehensive college awareness, mentorship, resources,
preparation, advising, and information through the efforts of a dedicated College Adviser Fellow.
DCAC College Adviser Fellow Description:
• DCAC College Adviser Fellows (under the advisement and purview of a Regional Manager, a full-time employee of UC Berkeley and recognized
expert in-college access programming) will learn the theory and receive coaching and field experiences in college access preparation, public
education, and youth service.
• DCAC College Adviser Fellows will be placed at a partner high school in Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara or Solano counties. College Adviser
Fellows may be placed in partnership with another Center for Educational Partnerships (CEP) program to include the Early Academic Outreach
Program (EAOP) and Solano County Educational Consortium (SCEC).
• DCAC College Adviser Fellows will participate in local and national research and data collection as specified by state and Federal agreements,
including the provision of intensive program activities by using evidence-based best practices of highly successful college access programs and
strategies that build college going culture through one-to-one, small group, classroom, and whole school efforts.
• DCAC College Adviser Fellows will be responsible for data collection, input, tracking and analysis of student and whole-school services. DCAC is a
student centered and data driven organization. Our program is committed to providing high quality services to students and improving
outcomes for college access through an ongoing cycle of continuous improvement. Our approach requires data collection, analysis, and
decision-making based on progress towards goals. College Adviser Fellows must be open to a process of formative assessment to learn what
works and does not work within the context of their schools. As such, regular data collection, entry and analysis is an essential function of each
DCAC College Adviser Fellow.
• Regional Managers will oversee day-to-day program efforts and activities and provide College Adviser Fellows with training and guidance in meeting
requirements of the program and professional development to promote leadership, careers in public service, research, and graduate school.
• With guidance from their Regional Managers, College Adviser Fellows will be expected to implement the following best practice program efforts
and activities: recruit and mentor a cohort of high school students; support partner school sites’ school-wide college preparation; and provide
cohort and non-cohort students with college access and preparation assistance, such as academic advising, college admissions applications,
financial aid applications, scholarship applications and SAT/ACT preparation/registration.
• DCAC College Adviser Fellows’ plans and goals may differ from site to site and may include activities beyond those indicated below in order to
meet partner and regional needs or the needs of the national research initiative. Specific College Adviser Fellow activities and goals will be
determined together with individual Regional Managers to meet specific partner and school site needs.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (2019-20)
1. What does it mean to be a DCAC College Adviser Fellow?
DCAC provides College Adviser Fellows an opportunity to gain experiential learning by providing Fellows with significant
hands-on field experience in education and college access. Fellows receive training, professional development,
supervision, and coaching to provide college preparation assistance to low-income, first-generation high school
students. Fellows complete their service on a full-time basis at a partner site.
DCAC has a strong public service ethic and a high performing culture that supports outstanding service to high school
students in order to increase college readiness, access, and success. While this is a fellowship experience, DCAC has high
expectations of Fellows and requires that professional standards and minimum service requirements be met. Each
College Adviser Fellow will have an opportunity to receive performance feedback twice a year from their Regional
Manager and/or Coordinator. This fellowship is 10 months in duration, beginning on August 1, 2018 and ending on May
31, 2019. If Fellows meet expectations/performance standards in their first year of the fellowship, they will be invited
back for a second 10-month term of service.
For a general explanation of what a fellowship is, you can visit the UC Berkeley Career Center’s website at
https://career.berkeley.edu/InfoLab/Fellow.

development to Fellows and monitor the implementation of minimum standards and requirements.
7. Do College Adviser Fellows receive health benefits?
College Adviser Fellows are eligible to receive health, dental, and vision insurance benefits through DCAC if they are not
already covered under a health insurance policy. College Adviser Fellows can enroll in health insurance through DCAC at
any time during the duration of the fellowship. College Adviser Fellows who continue for a second year of service with
DCAC will receive health insurance coverage over the summer.
