CHARNO AWARDS The Charno Award is presented annually to the top male and female citizens of the University of Central Missouri. The honor is named after George Charno, Sr., a Kansas City attorney who established the award in 1940 to recognize the two outstanding members of the senior class. Selection is based on a combination of criteria, which include: leadership, scholarship, character, involvement in campus organizations and extracurricular activities, service to the university, and involvement in one’s academic department. Announced during the Spring 2022 semester, this year’s recipients are Justin Cobb and Emma Cobb. This is the first time in history that the Charno honorees are husband and wife. EMMA COBB Seeking a career that will impact the lives of young people, Emma Cobb is graduating from UCM summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood and Elementary Education. She is a former resident of St. Thomas, Missouri. Emma’s outstanding record of leadership and involvement at UCM includes serving as president for two years for two different organizations simultaneously, Ladies Inspiring Versatility and Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society. She has served as treasurer for the student chapter of the Missouri State Teachers Association and as the education block representative for Early Childhood Young Professionals, in addition to membership in Gamma Phi Beta, Students for Political Action, and MO Volunteers. Her desire to help others also led to her selection as a participant for the Global Vision Scholarship Service Trip. Her UCM experience also has been enhanced through her involvement in activities that include intramural sports, participation in the Hearts Around Campus positivity campaign, Homecoming service activities, fundraising for the Campus Cupboard, assisting with the Warrensburg Main Street cleanup project, letter writing and pumpkin carving with the Warrensburg Veterans Home, and helping with the Pertle Springs Trail cleanup project. JUSTIN COBB A student from Taos, Missouri, Justin Cobb will graduate this spring with a long list of accomplishments that have helped make him an inspiration to other students. He is carrying a double major in Political Science and International Studies, and double minors in Military Science and Global Security, while achieving a cumulative 4.0 grade point average. During his tenure at UCM, Justin served on the Academic Review Board, was permanent representative for Model United Nations, and spent two years serving as the student coordinator for the American Democracy Project. His leadership positions include service as president for both the Student Government Association and Students for Political Action, in addition to serving as battalion commander for the Fighting Mules (ROTC) Battalion, and captain of the ROTC Ranger Challenge Team. Justin also served as a UCM Global Ambassador, member of the Muleskinner Publication Board, chair of the Homecoming Pep Rally Committee for three years, in addition to membership on the Unity Week Committee. The many activities in which Justin was involved at UCM include the Global Vision Scholarship Service trip, Veterans Day marches, Together We Stand rally, SGA University Issues Committee, Pertle Springs Trail cleanup, and coordinating the Mock Speakeasy and Living Library events for the American Democracy Project. 4 5
2022 BYLER DISTINGUISHED FACULTY AWARD Named after William H. Byler, an inventor, author and teacher who graduated from UCM in 1927, the Byler Distinguished Faculty Award is the highest recognition bestowed upon university faculty members. Byler established an endowment fund to provide annual recognition for distinguished faculty performance, evidenced by teaching, scholarly, or creative activity, and professional service. This year’s recipient is a member of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, Dr. Jack Rogers, professor of communication. Dr. Jack Rogers Dr. Jack Rogers has developed a reputation for being an outstanding teacher and mentor, while also having a passion for speech and debate that is internationally known. His colleagues describe him as someone who has demonstrated mastery at both the undergraduate and graduate teaching levels, having taught courses in general education and in a variety of human communication sub-disciplines. Dr. Rogers joined UCM in September 2000, and during the first decade of his service to the university he was the Director of Forensics, coaching and advising the Talking Mules speech and debate team until 2010. He resumed his work with the Talking Mules after chairing the former Department of Communication, 2010-2014, and has continued his involvement with the team since then. Colleagues in the School of Communication, History and Interdisciplinary Studies commended Dr. Rogers for his dedication to the field of speech and debate, noting that he truly cares about students and their success at UCM. His commitment to students, coupled with a competitive spirit as a speech and debate coach, regularly contributes to his teams winning state and regional awards, and they often place at the national level against students at the most prestigious universities in the country. A testament to his positive influence as an educator, Dr. Rogers’ students go on to excel in their professions, many of them at the highest level of their careers, having benefited from his passion for his work which greatly extends beyond the classroom. During his tenure, Dr. Rogers provided leadership in the creation of the Montgomery Cup competition that provides both undergraduate and graduate students opportunities to learn about British debate and history. He annually takes students to the United Kingdom and Ireland to participate in this event, which is often a life-changing experience. For more than two decades, his students who participate in the Montgomery Cup get to compete on a world stage against the best teams from institutions such as the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge, St. Andrews, and Trinity College-Dublin, and they have a long history of success. They have won the Montgomery Cup 17 out of 22 times. Along with these tours, Dr. Rogers has had opportunities to serve as a lecturer discussing the educational value of debate before students and faculty in places such as the UK. Additionally, he has worked to build scholarships to assist these and other speech and debate students, regardless of their financial situation. In addition to his successes abroad, Dr. Rogers’ strong record of forensics coaching at UCM has included 11 Missouri Intercollegiate Forensics Association State Champions in Overall Sweepstakes, 13 State Debate Champions, and 10 Individual Events State Champions. GOVERNOR’S AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION The Governor’s Award for Excellence in Education is an annual recognition initiative established by the Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education. In recognizing honorees, the awards program considers criteria such as effective teaching, effective advising, innovative course design and delivery, service to the university community, commitment to high standards of excellence and success in nurturing student achievement. This year’s award goes to a faculty member in the Harmon College of Business and Professional Studies, Dr. Scott Smith, professor of marketing. Dr. Scott Smith Dr. Scott Smith has served the university nearly two decades and is an alumnus having earned a Master of Business Administration in Marketing in 2004. He completed his degree shortly after joining the faculty in the Harmon College of Business and Professional Studies in January 2003. He also studied at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, where he earned a Ph.D., and attended Missouri State University, where he was awarded a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Dr. Smith supports his students inside and outside the classroom. In addition to being an advisor to the UCM student chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA), he works hard to provide hands-on experiences in his courses. Most of his classes provide service learning opportunities in which students complete a marketing project such as conducting market research, data collection and analysis for a local business. Through his Experiential Course Projects, students have engaged with more than 45 clients during his tenure at UCM. Colleagues describe Dr. Smith as a gifted educator who strives to help each student achieve his or her full potential. They say he has a remarkable ability to take complex concepts and communicate with them in a way that students can understand. He also commits countless hours mentoring students to produce a quality final product for the clients they serve through their class projects. Dr. Smith’s mentorship has included serving students in the McNair Scholars program and being an advisor on a number of Honors and master’s thesis projects. He gets involved with the annual national State Farm Marketing and Sales Competition, and plays an instrumental role in implementing the annual AMA Distinguished Marketing Executive Day. This event honors a high-level marketing professional who speaks and interacts with marketing students, and often includes UCM alumni and individuals who have worked with major corporations. Innovative in his approach to education, Dr. Smith was the driving force behind the development of an advertising minor that incorporates both marketing and PR courses, and he worked closely with the Management Program to develop an Events Marketing and Management major. He is currently developing a digital lab so that students will be on the cutting edge of the digital revolution, and has teamed up with a colleague to develop a study abroad trip to Europe and a study abroad cruise to the Mediterranean as a way to provide students with a worldly perspective and positively impact their education. The longtime UCM faculty member has a strong record of course creation at the undergraduate and graduate level, and has been involved in efforts that include redesigning the first year freshman experience, and serving as a panelist to share his expertise with groups such as the Center for Teaching and Learning, Admissions, and Career Services. 56
