Barry P. Sleckman, M.D., Ph.D. Director, O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center Dr. Barry Sleckman became Director of the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center in January 2020. Prior to moving to Birmingham, he served as associate director of the Meyer Cancer Center at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City. He also spent ten years as the associate director of the Siteman Cancer Center at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. His research focuses on understanding how DNA double strand breaks are generated and repaired — a topic important for cancer and immune system development and function. He received his M.D. and Ph.D. in immunology at Harvard Medical School. When Dr. Sleckman arrived at the O’Neal Cancer Center, he set out with five main goals – to make “O’Neal” the brand name for the very best cancer care in the state of Alabama, to increase new cancer patients coming to UAB for treatment (particularly from the 4-state region we serve), to increase annual participation in clinical trials, to reduce time to first available appointment across UAB Oncology, and to raise awareness in the community that where a person is treated first matters. This final goal is especially significant and impacts all others because all cancers, no matter how benign or severe, must be treated in settings that provide the very latest therapies and clinical trials available. The O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB has done this for the last fifty years and continues to be a lead innovator in the fight against cancer.
