Covid-19: The
role of NHs & other
CSOs in maintaining
social connection
Friday 20 March 2020
Presented by: Nicole Battle
CEO Neighbourhood Houses Victoria
Neighbourhood Houses Victoria acknowledges the Aboriginal custodians of this land and
we pay our respects to their culture, their people and elders past, present and future.
nhvic.org.au #nhvicIntroduction
• Community Service Organisations form a vital part of Victoria’s
service system – particularly during times of crisis.
• This includes 400 Neighbourhood Houses across Victoria and a
similar number of Men’s Sheds.
• NHs are evenly split between metropolitan Melbourne and
rural/regional Victoria.
• There are approximately 200,000 people who visit a
Neighbourhood House across Victoria every week.
• NHs engage more than 6,500 volunteers and 5,000 staff.
nhvic.org.au #nhvicNeighbourhood Houses - Overview
• Local communities rely on NHs for many different programs and services
including:
– Accredited & pre-accredited training
– Occasional childcare
– Exercise programs
– Support groups
– Recreational activities – e.g. craft groups
– Access to services – e.g. Centrelink, JSA
– Emergency Relief – e.g. Food parcels
– Computer access & support for digital literacy.
nhvic.org.au #nhvicCOVID-19: The role of Neighbourhood
Houses & other CSOs
• The introduction of ‘social distancing’ will obviously have a
significant impact on many current NH/CSO activities.
• NHs are, however, community development organisations
and therefore play a crucial role during times of crisis.
• Indeed many NHs are already beginning to think about how
they can keep communities connected over the coming
months.
nhvic.org.au #nhvicCOVID-19: The role of Neighbourhood
Houses & other CSOs
Connecting People Online
• Providing online platforms (e.g. Skype, Facebook groups) for
different user groups.
• Running virtual book clubs, craft clubs, exercise groups etc.
• Running talks or classes online via YouTube.
• Providing links to interesting and relevant content – e.g. Ted
Talks.
nhvic.org.au #nhvicCOVID-19: The role of Neighbourhood
Houses & other CSOs
Support for Individuals
• Continuation of food relief using an appointment system and/or
direct delivery.
• Community lunches – meals to be home delivered to those in need.
• Community delivery service (staffed by volunteers) to drop off
medication and other essentials as required.
• Dog walking for vulnerable residents who are not able to go outside.
nhvic.org.au #nhvicCOVID-19 & the role of
Neighbourhood Houses
Case Study One: Mount Eliza Neighbourhood House
• Called all participants to let them know that the centre
had closed.
• Postcards sent to all vulnerable community members,
letting them know to reach out for help if they need it.
• Creation of a phone tree with staff calling vulnerable
people a minimum of once per week.
• Development of an activity booklet for isolated
community members.
• Collation of care packs for vulnerable members of the
community, containing essential items.
• Regular updates via Mailchimp newsletters, Facebook,
Instagram and NH website.
nhvic.org.au #nhvicCOVID-19 & the role of
Neighbourhood Houses
Case Study Two: Phillip Island Community & Learning Centre
• Largest emergency food relief program in the region as well as being
a Centrelink Agency.
• PICAL has mobilised all local charities/churches and community
services to support its emergency food relief program and have
assembled large volunteer cooking teams to prepare 800+ frozen
meals each week.
• PICAL has set-up a Video-Conferencing Host Centre to start
podcasting Adult Learning (and other “survival”) lessons.
• Currently looking for government funding to re-skill workers who are
likely to be left unemployed as a result of the crisis.
nhvic.org.au #nhvicCOVID-19: The role of Neighbourhood
Houses & other CSOs
Facilitating Community Recovery
• At some stage, this situation will pass - although the cost to
both communities and individuals is likely to be enormous.
• When that happens, the role of NHs & CSOs will be vital in
terms of helping to facilitate community recovery, as well as
providing support to people who have been left vulnerable as
a result of the crisis.
