Dear Friends,
The following prayer is attributed to Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav:
INSIDE
Grant me the ability to be alone; may it be my custom to

all growing things and there may I be alone, and enter into

prayer, to talk with the One to whom I belong. May I express
Kaddish List, 3 there everything in my heart, and may all the foliage of the
field — all grasses, trees, and plants — awake at my coming,

to send the powers of their life into the words of my prayer so that my prayer
Passing Members, 7 and speech are made whole through the life and spirit of all growing things,
which are made as one by their transcendent Source. May I then pour out the
Virtual Worship, 8 words of my heart before your Presence like water, O God, and lift up my hands
to You in worship, on my behalf, and that of my children!
This prayer of solitude has spoken to me over the past several months. During this time
of isolation, Sue and I have spent a lot of time in our garden. We have been pruning,
weeding, planting, and looking forward to harvesting our small but earnest plot of
flowers, vegetables, and herbs. I must confess, I have never been an avid gardener – it
always seemed like a lot of work. And yet, recently, the daily tasks of maintenance and
stewardship have taken on an entirely new spiritual meaning as we track the progress of
our garden. I find myself looking forward to watching everything grow and blossom in
anticipation of the harvest that we will hopefully gather. Had you asked me six months
ago if I thought I would be enjoying gardening, I would have laughed at the thought.
But COVID-19 changes everything.
This has been a time for reassessment and finding out what is truly important
in our lives. There is nothing like a crisis to put everything into perspective.
Yesterday’s necessities have become today’s extravagances. As our world
becomes smaller, our values and priorities come sharply into focus.
In times like these, we look to familiar rituals; small pleasures
and opportunities to give thanks for the blessings in our
lives – even as we cope with the unknown.

taking advantage of the beauty of
nature and spending time with the
people who are most important to
