           THE GREAT HOW TO SHOW
               RESPECT DEBATE
As I write it is the day following the death of Prince Phillip. His
passing, as with that of Vera Lynn, marks a lost link with the past and
reminds those of us in the third period of our life of our own
mortality.

I am a great admirer of the Duke of Edinburgh. He was a no
nonsense sort of chap and we both shared the brotherhood of
military service. Although those on the land are always in some sort
of remote, unspoken competition with those on the water or in the
air.

It was understandable and planned in advance that tributes would
flow for the Queen’s Consort of 73 years. However too much
eulogising, constantly repeated sometimes within the same
programme and some of it frankly banal, risks tarnishing rather than
“complimenting” one’s lifetime achievements. I believe all the TV
channels and the newspapers were guilty of this.

The BBC’s royal correspondent, Nicholas Witchell, over deferential
delivery of such lines as “the family are rushing to the Queen’s
side”, 24 hours after her husband’s death - an interlude of twenty-
four hours can hardly be termed rushing - and such pointless gems
as “It is reported that the Queen is distraught.” - well, of course
she is, it must be like losing part of yourself after sharing so many
years together and “We believe the funeral arrangements will be
announced sometime in the future.” only serve to bore those who
are republicans at heart and add nothing to those with genuine
royalist leanings.

One has to ask was the annulment of both BBC One and Two’s
entire Friday evening schedule, in order to show the same
programmes pertaining to Prince Phillip on both channels, really
necessary? Was it insensitive to those holding legitimate views
regarding the questioning of the need for a royal family at all, and
the validity of a constitutional monarchy.

I believe the media in general got the balance wrong, in terms of
hours of coverage although there was some excellent insights given
regarding his early life, on both TV and in print. However there was
simply too much, an overload. I joked before the weekend that if
things carried on the way they were going that the weekend’s
“Match Of The Day” would dedicate its entire programme to “The
Duke’s Best Five-a-Side Kickabout” Of course it didn’t but there
was nevertheless an over lengthy reflection at the start of the
programme.

I also feel that as well as too much “air-time” being devoted to his
passing and life that, as with the death of all prominent people, a
biased view of his character and achievements were offered. There
was no mention of his London indiscretions in the 40s and 50s, of
his sometimes inappropriate, insensitive comments or if indeed
they were alluded to it was in a way to mark his charm and
forthright manner rather than an embarrassing faux pas. The British
public is adult. Give us the good with the bad. We can handle it
and make up our own minds.

I’ve made up mine. I liked the chap enormously. He did his job well
for an inordinate number of years. He cared for our country and our
world. I think his lasting testimony rather than being linked to his
royal duties and the royal family or indeed his wartime naval record
should rest with his work with The World WildLife Fund and The
Duke Of Edinburgh Award Scheme. For those two achievements
alone I salute you sir…

Yours hopefully not being too deferential,

                                  Brigadier Sir Arthur Thurlow-Lee

conditions for irresponsible pet ownership. We have had more time
at home, become bored and looked for a distraction and that has
come in the form of a puppy.

Kennel Club research statistics show that:
• 10% of new puppy owners had never considered owning a dog
  previously.
• 20% of new owners who bought a puppy during the pandemic
admit they hadn’t fully considered the long-term commitment or
responsibility that comes with having a dog.
• 18% are not sure how they will look after their dog when they
return to work, with 52% saying they had taken this into
  consideration before getting their puppy.
• 22% are concerned about their puppy’s socialisation and
behaviour due to lockdown restrictions, including when meeting
other people and dogs. Less than half (45%) researched puppy
  training before getting their dog.
• 15% are now worried about whether they can afford their dog
and associated costs – such as insurance, food and vet bills and
34% said they didn’t have pet insurance.
• 15% agree, in hindsight, they weren’t ready to get a puppy.

These statistics make for worrying reading – our concern, as a
profession, is that of the welfare of the numerous dogs that may
land up being rehomed because of inappropriate buying and
potentially poor socialisation.
Many of these pandemic puppies are now suffering behavioural
issues due to a lack of opportunities for them to be socialised
appropriately. These behavioural problems are unfortunately often
compounded by owners who may never have owned a dog before
and lack the knowledge to correct any issues that may need to be
addressed.
As restrictions ease, we may see some dogs being more fearful of
novel stimuli, compromising their well-being and potentially leading
to problem behaviours. Many owners could be contending with
reactivity, anxiety or separation problems, often resulting from the
multitude of changes happening in their dogs’ lives.
