Objectives • Learn how to use simulation-based content in a post-COVID world • Get best practices to integrating simulation into lesson content to engage students • Discover what simulation can and should look like in a high school CTE program www.realityworks.com 2
How COVID Changed Education • 1 billion children out of the classroom worldwide • E-learning is the key www.realityworks.com 3
Preparing the Future • CTE – Higher graduation rates – Better understanding of academics – Dual credit www.realityworks.com Product Family Product Name 4
Plan • Consistent • What is needed for success • Goals and objectives This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY www.realityworks.com 7
The Mismatch Mistake • Objective: Explain the purpose of the equipment used to take blood pressure • How met: Students will demonstrate how to take a blood pressure www.realityworks.com 8
Prepare • Pre-simulation prep • Readings, presentations, or lectures • Self-assessment or reflection to identify gaps in knowledge • Guidelines and expectations This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA www.realityworks.com 10
Example Guidelines When you come to simulation, please be: • Organized and prepared for the simulation. • Accountable for one's role and responsibilities. • Collaborative, supportive, nonintimidating, and mutually respectful. • Able to share expertise and/or experiences in a safe, nonjudgmental manner. • Calm, compassionate, and creating a sense of trust. • Honest, mindful, and sensitive to cultural differences and ethical issues related to the simulation-based experience. • Aware of a safe learning environment www.realityworks.com 11
Simulate • Preparation – Understand the simulation – Trial the simulation – Anticipate ways the simulation can go wrong • Participation – No passive learning www.realityworks.com 12
What can be simulated? www.realityworks.com 13
Face-to-Face • Masks, gloves • Social distancing • What do the students really need hands-on? www.realityworks.com 14
Online • Webcams • Use what the students have • Use live meetings www.realityworks.com 15
Reflect • Beginning: Reactions phase • Middle: Analysis phase • Ending: Summary phase www.realityworks.com 16
Emotions • Remember to keep the environment safe • Nothing is personal • Manage the upset student www.realityworks.com 17
Plus-Delta System • What went well??? • What would you have changed??? www.realityworks.com 18
You first.. • Get comfortable with online technologies • Think outside the box • Use teamwork and share resources www.realityworks.com 19
Explore creative options • Sim packages – Check out tablets and sim gear • Use what you have! www.realityworks.com 20
Use Role Play • Be a mock patient • Role play soft skills www.realityworks.com Product Family Product Name 21
Let’s Practice www.realityworks.com 22
You are all the co-workers that think this is a good idea. www.realityworks.com 23
Now you are all the co-workers that are against the prank. www.realityworks.com 24
The prank happens and her phone is gone. She reports it to her manager. Now you are the manager that finds out about the prank. www.realityworks.com 25
