Linguistics, Language and
Puzzles
Fabulous news! Our Year 12 OzCLO team has
progressed from the regional NT round, to the national
round of the contest!
The competitions consists of puzzles, which suit students
with demonstrated skills in computer science and
linguistics, presents students with fragments of vocabulary
or grammar from various modern, ancient, invented,
endangered, fictional or unique languages, and then
asks them to identify patterns and answer questions that
require students to make predictions about the vocabulary
or grammar of that language.
Nyanta Parashar, Faith Stevens, Peter Susanto and
William Thomas have been training every week on Friday
afternoons for an hour to understand the format of the
puzzles better and the best strategies for solving them.
Congratulations must also go to Year 10 students Sahasra

who also competed in the competition.
Nya, Faith, Peter and William will go to Charles Darwin
University on Wednesday, 24 March to compete at the

During Week 7 of Term 1 Haileybury Rendall School
competed in both the Junior and Middle School
PARRS Touch Football Gala Days. Touch Football has
become increasingly popular in Darwin as is proved
by the large number of teams and schools involved
in each day. The events were played at the Marrara
Rugby League Stadium where the grounds inspired
some fantastic dives and great tries. Although
we did not come away from the day in first place,
our students learnt a great deal, expanded their
friendship circles and had fun.
The students were involved in all aspects of the day
including playing, umpiring and scoring, and conducted
themselves in a way that people have come to expect
from Haileybury Rendall School students.

Writing Melodies and
Songs with Ostinato
Accompaniment
In Music Class the Transition Gold
students learnt how notes are
written on the music staff and how
to identify line and space notes.
Year 1 Magenta practiced
melodic dictation by hearing
and notating four beat
melodies using so and mi.
Children enjoyed singing or
chanting action songs like “Engine
Number 9” and “Tony Chestnut”. Using
the musical game “Icka Backa Soda
Cracker” each student had a turn
to play percussion instruments and
accompany the singing. On the drums
and maracas, students played a 4 beat
rhythm, using ta, titi and za. On the
chime bars and xylophones, students
improvised a 4 beat melody using so
and mi. Half the class sang the lyrics
while the other half sang a melodic
ostinato, using words from the song
like “soda cracker”. This is a wonderful
way for students to demonstrate their
understanding of melody, harmony
and rhythm.

VCAL visit to Bunnings
On Thursday, 11 March the Clontarf VCAL students went out to Bunnings in Palmerston for a tour of the store
and to hear about potential opportunities for part-time work. The boys got to see behind the scenes and heard how
the store operates and the different employment opportunities offered. Trish Visser, the Community and Activities co-
ordinator hosted the boys and answered their questions about what working at Bunnings would be like. The Year 10/11
boys learned a lot from the visit and I hope that we will see some of the guys donning the red shirts and working
on weekends soon.
