You would describe yourself as a best in class healthcare communication and content
professional who is passionate about team leadership and using content to increase donor
engagement and funding. You understand and appreciate how specialized Major Gift marketing
and communication has become given the increasing demand for the audiences.

You have a strong service orientation and know how to project manage and prioritize for you and
your team to deliver timely and exceptional donor correspondence (stewardship/outcome
reports, web stories, donor proposals, announcements etc.). You are a strong relationship
builder, and your trustworthy style results in followership. In this role you and your team will
partner with doctors, clinicians, researchers, volunteers, board members and major gift
fundraisers, whose time is limited, and all have strong voices. You are always prepared,
respectful, collaborative, strategic, creative and deliver on your promises.

You have successfully led communication teams in your career and are known for excellent
writing and editing skills. Multiple rounds of edits with tight deadlines and high stakes do not
phase you. Former Direct Reports would say you were the ‘best boss they had ever had’. You care
about your people and help them achieve their own career goals while always cognizant of the
business demands. Your strong communication and creative skills rooted in marketing have
resulted in significant added value and financial contributions to the organizations you have
worked for.

You understand the intricacies and bespoke nature of Major Giving philanthropy and ideally have
worked in a hospital or health-oriented environment. If not, you have worked on the agency side
and have supported health related philanthropic organizations with their major giving
campaigns. You thrive in a highly matrixed stakeholder environment and are exceptional at
managing a myriad of personalities while project managing to exceed expectations and

Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation is a high-performance and high-growth
Foundation with ~ 100 employees raising more than $150 million a year by a sophisticated, best
in class, effective and well-respected group of fundraising and advancement services
professionals. The Foundation is in year two of a strategic plan (2019-2024) which will continue
to build on their mission of raising much-needed funds by developing and sustaining strong
relationships.

The Position
The Director, Major Gifts Content position is a newly created role within TGWHF given the
demand to support the increasing number of donor relationships and more sophisticated
marketing needs for major gifts fundraising. The successful candidate will report to the Vice
President Marketing, Communications & Community Giving and they will inherit a team of 8.
TGWHF is highly focused on major gift philanthropy, raising more than $150 million per year in
support of various campaigns. Our successful candidate will lead the marketing and
communications strategy and associated content as it relates to Major Gift fundraising. They will
work closely with their team (the Foundation’s Communications Specialists) to ensure all major
gift donor facing materials are reflective of the TGWHF brand while maintaining a unique touch
for each donor and their expressed campaign of interest.

Our candidate will be a collaborator and excellent communicator. Their peer, the Director of
Marketing & Communications, will be a key partner in ensuring the Major Giving communications
efforts are reflective of the TGWHF brand promise. They will work cross functionally with their
peers in Philanthropy and in the Hospitals and will be comfortable partnering with stakeholders
at varying levels of seniority, from Hospital employees through to TGWHF board members and
senior volunteers.

Ideally our candidate will be familiar with Major Gifts and will have worked within a hospital
foundation or healthcare environment. However, we are also open to candidates who have
worked for an agency supporting a major fundraising campaign or major gift strategy.

Our successful candidate will be an exceptional editor and able to take complex medical concepts
and translate for a layman audience. They will be a strong people leader and have managed a
team and are respected by direct reports for their candor, support, and mentorship. They are a
team player, who believes ‘a rising tide lifts all boats’. They will bring a marketing orientation and
be a brand champion for the incredible work being done at TGWHF and a proud ambassador of
the Foundation within the Philanthropy community both in Toronto and nationally. An
independent self-starter, our successful candidate will thrive working for a leader who has high
expectations and encourages a creative and collaborative work culture and who is not a micro
manager, instead choosing to provide the team with space, freedom and support to do their best
work.

Primary Accountabilities
Major Gifts Marketing & Communications

   •   Collaborate with campaign managers as a marketing and content expert and key partner,
       to create, implement and measure success of campaign marketing and communications
       plans focused on major gift donors and prospects, all while ensuring alignment and
       integration with organizational brand strategy
   •   Work with Marketing & Communications colleagues and external suppliers, as
       appropriate, to deliver marketing and communication products in a timely manner to
       support the fundraisers’ needs
   •   When necessary, develop campaign positioning, key messages, and narrative in
       collaboration with Communication Specialists
   •   Engage directly in writing, creating and/or directing the writing of high value cases for
       support, donor proposals, stewardship/outcomes reports, web, and social content

•   In conjunction with content teams, bring forward innovative marketing strategies and
      ideas to enhance major donor relationships and experiences through new technologies,
      digital communications, and other tactics
  •   On an ongoing basis, ensure the team is actively seeking and generating new content to
      support organizational communications and content strategy
  •   Oversee and ensure consistency of the quality, tone, voice, design, and style of
      communications products prepared by the team; must align with Foundation brand and
      writing standards
  •   Working with the team members, ensure the most effective methods are in place to
      track/manage projects, monitor workflow and report on the team’s activities and efforts
  •   Develop and manage annual budgets to support major gift marketing activities; in
      collaboration with Director, Marketing & Communications develop an overarching
      marketing & communications budget; ensure projects and initiatives are delivered on
      time and on budget
  •   Responsible for sourcing and managing relationships with external suppliers and vendors
  •   Work with UHN representatives to enhance major gift marketing and communication
      efforts; engage with campaign volunteers as appropriate to ensure campaign success
  •   Conduct occasional environmental scans to identify gaps/areas for improvement as well
      as opportunities and best practices

Brand Management

  •   Steward and champion TGWHF brand guidelines to ensure quality and consistency across
      all content
  •   Ensure TGWHF positioning is accurately reflected in communications pieces
  •   Work closely with UHN Corporate Communications team to create consistency between
      Hospital and Foundation wherever possible and appropriately for major gift campaigns
  •   Quality assurance and proofreading for special projects as required
  •   Direct collaboration with: Director, Marketing & Communications

Staff Management

   •   Our successful candidate will have an excellent track record in leading high-performance
       teams. In this role they will inherit a team of 8 direct reports

The Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will ideally possess the following:
   •   Minimum of 8 years in senior marketing and communications roles in a healthcare or
       hospital environment
   •   Strong understanding of major gift fundraising

   •   Seasoned people leader with a track record of excellence in inspiring and
       leading a best in class team

   •   Superior written and editing skills, alongside exceptional oral communication
       skills

   •   Strategic thinker with ability to break down complex ideas and tell them in
       compelling, meaningful ways

   •   Experience managing and working directly with suppliers and marketing
       agencies

   •   Understands the demands and nuances of partnering with volunteers and
       senior leaders

   •   Self-starter with strong organizational and administrative skills

   •   Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment while managing
       the team with multiple projects and priorities

   •   Meticulous with a commitment to superior quality; thorough knowledge of
       Canadian Press (CP) and Globe & Mail styles

   •   Excellent skills in applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
       Adobe InDesign experience preferred

   •   Degree in communications, marketing, journalism or similar
