Take a deep breath celebrates the onset of spring, we and close your eyes, listen to the sounds begin to venture outside, into the parks around you, smell the fresh air, feel and onto the trails more and more for the sun on your face and the wind on outdoor activities. The National Trail Parks and Recreation District is an extensive parks and recreation system encompassing a multitude of facilities and program opportunities for Clark County residents. This Joint Recreation District was formed when the City of Springfield Parks and Recreation Department and the Clark County Recreation Department joined as one agency. The District manages over 1,100 acres of beautiful parks and facilities and nearly 20 miles of multi-use trails. Bluebird Conservation Efforts in Parks By Penny Dunbar In the spring of 2021, naturalist volunteers began National Trail Parks & Recreation District monitoring the nest boxes soon after installation. FOR EVERYONE STEVE HAWKINS For over 21 years Steve Hawkins made a positive impact in the parks, trails and greenspaces throughout Clark County. He began his career as a Turf Maintenance Worker in 2000 and was promoted to the position of Horticulturist in 2004. Early in 2021, Steve announced that he would retire from the National Trail Parks and Recreation District at the beginning of 2022. His expertise and experience in landscape design is visible throughout our community in the parks, on our bridges and in the downtown esplanade. Most recently, Steve was instrumental in the design and development of the Kirby Preserve at Old Reid Park. Guiding his team of employees, they worked tirelessly to redevelop this former farm into a hidden gem for our residents and future generations to enjoy.
