EXTREMADURA, A PARADISE FOR BIRDS AND NATURE LOVERS

Extremadura is considered to be one of the best places in Europe to watch birds in natural settings
and even in built-up areas. This is the case not only in spring but throughout the year, in contrast to
 other destinations.

There are many reasons for this: firstly 74.1% of the territory of Extremadura is included in the inven-
tory of Important Bird Areas, which is an exceptional situation both in Spain and in Europe. The
impressive figure of 369 species has been recorded among sedentary birds and summer and winter
visitors. There are over 50 protected areas including Monfragüe, the Tajo Internacional, and the Sierra
de San Pedro, which are important sanctuaries for some of the most threatened species on the conti-
nent such as the Spanish imperial eagle, the black stork, the Egyptian vulture, and the black vulture.
Furthermore, there are over 70 Special Bird Protection Areas (Zonas de Especial Protección para las
Aves, ZEPAs), of which 23 are located in built-up areas such as Cáceres, Trujillo, Plasencia, the
Badajoz Dam, Almendralejo, Zafra, and Jerez de los Caballeros.

With these natural resources Extremadura has specialised in welcoming and providing services for
the type of Spanish and international tourist interested in birds, insects, and flowers, without forgetting
aspects such as culture, the historical heritage, and gastronomy.

Over 80 accommodation establishments, professional guides, companies providing different tourist
activities, interpretation centres, and tourist offices from all of the region have come together in the
Extremadura Birding Club, a pioneering initiative in Spain and an example of public-private collabora-
tion which works to promote ornithological tourism and offer the client a quality service.

If you like nature, Extremadura will be a paradise for you.
