WELCOME Welcome to the Hylands Estate Events brochure for April to September 2022! With so many public events happening on our Estate this year, we wanted to gather them together in one place so you could see all the opportunities available to visit our amazing grounds, gardens, and buildings. VINTAGE AFTERNOON TEA Our Vintage Afternoon Tea can be enjoyed on the same days as our Open Estate Days and take place in the Terrace Room at Hylands House. Pre-booking is essential via our website. You can also browse Hylands House 19 at your own leisure with the last entry at 3pm, or JUN enjoy a free guided tour at 10.30am led by our knowledgeable team. 17 The Farmers’ & Craft Market is located outside JUL Hylands House or in the Grand Pavilion if the weather is unpleasant. The market is a treasure 21 AUG trove of fresh, local food, drink, and crafts direct from the producers and makers. Local honey, 18 fresh bread, smoked fish and cheese, handmade SEP candles, and beautifully crafted jewellery are just some of the delights you’ll find. The Stables, home to a vibrant community of artists, designers, and makers, will be open for exploring. Discover unique handmade pieces available to purchase, or get creative yourself and book one of our experiences or workshops. Grab a coffee and lunch in The Stables Café while you’re there and enjoy the live music in the courtyard. Hawthorn Heavy Horses provide estate carriage tours throughout the day. MAY 01 ALL ABOUT DOGS SHOW MAY 9.30am – 5pm HP 02 MAY The All About Dogs Show is the UK’s FAVOURITE dog event for dogs of all shapes and sizes – and it’s returning even bigger and better in 2022! Bring your dog for two days full of exciting arena displays, expert advice, shopping and lots of fun have-a-go activities including the popular Fun Dog Shows where you and your dog can win rosettes, plus enjoy K9 Aqua Sports, talent competitions, live music and more… Advance tickets are available online at allaboutdogsshow.co.uk 20 THE NATIONAL FLOWER SHOW MAY 10am – 5pm HP 21 MAY The National Flower Show celebrates the very best of gardening, home and lifestyle and will be 22 returning to Hylands Estate from Friday 20th to MAY Sunday 22nd May 2022. Across the three days, the event will be filled with inspiration, flowers, plants and everything you need for your home and garden. JUN E 02 CREAMFIELDS SOUTH JUN Creamfields, one of the world’s biggest HP 03 electronic music promoters, are launching JUN an all-new 50,000 capacity two-day camping festival in June 2022, which will see them bring 04 their award-winning festival South to Hylands JUN Park. With the iconic Hylands House as its backdrop, the multi-stage festival will also give fans the chance to experience the colossal 15,000 capacity Steel Yard superstructure. The festival is scheduled coincide with the 25-year celebrations of its award winning sister festival Creamfields Daresbury. AU G US T 15 IMMERSION THEATRE AUG PRESENTS RAPUNZEL BL 1pm & 4pm Let your hair down and get tangled in a brand- new musical adaptation of the classic fairy tale, Rapunzel! Immersion Theatre proudly presents a witty, pantomimic, tongue-in-cheek retelling of the family favourite complete with a laugh out loud script, a host of catchy songs, heaps of audience interaction, and an exciting array of larger-than- life characters. Visit hylandsestate.co.uk/events 23 THE LORD CHAMBERLAIN’S MEN AUG PRESENT AS YOU LIKE IT BL The Lord Chamberlain’s Men – with a history stretching back to William Shakespeare himself – invite you to join them this summer for the sparkling comedy, As You Like It. One of the UK’s finest touring theatre companies present this great play as Shakespeare first saw it performed – in the open air, by an all-male cast and with Elizabethan costumes, music and dance. This rustic romp packed with music, laughs, cross- dressing confusion and a dash of wrestling will keep you smiling to the last. SE PT E M B ER 17 THE NATIONAL COUNTRY SHOW SEP 10am – 5pm HP 18 SEP The ultimate family day out makes a grand return to Chelmsford this September. Enjoy live music and entertainment in the Village Green, watch stunning displays in the Main Arena, meet the animals and have-a-go at activities. Bring the whole family along and let the kids loose in the Kids Fun Zone, take part in the Fun Dog Shows, have a look around our Country Shopping Village and enjoy some amazing Food in our Festival of Food & Drink LIVE. TH E S TA BL E S 20 THE STABLES SUMMER SERIES MAY From £13.50 ST 21 Doors 6pm, music from 7pm to 11pm MAY 19 Join us for a brand-new event for 2022 - The JUN Stables Summer Series. On selected evenings throughout the summer, Hylands Estate have 17 joined up with Hot Box Live to programme some JUL of the best upcoming music acts on the circuit, who will perform in the atmospheric Stables 21 courtyard. AUG Some of our resident Hylands Artists will open 18 their studios before the music starts, and there’s SEP time to explore our brand-new shop. Hot Box will be running the bar with a different range of spirits, and the Stables Café will have a selection of festival food. Pull up a chair, arm yourself with a refreshing summertime beverage, and enjoy that festival feeling right here at the Stables in Hylands Estate. Tickets for each evening are now on sale via our website where you can check out the full line-up! Artists include Beans on Toast, performing on Saturday 21st May
THE STABLES Originally built to house Hylands Estate horses, The Stables has been restored as a vibrant space at the heart of the Estate. It is the perfect place to enjoy with friends and family. THE STABLES CAFÉ Enjoy a relaxed breakfast or lunch or to treat yourself to a cream tea and the friendly café team are always on hand to help you make the most of your visit. Opening times Courtyard Entrance: 10am - 4pm Dog Friendly Kiosk: 9am – 4pm INFORMATION POINT The Information Point is the hub of Hylands Artist Studios. This is where you can find out information about the artists and designers and pick up the Hylands Walks and Events leaflets. Don’t forget to purchase your duck food before heading to the Pleasure Gardens. Opening times 10am – 4pm Contact number 01245 605523 BOOK SHOP The second-hand bookshop is managed entirely by volunteers of the Friends of Hylands House. It carries a good stock of second-hand books covering many subjects and includes a large selection of collector’s books. The Hylands Estate Artist Studios located in The Stables is home to a diverse and vibrant community of creatives. Visit the studios for some inspiration and insight into their various creative processes. See both works in progress and exhibitions of finished works of art. Discover unique handmade pieces available to purchase or get creative yourself through our range of workshops and experiences. Grab a coffee and lunch in The Stables Café whilst you’re there. Our public facing studios are open Wednesday to Friday, 10am – 3pm. All studios, including upstairs, are open on our Open Estate Sundays where you can also enjoy the live music in the courtyard! RELEASE YOUR INNER CREATIVITY Our resident artists, designers and makers offer a selection of workshops that are bookable in advance. From learning painting techniques to warm glass workshops, get hands on with new skills and make something to take home. EXHIBITIONS With spaces now available in the Stables Café, the Snug, and the Friends second-hand bookshop, we are programming a range of exhibitions by our resident artists. Eye-catching photography, one of a kind paintings, and clever textiles designs are just a small selection of what you can enjoy as you make your way round the Stables.
HY L A N D S PA R K Hylands Estate is proud to have approximately 574 acres of restored historic parkland open to the public free of charge, including ancient woodlands, grassland, ponds, lakes, and formal gardens. WALKS Explore Hylands Estate on foot following our five mapped walks, ranging from a 30-minute stroll to a four-mile leisurely hike. Walk leaflets are available in the Information Point at The Stables or can be downloaded from our website. THE PLEASURE GARDENS The ornate Victorian Pleasure Gardens can be found near The Stables. With several period garden styles to explore and the on-going planting restoration, there’s always something new to see. ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND Hylands Estate is home to an award-winning accessible castle-themed adventure playground. The playground boasts four metre high castle battlements with portcullis and a cool drawbridge entrance with dedicated play areas for children above and below the age of six. Adjacent to the Adventure Playground is a Changing Places facility for key holders. MAURO’S Mauro’s Castle Kiosk is an outdoor café located near the Adventure Castle and offers a delicious selection of snacks, sandwiches, and cakes with hot and cold drinks.

The Hylands Park entrance, CM2 8FS, is closest to the Adventure Playground and to visit the park. The Hylands House entrance, CM2 8WQ, is closest to Hylands House and The Stables. By car Exit the M25 at Junction 28 on to the A12 towards Chelmsford and Colchester. Exit the A12 at Junction 15 on the A414 dual carriageway towards Chelmsford. By public transport Chelmsford Railway Station is in the city centre and a short taxi ride away from Hylands Estate. The number 351 First bus stops near the house entrance, but use with care as you cross the busy dual carriageway. By bike Designated cycle routes from the city centre can be found on our website.
