DESCRIPTION…
Title and Description Canadian Food Labelling 2021 Online Training

Canadian Food Labelling – An online workshop on Canadian food labelling under the authority
of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, (CFIA).

This online training program is modeled closely on the successful in class training that has
been offered for the past 15 years. The live online version is presented in two parts. The first
part focuses on knowledge exchange, where attendees will be introduced and stepped
through food labelling requirements. There are 2 separate knowledge exchange sessions
needed cover the content. Attendees may ask questions at the live session. The second part is
a live online practicum where, as a group we will review the assignments introduced to
attendees during the knowledge exchange part, to complete on their own. The practicum
focuses on the knowledge skills on managing food labelling requirements.

                        Summary…
Designed to provide an overview of Canadian food labelling considerations, this program
covers food labelling under federal jurisdiction for wide range foods from manufactured foods
like snacks, bakery products, processed fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry and fish products.
It covers basic labelling considerations, (common name, net contents, ingredient list, nutrition
facts and dealer name address), as well as additional labelling considerations that may apply,
(storage information, durable life dates, artificial sweeteners statements, vignettes, artificial
flavours, country of origin, etc.). Labelling requirements under the Food and Drug Regulations
and Safe Food for Canadian Regulations will be discussed. At the end of the program, you will
                        be able to:
                             • Develop a food label under federal legislation.
                             • Identify foods requiring a label and what exemptions may be applicable.
                             • Understand packaging and labelling definitions and how they relate to the
presentation of information, type heights, etc.
                             • Better appreciate how layout options can address your design objectives.
                             • Differentiate between retail (consumer) and non-retail (foodservice/further
                                  manufacture) labelling considerations.
                             • Understand common names, standard names and descriptive names.
                             • Appreciate the basic mandatory label elements such as common name, net content,
ingredient list, allergen, gluten source and sulphites, nutrition labelling and domicile
                                  statements.
                             • Describe how country of origin labelling may be applicable to your food.
                             • Look at new regulations governing ingredient, allergen, precautionary allergen and
nutrition labelling. New features like colour, sugars-based ingredient labelling and
serving size rules need a bit of explaining.
                             • Let’s take a peek at other labelling modernization being considered or proposed. Like
front of packaging nutrition labelling, highlighted ingredients and flavours, common
name, country of origin, domicile statements, etc.
