PAGE 5 Nebraska PGA News February 2021By Bob Denney—PGA Historian Emeritus
PGA Hall of Famer Bob Popp Sr., whose combined national and local leadership in
promoting professional education elevated the Nebraska PGA Section, passed away
Jan. 31, in Port St. Lucie, Florida, following complications of congestive heart failure.
He was 91.
Prior to his death, Popp was the fourth longest serving PGA Member at 71 years.
Born Feb. 9, 1929, in Belleville, Illinois, Popp grew up into a golf family, and took his
first job at his father Ted’s nine-hole Oak Hill Golf Course, which featured sand
greens.
“Dad said they used to save old motor oil and mix it with sand on the greens,” said Bob Popp Jr., the oldest of Popp’s
two sons. “That combination made for a slick putting surface.”
Popp competed on the PGA Tour for four seasons, primarily during the “West Coast Swing,” and recorded 17 lifetime
holes-in-one. He captured the 1961 and ’65 Nebraska PGA Section Championship, and competed in four PGA Champi-
onships and three Senior PGA Championships (today's KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship).
Popp held PGA Professional positions in Maysville, Kentucky and Lancaster, Ohio, before arriving at Omaha Country
Club on Jan. 1, 1959, where he spent 31 years before retiring in 1990. Popp served as president of the Nebraska PGA
Section (1973-75), but declined to run for national office due to it necessitating too much time away from his duties at
Omaha Country Club (OCC).
Elected to PGA Membership in 1949, Popp served a rare three terms in three separate decades on the PGA Board of
Directors -- 1969-70; 1976-78 and 1985-87. During those years, Popp was a member of the 1967 Ryder Cup Com-
mittee; chair of the PGA Education Department; the “Second Tour” Committee (today’s Korn Ferry Tour); and the Sen-
ior Tour Committee (today’s PGA TOUR Champions).
Popp also served on the PGA Junior Golf Committee and was named the 1982 national PGA Golf Professional of the
Year, the PGA’s highest annual honor.
One of the most decorated Nebraska PGA members, Popp was the Section’s 1965 Teacher of the Year; the 1978 and
‘82 Section Professional of the Year; 1981 PGA Professional Development Award recipient; and won the 1991 Section
Herb Davis Award for promotion of golf in Nebraska.
Popp was inducted into the Nebraska Golf Hall of Fame in 1992, and became a PGA Hall of Fame member in 2005.
“The PGA of America is saddened by the passing of Bob Popp, one of the longest serving PGA members and a legend
of the Nebraska PGA Section. Bob’s more than 70 years representing the PGA exemplified how PGA Professionals ful-
fill many roles. We send our thoughts and prayers to his wife, Betty, and family”, said Jim Richerson, President of the
PGA of America.
Retiring to PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, Florida, Popp was a regular competitor in the PGA Winter Championships. He
won the Half-Century Championship in 2003, reserved for PGA Members with 50 or more years of service.
Popp is survived by his wife, Betty, of 72 years; and sons Bob Jr. and Tony.

PAGE 16 Nebraska PGA News February 2021Hello Nebraska Section PGA friends,
Spring is around the corner and I’m sure you all are ready to
get going after a cold/snowy February. It has been so reward-
ing to be a part of all three sections business planning sessions over the Winter season and
so impressed by the leadership. The Executive Directors and officers are working hard run-
ning the business of their respective sections and creating programming to help all the pro-
fessionals of District 8. The next 60 days I am looking forward to traveling to all three sec-
tion meetings to learn more about the challenges for 2021 and new programming. What
will the start of 2021 look like compared to 2020? It is hard to say but my feeling is that golf
will continue to be strong so it will be important to lean on each and share best practices.
The 2021 Spring schedule for District 8 and National meetings:
March 23rd – March 26th – National Board Meeting in Frisco, Texas – National Committee Chairs
March 29th – Nebraska PGA Spring Meeting
April 12th – Iowa PGA Spring Meeting
May 3rd – Minnesota Spring Meeting
News and Notes from National:
-Rolex became an official partner of the PGA and its three major championships (PGA, Senior PGA and Women’s PGA) plus The Ry-
der Cup and the annual PGA Professional Championship. This is great news for our association financially and being aligned with a
long-time supporter of golf.
-The Masters will have limited attendance again this year to patrons so PGA Professionals will not be allowed to attend in April. We
appreciate the perk that comes with being able to use your PGA Professional member card to attend but also know this is a privi-
lege and not a right. Please respect their decision and look forward to getting back to normal in 2022.
-Distance measuring devices are going to be allowed at the PGA, Senior PGA and Women’s PGA starting in 2021. This policy was
approved 18 months ago by the Board but was not implemented in 2020 due to COVID 19. We are hoping this may improve the
flow of play during the Championships.
-Are you trying to learn how to navigate through the stimulus packages for your club or facility? If you have questions about PPP,
ERC or 501 C7 clubs please reach out to me and I can help direct you to the right person. Making sure your facility is aware of what
is available could enhance your standing as a PGA Professional.
-With a new administration in Washington, there has been new policies coming out that could influence the golf business. Whether
it be the minimum wage or daylight savings time I want to assure you that National HQ is watching and using their lobbyist to moni-
tor what is going on. We are currently part of the industry group called WE ARE GOLF (PGA, PGA Tour, GCSAA, CMAA, etc.) who
have lobbyists that work on our behalf. We also have our own lobbyist who works directly for the PGA of America. Please know that
your association is representing you and will update as the process continues to work through Congress.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to represent you in District 8 and looking forward to the section meeting towards the end
of March. Stay safe and best of luck as our courses open and we welcome back our customers, players, and friends to golf!
Sincerely,
Greg Neujahr, PGA
District 8 Director – National PGA

“Listen to this dude Rufus. He knows what he’s talking about.”
Bill S. Preston, Esquire | Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure
I’ll be honest; being homebound has put me on a bit of a late 80’s and early 90’s movie kick recent-
ly. Between Major League and Dumb and Dumber, I’m not sure if I’m just feeling nostalgic for a time
gone by, or if I’m realizing that my years of combing the shelves of Blockbuster for a movie might not
have been as fruitless as some might think. For my readers born after 1990, Blockbuster was a real
thing, not just a cautionary tale about not understanding your market or your customer. Perhaps
there were little nuggets of wisdom sprinkled throughout the movies of my youth. To test the theory,
we dive headfirst into Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.
The year is 1989 and Bill and Ted need help. Ted has a one way ticket to military school and the
future of the Wyld Stallyns is in question if the two best friends can’t find a way to pass their history
class. Unbeknownst to them, the fate of the entire universe hinges on the success of the Wyld Stal-
lyns. Enter Rufus, played by the irreverent George Carlin, sent from the future as a mentor of sorts to
guide the hapless duo through time to a passing grade and a prosperous future for all. A ridiculous
movie and premise to be sure, but what if Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure could teach us something
about mentorship?
PAGE 18 Nebraska PGA News February 2021• Mentees actively seek out the right mentors. In the quote above from the movie, Ted’s future
self makes it clear that Rufus is there to help, and his advice should be heeded. Unfortunately, we
don’t have our future selves guiding us to find a mentor, but we do have our present selves. We
have our values, our goals, and our experience - seek out those people who share your values, un-
derstand your path, and have the experience necessary to help (shameless plug, your local Career
Consultant can help you here).
•
• Mentors guide, they don’t “do”, and Mentees put in the work. Rufus wasn’t there to make sure
that Bill and Ted passed History or do the work for them, but he gave them the tools, guidance, and
confidence so that they could do it themselves. That’s a valuable lesson for mentors and mentees
everywhere.
•
• Mentors provide access to resources, Mentees utilize them to their full potential. In the case
of Bill and Ted, the physical resource that Rufus provided was a time machine that brought them
face to face with some of history’s greatest individuals. For those of us who lack access to time trav-
eling technology, mentors can connect us to the people, education, and network to help us grow
personally and professionally. Moreover, they ask us the hard questions to bring about real change
in our lives - perspective is a resource.
•
• Mentorship is about relationships, and relationships go both ways. The mentor to mentee re-
lationship is a complicated one. It requires engagement and genuine care on both sides of the
coin. The real beauty of it all is that the relationship is the reward for BOTH parties.
In the end, Bill and Ted passed their history class, military school was avoided, and the fate of the
world was secured. But what the Wyld Stallyns really got from their excellent adventure was a se-
ries of relationships that enriched their lives. Rufus, their mentor, would return in Bogus Journey,
and inexplicably his daughter would play the mentor role in the 2020 reboot of the series. Incongru-
ous plot lines aside, the relationship between our two hapless heroes and the one who helps to
guide, connect, and support them endures.
In what promises to be “excellent”, I invite you to listen to Episode 6 of Consultant Conversa-
tions, where Jason Boaz, Mike Mueller, Todd Smith, and I discuss the relationships between mentors
and mentees. You can find it on your favorite podcast platforms:

PAGE 21 Nebraska PGA News February 2021Youth on Course — the non-profit organization dedicated
to opening doors, supporting dreams and transforming the
lives of young people through opportunities on and off the
golf course – has partnered with United Golfers Associa-
tion (UGA) to broaden awareness of the sport among
communities of color.
Committed to making the game more appealing, inclusive
and accessible to nurture the next generation of lifelong
players and lovers of the game, the partnership will grant
all UGA junior members a Youth on Course membership
that provides the opportunity to play rounds of golf for $5
or less at more than 1,400 courses nationwide along with
access to GolfPass’ library of over 4,000 instructional videos and the perks of booking YOC
rounds online with GolfNow. Members also benefit from career opportunities through Youth
on Course’s caddie and internship programs and college scholarships.
“We recognize that providing access to play golf affordably and opening doors of opportunity
are important vehicles in creating a more inclusive space for young people of color, from the
first time a kid steps foot on a course, to teeing it up against the world’s best,” says Michael
Lowe, vice president of programs for Youth on Course. “Had the UGA not been created in
1925, the lack of diversity we see in golf today would be even greater, so we are thankful for
UGA members and supporters, past, present and future, and are honored to be working col-
laboratively to make meaningful change.”
“We’re working to increase the diversity throughout the sport with more Black junior golfers
nationwide, and a key part of that strategy is fostering relationships with mission-driven organ-
izations that have established platforms like Youth on Course. This is a game-changer for our
youth,” says Tarek “Ty” DeLavallade, executive director of UGA, “Accessibility and affordabil-
ity have always been an issue for underserved youth in most urban communities. Together
with Youth on Course, which has built a community of more than 100,000 junior golfers, we
will get this done at a rate much faster than expected. We will work to diversify this sport to-
day so that we can inspire and usher in our new generation of golfers for tomorrow. This is
how we change golf.”
Juniors nationwide ages 6-18 may sign up for a Youth on Course membership
at www.youthoncourse.org/join. Fueling the golf industry, Youth on Course subsidizes rounds
for its members and puts money back into allied golf associations and individual courses. The
organization’s structure helps golf courses fill typically unused tee times and garner additional
revenue with more than 40% of members playing with paying adults. The amount reimbursed
back to participating courses has almost doubled in the past year, reaching close to $2.8 mil-
lion last year alone and totaling nearly $8 million dating back to 2005.
