A MESSAGE FROM RABBI JOSH BENNETT
So, let us leave behind a country better than one we were left. With
every breath from my bronze-pounded chest, we will raise this wounded
world into a wondrous one. We will rise from the gold-limned hills of the
West. We will rise from the wind-swept Northeast where our forefathers
first realized revolution. We will rise from the lake-rimmed cities of
the Midwestern states. We will rise from the sun-baked South. We will
rebuild, reconcile and recover in every known nook of our nation, in every
corner called our country our people diverse and beautiful will emerge
    battered and beautiful.
--Amanda Gorman, The Hill We Climb

                              A TIME OF TRANSITION
In a moment more divided than any other in my
lifetime, I am acutely aware of the power of change.
Hesitant to face the challenge, I see an amazing
opportunity ahead for our nation, our congregation,
and my own personal experience as a father. I begin
my thoughts with a personal reflection.

JANUARY 20, 2021 was a day of change for my family. Our daughter,
Maddie, turned 21 marking her own transition from childhood
dependence to standing on the cusp of her adult life. As a father, it was
bittersweet to celebrate this birthday. On one hand, I want to hang on
tight to the little girl that was! And on the other, I am proud to let her
leave her imprint on the world. Along with so many other students who
are attempting to navigate their way through online courses, she is
building a foundation for success. The world will look different than the
one she knew only months ago…but the opportunities are endless. This
is the amazing reality of change…the past does not define the future.
I have no idea what will come next for her and her classmates. I am
hesitant to let go…but I know she is prepared for whatever will assail her.

JANUARY 20, 2021 was a day of change for Temple Israel. On that
afternoon, I opened an email from an acquaintance who grew up at

Temple Israel but now lives in Chicago. His note included notification
that Temple would soon receive a philanthropic gift to cover a
scholarship for a teen to participate in a future Teen Mission to Israel.
As a 16-year-old, the donor had been approached by Rabbi Syme (of
blessed memory) and offered him the chance to go to Israel. It was a
life changing experience…and this was the payback. Hesitant to travel
now, Temple Israel will continue to live up to our history in Zionism as
we support the Jewish Homeland now and in the future. And here at
home, we will be here to support your spiritual needs even in an evolving
Jewish world. We will be here for you in every way you need us.

JANUARY 20, 2021 was a day of change for our nation and the world.
The words above are excerpted from the poem written and recited by
Amanda Gorman at the inauguration of President Joseph R. Biden in
Washington, D.C. The Hill We Climb seems to capture the moment like
no other in history. Unlike previous celebrations of a new president this
event took place in a locked-down city and in front of a divided nation…
in the middle of a pandemic. We are Democrat & Republican. We are
wearing masks and not. We are upset and elated. We are vaccinated and
waiting for our turn in line.

What I realize as I consider these three January 20th moments is that we
are at a crossroads for our nation, community, and congregation. We can
stand still…stuck in the moment…or we can move forward with creativity,
love, and hope for next generations. Hesitant to begin gathering again…
concerned for social welfare and justice…dedicated to compassion
and dialogue…committed to Israel…connected to your spirit, we stand
excited to lead our congregation into the future. In the words of Pirke
Avot, “If not now, when?” Or in the words of our Youth Poet Laureate…

When day comes, we step out of the shade aflame and unafraid. The
new dawn blooms as we free it. For there is always light. If only we’re
brave enough to see it. If only we’re brave enough to be it.

In Review - The Great Escape: YFTI participated in a virtual escape game.
The game was filled with puzzles, riddles and adventure. We had an
amazing time working together to escape the room, find the gold and in
 record time!
In Review - Tu B’Shevat Tasting Experience: Bunk45 enjoyed delicious
Tu B’shevat traditional foods and put a special Bunk45 twist to their own
tasting experience. We had fun learning and being challenged by a fun
game of trivia to wrap up the night.
