FROM THE PRESIDENT
Hello one and all and welcome to the first game of the 2021 season.
Today we welcome the 18’s and Reserve teams from Kingsley Westside.
While in the main game we welcome our close neighbours in Northern City to our home. Wishing all
players and supporters of both clubs a good afternoon no matter the results.
Last Saturday night we celebrated in style the 50th birthday of our great club and it was a fantastic
start to the year long celebrations we have planned.
My first task of the year is to thank all those involved in putting on this fantastic night and it shows
the great strides we have made as a club over these 50 years.
Secondly we welcome Gerhard Janssen and his family to the Balga Soccer Club. In the short time
here you have all become involved in our progress and growth and we look forward to a long and
fruitful relationship with you all. This also goes to the many new players that have arrived over the
summer and we welcome you all to the family and trust you will enjoy the season here at Balga.
Of course our thanks also goes to Danny Cain who had to relinquish the reins of the first team due to
health. We deeply appreciate all your efforts last year in very difficult circumstances. Thankfully we
have not lost Danny to the family as he remains as an active board member and has also become
involved with our newest group of youngsters in our 3 and 4 year olds, a group which is growing in
numbers weekly and look like having a wonderful time with the round ball.
The women’s side of the club continues to grow and we have added an U12 and U18 teams to our
program this year. We also welcome Martyn and Wilson to the coaching staff.
Balga is very proud to announce that this year, not only will our State League women’s team wear
the same 50th anniversary kit but they will also enjoy the same win/draw bonuses that the men’s
team will receive. This is just further proof that Balga includes everyone on an equal footing. We
have also been able to upgrade both men’s and women’s training equipment thanks in no small part
to Ron and Liz. Fantastic from you both and wishing you an enjoyable year where every player helps
to look after all this new equipment and return it all to the correct positions in the store room.
Today at the gate we will be selling tickets in our Easter Raffle and we ask you to support this to
allow us to continue to look after all the players and supporters of your club.
Have a great afternoon and hope to see you in the canteen and bar during and after the games.
Go the Black N Greens

                           OUR GUESTS

Today marks the first time that Balga and Northern City have met at senior
level in what will be a local derby. Based in Mirrabooka, Northern City were
established only a few years ago. In 2020 the club joined the Fourth Division of
the Amateur League, and it was met with instant success, with the team
finishing runners-up to Fremantle City. The winners of today’s game will move
into Round Four of the FFA Cup, in a home game against Amateur League
Premier Division side North Perth United.

We would also like to welcome Kingsley Westside to Princess Road Reserve
today who will meet our Reserves and Under 18’s teams in the State Cup
before the first team match.

The winners of the Reserves and Under 18’s will go on to play NPL-WA club
Sorrento at home on Easter Monday.

FROM THE COACH – FIRST TEAM

Hello parents, friends, fans and visitors of BALGA SC!

I want to welcome our guests from Northern City FC to our home game in the
Third Round of the FFA Cup 2021.

Today marks the first game for a lot of players in our squad and myself within
an official competition for BALGA SC following a long pre-season preparation.
We nonetheless already feel part of the fantastic BALGA family.

The club and the committee around our President Ken Shorto helped us to
have a great pre-season, and it feels good to have our first game at our home
ground in 2021.

The cup has its own rules, so it will need a 100% performance from our team in
order to reach the next round. We will all do our very best to present an
entertaining performance to you and we hope for your support for our BALGA
Boys!

Your coach,

Gerhard Janssen

                     FROM THE COACH – RESERVES

The Reserves had a great season last year finishing 3rd and making the play-offs, where we
met Kingsley who beat us and went on to win the Grand Final.
It was a great achievement, especially as we finished bottom of the league the year before.

But that was 2020, and a new season means we can take nothing for granted. The hard
work starts all over again.

After having no pre-season last year, it has been good having one this year. We have the
same core players with a few additions, which will strengthen the squad.

Today will be tough, but a good test for some of our new players who are new to this
division.

Last but definitely not least, I would like to welcome Kingsley Westside. We had some great
games against them last year. Ben and his boys certainly brought the best out of us (apart
from the semi-final...). They were the best team in the league last year and deserved to win
the GF - I wish them all the very best for the 2021 season.

I would also like to wish Gerhard and Manny the very best for the 1st team and U18’s
respectively.

Enjoy the games this afternoon - may they all be played in the right spirit

                                            Cup Games
For the first Balga flashback of the 2021 season, we turn to cup games of the past, where we have seen many
highs as well as lows.

Our first success in the cup was in 1975, when we won the Amateur Cup. The following year our reserves also
went all the way. Our first venture into the D'Orsogna (State) Cup was in 1976 while we were an Amateur
Premier side. We shocked Saturday side Cockburn United 7-1, before getting thrashed by cup holders Morley-
Windmills in the next round.

Our best ever run in the State Cup was in 1980. As a third tier club, we defeated second tier Bassendean
Caledonian 1-0 in the first round, then beating Amateur side Belmont 4-2, with the shock of the year being the
2-1 home win over top flight side East Fremantle Tricolore. In the quarter-finals Balga met another Premier
side in North Perth Croatia, and just went down by 1-0 to miss out on a semi-final place.

In 1981 Balga shocked Forrestfield United (who went on to finish 2nd in the Premier League) by 2-1 before
going out in the following round to Perth Azzurri. In 1983 our Under 18's would go on to make the final, but
lose 3-2 to Gosnells City, while in 1986 our Reserves would go down in a tight cup final against Inglewood Kiev,
losing the match 3-2.

Our next highlight against higher opposition for our first team in the cup was in 1993. Even though we lost the
game, we pushed Premier League heavyweights Stirling Macedonia all the way, being in front 1-0 for most of
the game. Two late goals for Macedonia helped them avoid embarrassment. In 1996 as a third tier club Balga
defeated a strong Dianella White Eagles who were a league above us.

In 1998 we were forced to go back to the Amateur competition, which meant we were back in the Amateur
Cup. Our best run after that period was when the club made it to the quarter-finals in 2002 before going down
to Fremantle United 3-2. Our Masters team had cup success in 2000 when they won the trophy, and finished
runners-up two years later.

Plus who could forget our big FFA Cup fixtures away to NPL-WA club Inglewood United only two years ago.
Coached by Aleks Vrteski, against all odds, Balga who by now were back in the Second Division of the State
League beat the NPL team 3-1.
