Fifth Sunday After Epiphany 6 February 2022 The miraculous catch of fish – Modern icon 8am Eucharist (BCP) 10am Sung Eucharist (also via YouTube) Setting: Collegium Regale – Herbert Howells
From the Associate Priest Dear parishioners and friends, And I said, ‘Here am I; send me!’ These words from the book of the prophet Isaiah are a powerful reminder of our ability to contribute to the world around us, in both small and large ways. I’m always moved by the enthusiasm of these words, fuelled by a notion that whatever is needed, Isaiah is willing to try to the best of his ability. The Christian faith calls us to be people who are willing to help and contribute, and to know that doing so is a profession of our faith, and uses the gifts, skills and abilities that God has generously given us. I hope that throughout the week, you'll look for (and make the most of) these moments where you can also say 'Here am I; send me!'. The past week at CCSY … It’s been a busy week at Christ Church. A long-delayed wedding was held yesterday afternoon, and School Chapel services also recommenced for 2022 with the Badge Ceremony (where Year 6 leaders and ambassadors receive their badges of office) and Years 4 to 6 Chapel on Friday morning. It is wonderful to see that the Church is busy with these services, and that both the School and wider community are able to be welcomed into Christ Church to mark these special events. Best wishes, and many blessings, - Mtr Emily. GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME We gather in this sacred space on the traditional lands of the Kulin nations, and we respectfully acknowledge the current and past elders of the Wurundjeri and Boonerwrung peoples. All stand when the entrance bell is rung God, you are clothed with light, as with a garment fair, and in your holy sight the saints your beauty wear; the heavens and all therein express the glory of your holiness. Give me a robe of light that I may walk with you: bright as the stars are bright, pure as their light is pure; whose texture sin shall never stain, but ever undefiled remain. But can a sinner dare, in rags, and sore ashamed, lift up to God the prayer which now my lips have framed, while glowing seraphs fold their wings, and pour their sinless offerings? O Christ, I lift my eyes; your love for me I own; in your great sacrifice remains my hope alone; the robe is mine, my soul to dress, of everlasting righteousness. Hymn from the Russian Church tr. John Brownlie 1857–1925 alt. Reproduced with permission Tune: Harewood TiS 193 3
In the name of God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Words of welcome Let us pray together Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God’s forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only begotten Son Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. 4
Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Let us pray. Most holy God, in whose presence angels serve in awe, and whose glory fills all heaven and earth: cleanse our unclean lips and transform us by your grace so that your word spoken through us may bring many to your salvation; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen. THE LITURGY OF THE WORD All sit A reading from the book of Isaiah 6:1-8 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another and said: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory.’ The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. And I said: ‘Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!’ Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: ‘Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out.’ Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I; send me!’ For the word of the Lord, thanks be to God. 5
Psalm 138 1. I will give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart: even before the gods will I sing your praises. 2. I will bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name: because of your faithfulness and your loving-kindness, for you have made your name and your word supreme over all things. 3. At a time when I called to you, you gave me answer: and put new strength within my soul. 4. All the kings of the earth shall praise you, O Lord: for they have heard the words of your mouth; 5. And they shall sing the ways of the Lord: that the glory of the Lord is great. 6. For though the Lord is exalted, he looks upon the lowly: and he comprehends the proud from afar. 7. Though I walk in the midst of danger, yet will you preserve my life: you will stretch out your hand against the fury of my enemies, and your right hand shall save me. 8. The Lord will complete his purpose for me: your loving-kindness, O Lord, endures for ever; do not forsake the work of your own hands. Chant: Thalban-Ball. Text: APBA A reading from the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians 15:1-11 Now I should remind you, brothers and sisters, of the good news that I proclaimed to you, which you in turn received, in which also you stand, through which also you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message that I proclaimed to you—unless you have come to believe in vain. For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to someone untimely born, he appeared also to me. For I am the least of the apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace towards me has not been in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them—though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. Whether then it was I or they, so we proclaim and so you have come to believe. For the word of the Lord, thanks be to God. 6
All stand Stand up, and bless the Lord, ye people of God’s choice; stand up, and bless the Lord your God with heart, and soul, and voice. Though high above all praise, above all blessing high, who would not fear God’s holy name, and praise and magnify? O for the living flame from God’s own altar brought, to touch our lips, our minds inspire, and wing to heaven our thought. God is our strength and song, and Christ’s salvation ours; then be God’s love in Christ proclaimed with all our ransomed powers. Stand up and bless the Lord, the Lord your God adore; stand up and bless God’s glorious name, henceforth for evermore. James Montgomery (1771-1854) Tune: Carlisle (TiS 449) Jesus is the light of the nations: The hope of all who thirst for righteousness and peace. Alleluia. 7
The Lord be with you. And also with you. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke 5:1-11 Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. Once while Jesus was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret, and the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he saw two boats there at the shore of the lake; the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, ‘Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.’ Simon answered, ‘Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets.’ When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to break. So they signalled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, ‘Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!’ For he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch of fish that they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, ‘Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people.’ When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him. For the Gospel of the Lord, praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. All sit Sermon – The Revd Emily Fraser All stand Let us together affirm the faith of the Church: We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. 8
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. All kneel or sit Let us pray for the world and for the Church. After each prayer …hear our prayer. After thanksgiving for those who have died Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord; and let light perpetual shine upon them. Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith, we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. All stand We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. 9
No collection is taken during the hymn. Instead, there is a retiring collection at the end of the service. Dear Father, Lord of humankind, forgive our foolish ways; reclothe us in our rightful mind: in purer lives thy service find, in deeper reverence, praise. in deeper reverence, praise. In simple trust like theirs who heard, beside the Syrian sea, the gracious calling of the Lord, let us, like them, without a word rise up and follow thee, rise up and follow thee. O sabbath rest by Galilee! O calm of hills above, where Jesus knelt to share with thee the silence of eternity, interpreted by love, interpreted by love! Drop thy still dews of quietness, till all our strivings cease; take from our souls the strain and stress, and let our ordered lives confess the beauty of thy peace, the beauty of thy peace. Breathe through the heats of our desire thy coolness and thy balm; let sense be dumb, let flesh retire; speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire, O still small voice of calm, O still small voice of calm. John Greenleaf Whittier 1807–92 alt. Reproduced with permission Tune: Repton. TiS 598 The response to the Offertory Prayers is: Blessed be God for ever. 10
THE GREAT THANKSGIVING … for ever praising you and singing… Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory: Glory be to thee, O Lord most High. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Great is the mystery of faith: … in songs of never-ending praise: As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. 11
BREAKING OF THE BREAD & COMMUNION We who are many are one body: For we all share in the one bread. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace. Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed. Communicant members of any church are welcome to receive Holy Communion, which is administered in one kind only (the bread). If you would prefer a blessing, indicate this by crossing your arms over your chest. Please feel free to stand or kneel to receive Communion. During communion the choir will sing Let all mortal flesh, by Edward Bairstow Let us pray. Living God, in this holy meal you fill us with new hope. May the power of your love, which we have known in word and sacrament, continue your saving work among us, give us courage for our pilgrimage, and bring us to the joys you promise, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 12
