There is much to look forward to in this season’s new programme.
A number of highlights immediately catch the eye, with two new
productions for The Playhouse Theatre & Peacebuilding Academy
reflecting people’s first-hand experiences of The Troubles, plus visits

a performance of her own moving story of ‘The Emigrant Woman’s
Tale’ by a poet with a unique voice in Northern Ireland, Csilla Toldy.
The Arts Council is proud to be the principal funder of The Playhouse
through our Public and National Lottery funds. This year the National

TRUE STORIES FROM THE FRONT LINE
Devised by the Cast
Directed by Ailin Conant
Throat clenches. Palm sweats. Vision tunnels.
Breath shallows. Stomach knots. We all share
a nervous system designed to respond to crisis
in a certain way. But what happens when your
professional duty requires you to run towards
the scene of the horror, at a time when every-
one else is running away?
First Response has been created and
performed by Fire-fighters, Paramedics,
Nurses, Journalists, Community Workers,
and Counsellors who worked the front lines
of some of the most difficult experiences of
The Troubles. What secrets do these men and
women hold in their physiology, and how can
their story help us understand ourselves and
the society we live in today?

THE EMIGRANT WOMAN’S TALE
Friday 6th March, 8pm
Tickets £12/ £10

The Emigrant Woman’s Tale is a story told
through poetry, song and spoken word.
“An inspirational performance that is sometimes
humorous, often moving and always thought
provoking....highly recommended.” Colum
Sands, BBC Radio Ulster
The story describes poet Csilla Toldy’s growing
up and escape from Communist Hungary to
eventually living in Northern Ireland - juxtaposed
with songwriter Fil Campbell’s story of growing
up on the Irish border and staying in Northern
Ireland throughout the conflict.
A tale of two girls from opposite ends of Europe
and when their paths crossed many common
themes emerged.

An exciting new play chronicling the extraordinary
life of Gerry Conlon (The Guildford 4) following his
release from prison in 1989. No one can forget the
TV images of him outside The Old Bailey, proclaim-
ing, “I am a totally innocent man!” This play charts
Conlon’s journey into ‘freedom’ as he received
over £1million pounds, became a cause-celebre
running in the same circles as Johnny Depp and
Daniel Day Lewis. He seemed to have it all but,
fuelled by an addiction to crack-cocaine, his life
was spiralling out of control. What emerges from
the darkness is Conlon’s resilience and his eventual
life-changing recovery to beat his demons to
become a world-renowned Human Rights cam-
paigner. Written by Gerry’s lifelong friend Richard
O’Rawe and Martin Lynch the play explores tri-
umph of the human spirit over extreme adversity.

Witness production, and talk about their experi-
ences.
