Guidelines
When assessing the funding applications Kiwis for kiwi and the Kiwi Recovery Group follow some
guiding principles in order to ensure effective kiwi protection and consistency with their advice and
recommendations. Some of the aspects we consider include;

    • That the management provides a direct benefit for kiwi. We fully acknowledge that fully
        integrated pest management is the best approach, but we target our funding on mustelid, cat
        and dog control. Possum and rodent control, though important, is not a priority for Kiwis for
        kiwi funding.

    • Projects are required to follow agreed trapping best practice standards (at a minimum)
        including trap checks scheduled for 12-14 times a year. Trapping programmes should
        consider periodic use of toxin for un-trappable stoats, trapping as large an area as possible
        and timing the extra trap checks for summer to benefit chick survival.

    • Provision of pest and predator control auditing and monitoring information.

    •   Projects following the developed guidelines if carrying out;

            o   Translocations
            o   Advocacy with wild kiwi

    • All kiwi handlers must be accredited handlers

    • Transparency of funding sources and needs - list sources of other funding clearly identifying
        what funding is for.

Please note that projects found to be in violation of best practice standards will not be eligible
to retain or receive funding from Kiwis for kiwi.

                                                                                                        9
