TERRORISM DOES NOT TAKE A HOLIDAY
Since we were here last year here are a few of the attacks that have been perpetrated:

 March 7, 2017 – Bhopal-Ujjan passenger June 19, 2017 – van ramming
train bombing, Madhya Pradesh, India Finsbury Park Mosque

on the Champs Elysee in Paris in Barcelona

   May 22, 2017 – attack in Manchester, September 15, 2017 – bucket bomb
England at the Ariana Grande concert exploding on London Tube

        June 3, 2017 – van ramming October 31, 2017 – truck ramming into
and stabbing in London cyclists and pedestrians in New York City

    June 6, 2017 – Policeman attacked December 1, 2017 – nail bomb
with a hammer outside Notre Dame in market, Potsdam, Germany
          Cathedral, Paris, France
                                                 December 12, 2017 – man detonates pipe
July 10, 2017 – Amarnath Yatra attack, bomb in walkway beneath Port Authority
Jammu & Kashmir, India Terminal in New York City

It is very apparent we are in a continuing fight against foes that are becoming more
challenging to battle against as individuals become radicalized and decide to do others harm.

The Queen Elizabeth II September 11th Garden will always be a haven of peace and
remembrance for those lives lost in any conflict or any terrorist attack.

Dear Friends,

As an Honorary Patron of the Queen Elizabeth 11 Garden, it is my privilege to welcome you to this
gala dinner in aid of the Garden. Since I arrived in New York last November I have seen that the
generosity of the Garden’s patrons, including those gathered here tonight, have meant that this
unique site of remembrance and peace is in an excellent position to achieve its conservancy target
and sustain the Garden in perpetuity.

Over the years the Garden has welcomed a number of other Commonwealth countries to the fold,
making it a permanent place of remembrance for the fallen of their respective nations. In my short
time here, I have seen how much the Garden matters to people. I am inspired by the dedication and
passion that the Garden board and its supporters and volunteers bring to their work. I am moved by
the memories and the courage of the families of 9/11 victims. The Garden continues to be hugely
important. It is a terrible thing to grieve, but to do so united is surely to alleviate that grief, if only by
a little.

The Garden has become an indelible part of the landscape of downtown Manhattan. For the
Commonwealth community, it is certainly one of the most important features of the city.

Each of tonight’s honourees has demonstrated significant leadership in their field and helped advance
the fundamental values that the Garden supports. My congratulations to John Catsimatidis, Chairman
& CEO of the Red Apple Group, who receives tonight’s Alexander Hamilton Award for Leadership; Lt
General Ramesh Hagali, Former Deputy Chief of Army Staff, Indian Army who receives the Leadership
Award for the Fight against Global Terrorism; Jamie Forese, President of Citigroup and CEO of the
Institutional Clients Group who receives The Global Corporate Leadership Award; Van Hipp, Jr.,
Chaiman of American Defense International Inc. who receives the Award for Leadership in National
Security; Doug Elix, AO Retired Senior VP & Group Executive, IBM who receives the Global Leadership
Award for Business & Philanthropy; and Christina Valentine, Founder of All in All the Time Foundation
who receives The McGarahan Award for Heroism. I would like to welcome Guest Speaker, The
Honourable Stephen Harper, former Prime Minister of Canada.

Many thanks to Gotham Hall for hosting us tonight. My personal thanks and admiration on this
occasion to all those who have worked so hard to bring us this far including my fellow Consuls General,
the Garden officers and Board, and the team who manage the site all year round.

I hope you have a wonderful evening.

Best,

Antony Phillipson

        Dear Friends:

Please accept my warmest greetings and sincerest congratulations as you gather for the
Queen Elizabeth II September 11th Garden’s Gala Dinner. I am grateful for the opportunity to
recognize the contributions of the Queen Elizabeth II Garden, the Commonwealth countries
lending their support and this evening’s honorees on this auspicious occasion.

In the devastating aftermath of the September 11 attacks, organizations such as Queen
Elizabeth II September 11th Garden proved that through devastation can emerge a mission of
friendship, unity and peace. The Queen Elizabeth II September 11th Garden was created in
remembrance of the 67 British victims who lost their lives in the tragic attacks of September 11,
2001. The garden continues to strengthen the historic ties of friendship and unity between the
United States, the Commonwealth countries and the United Kingdom. I applaud the dedication
and commitment of the Queen Elizabeth II September 11th Garden for its leadership, staff and
everyone involved in preserving and maintaining the ideals of freedom and growth.

Furthermore, I would like to congratulate this year’s honorees: John Catsimatidis,
recipient of the Alexander Hamilton Award for Leadership; Lt. General Remaesh Halgali,
recipient of the Leadership Award for the Fight against Global Terrorism; Jamie Forese,
recipient of the Global Corporate Leadership Award; Van Hipp, Jr., recipient of the Award for
Leadership in National Security, Doug Elix, recipient of the Global Leadership Award for
Business & Philanthropy; and Christina Valentine, recipient of the McGarahan Award for
Heroism. I am honored to join everyone gathered here tonight in recognizing these outstanding
individuals for their devotion to the mission of the Queen Elizabeth II September 11th Garden.
Their commitment to this noble endeavor serves an inspiration to us all.

Congratulations and thank you for your hard work on behalf of British-American

                                       Former Prime Minister of Canada

The Right Honourable Stephen Harper served as
Canada’s 22nd Prime Minister from 2006 to 2015, the
longest-serving Conservative Leader to hold this office
since Canada’s founding Prime Minister passed away
in 1891. Prime Minister Harper created the modern
Conservative Party of Canada and won three successive
national elections, in 2006, 2008, and 2011. A strong
advocate for free trade and open markets, Prime Minister
Harper led a government that focused on pragmatic,
growth-oriented economic policies and results-driven
social policy. Under his leadership, Canada reduced
federal taxes to their lowest level in 50 years, created
1.3 million new jobs, balanced the budget while making
critical investments in health care and infrastructure,
attracted new investment and fostered innovation.

During his time in office, Prime Minister Harper
oversaw historic trade negotiations to expand Canada’s
commercial relationships including: the conclusion of
the Canada-Europe Trade Agreement, the Canada-
Korea Free Trade Agreement, the Canada-Colombia
Free Trade Agreement, a modernized Canada-Israel
Free Trade Agreement, and Canada’s entrance into suppression of dissidents. Prime Minister Harper led
the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Additionally, he served the global call for sanctions against Russia, and was a

Queen Elizabeth II September 11th Garden and support the amazing honorees this evening.

Allied Forces Foundation (AFF) is a British-American foundation that works to raise awareness and funding
for wounded service personnel, veterans and their families, particularly those affected by the conflicts of Iraq
and Afghanistan. A primary focus of AFF is to reinvigorate the spirit of comradeship and teamwork that so
many wounded, ill and injured (WII) serving personnel and veterans miss when forced to return to a desk
job or civilian life.

This is achieved through enabling bringing together veterans from the two nations in different challenges
around the world like the upcoming Cateran Yomp (a 24 hike across the Scottish Highlands) in Scotland in
June, Marine Corp Marathon (MCM) in Washington DC, Appalachian Yomp from Harper’s Ferry to
Gettysburg, and Denmark Warrior Week in Copenhagen. These challenges deliver an opportunity for WII
to come together with other veterans who are facing similar experiences. It enhances the US/UK relationship
between WII personnel from nations who have fought together and now recover together.
