Just a little note from your Potentate.... The officers of Hella Shrine for 2022 were installed on January 15th and what a way to kick off the year. Imperial Sir Matt Sturlaugson was the installing officer assisted by our own Right Worshipful Wendall Miller, past Grand Master. After the installation, we had a patient am- bassador, Gabbi Sturlaugson, from Shriners Children’s speak about her experience. We finished the night out with music from the Director’s Staff Band. There were over 175 people in attendance, and it was good to see the ballroom full again and everyone I talked to had a great time. My goal for the year is to put the fun and fellowship back in Hella and we certainly got off to a good start. It seems like there is always something going on at Hella. February 3rd is the East West Shrine Bowl and the Garland Shrine Club is going to be hosting a watching party at Matts Rancho Martinez. Then we have the 101 Super Bowl party on Sunday the 13th. This event has grown every year before long we will have to move it from the Terrace room to the ball room. This year, Most Worshipful Brad Billings, Grand Master of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Texas, will be attending the party. The Super Bowl party at Hella is on his Grand Masters calendar on the Grand Lodge website. This is great advertising for Hella and we may get a lot of North Texas masons coming out to see the fun and fellowship. Let’s welcome them to the Shrine and show them how much fun it is to be a Shriner. Who knows, we may get a couple of petitions out of it. At our February Stated Meeting, I have arranged for a young man from Red Oak DeMolay to give the Flower Talk. If you are a senior DeMolay this will bring back memories, and if you have not seen the Flower Talk before, it will impress you with the ritual work these young men do. The masonic youth groups are great source for future masons and Shriners. We then finish out the month with the Director’s Staff Chili Cookoff on February 26th and 27th. This is a CASI sanctioned cookoff and we always need judges so come on down and enjoy the festivities. Contact Ken Dillingham if you need additional details. Once again, thank you for electing me to serve Hella as Potentate. With your help we can make this a great year as we have fun and fellowship while raising money for the greatest philanthropy on earth, Shriners Children’s. If you have any ideas or suggestions my door is always open and I look forward to hearing from you. Nick Fehrenbach Potentate Greetings from First Lady Laurie! Wow, what a great night we had at Hella’s January Stated Meeting and Installation! We were honored to have Imperial Sir Matt Sturlaugson, Lady Mandii and their daughter, Gabbi, at the Instal- lation along with Imperial Sir Marty Bartlett and Lady Martha. Imperial Sir Matt Installed our officers, Mandii spoke on the ap that’s available from Shriners Hospital for Children so that you can help diagnose your children and grandchildren checking for Scoliosis. Their daughter Gabby shared her experiences as a Shriner patient. Bringing many tears to many of us. I kicked off my First Lady’s Project – “Help Change a Child’s Life.” You can help by donating your change in the ma- son jars I provided. If you weren’t there, no worries, I will have them at future Stated Meetings. Each meeting you will be able to bring your jar to me, we’ll empty it and you can take it back. I’ll also be having a purse sale at one of my Ladies Program, a Fashion Show in September, and a Masquerade ball in October. All proceeds from the collection of coins (I’ll accept bills and checks too of course), and my special events will benefit Shriners Children Texas for Scoliosis Research. Please help change a child’s life! Warm regards, Laurie Fehrenbach First Lady The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas Page 3
Chief Rabban It’s great to be a Shriner. Thanks to all the Nobility for installing me as Hella’s Chief Rabban for 2022, it’s a great honor! This year will only continue the upward trend as we continue the recovery efforts that Covid 19 dealt us in 2020. We have a great Divan lineup, and I know this year will set a financial base for years to come. As Chief Rabban, I’m charged with major fund raiser(s). That being said, we have five Kid Fest shows planned this year, along with two other events in planning, which I’ll speak to once confirmed, permitted and the business is in order. The Kid Fest / Magic shows; Sherman, Tx, June 17th at the Kid-Key Auditorium 7:00 pm, Texarkana June 20th at the Elks Lodge @ 7:00 pm, and Hella Temple December 17th, 3 and 7 pm. More to come as the new year’s business is developed and finalized. We continue to encourage each of you to be safe, and if you don’t feel comfortable in a group setting, you are encouraged to wear your mask and social distance where possible during our events. All Nobles must continue to exhibit an Ambassador role when communicating our purpose and activities to all Master Masons within the appendant bodies that we attend. This is VERY important! Our Illustrious Potentate has several new and different activities planned for 2022, so be attentive to the Camel’s Calf and participate with your Hella family and friends whenever possible… fun and fellowship straight ahead! We are HELLA, and we serve the greatest purpose in support of our Shriners Chil- dren’s Hospital and your Temple. Please stand up and be counted when called upon to lead or participate! Be safe, diligent and stay healthy! Nate Fuller Chief Rabban Potentate’s Leadership Conference The 2022 Leadership Conference will be Saturday, January 29, 2022. We will have a breakfast at 8:00 followed by the conference at 9:00. All Nobles are invited to attend, and all Shrine Club Presidents and Unit Leaders should attend. If you are a Club or Unit Leader and cannot be there, please make sure there is a representative of your Club or Unit who can represent your group. There will be a rollcall of Units and Clubs. We will discuss the Shrine calendar as well as our fundraising goals, membership program and other initiatives for the year. Come on down, meet your new officers and learn about what is going on at your Temple this year. Page 4 The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas
Assistant Rabban Greetings! First and foremost, let me again thank the Nobility of Hella Shrine for electing me to the position of Assistant Rabban. I am honored to serve you. I’m looking for- ward to a great year ahead for Hella! I’m looking forward to getting to work with the Membership Team and doing all we can to help bring in new Nobles for Hella. We have several ideas we will put into place to help us. We’ll visit blue lodges, and look to start new units geared to the 30-40 year old Nobles. Thru hard work and fresh ideas we can help Hella remain the best Temple in Texas! Come join us! We will meet the 4th Wednesday of the month in the Terrace Room. We will always have dinner at 6:30 pm and our meeting at 7:00 pm. We will discuss our ceremonials, and new ideas for new Nobles and we will have speakers and guests. Every Noble at Hella Shrine is part of our Membership Team! We’re all responsible, in our own ways, in helping bring in new Nobles. Thank you for your time and for your efforts for Hella! It does not go unnoticed! Warren Allen Hella Temple High Priest and Prophet Oriental Guide As I begin this next phase of service in my Masonic journey, I want to thank all of those who encouraged me and supported me. As your Oriental Guide I have a lot to learn and a lot of knowledge to absorb. I welcome the challenge and the opportunity to be a part of such a fine team as we lead the way forward for Hella Shrine. Sue and I will be starting the month off running as we try to start meeting with each of the Shrine Clubs and organizations. We are looking forward to the Superbowl event to be held on February 13th with special guests joining us all. I am here to serve as your Oriental Guide and to aid the Shrine in any way I can. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions, needs or concerns. I am here to help. From the Treasurer’s Chest Here we are getting into February 2022 and our Leadership conference with the heads of the Units and Clubs will be January 29th. Remember, the annual Report of Shrine Clubs and Temple Units are due in February. As more and more units/clubs met and had activities in 2021, we need an accurate report of the finances. As explained in the past, we need these reports completed to show we are in compliance with IRS guidelines for nonprofits. If you need assistance in completing them, let me know. I plan on visiting all of the active clubs/units to see if I can help you in any way. As we did not have our usual Stated Meeting in January, at the February Stated Meeting I will explain how we looked at the end of 2021. Look to the financials that I post before the Stated Meetings in their usual spot outside of the ballroom to get a good snapshot of what’s going on. Another change for us in 2022 is the hiring of a new accountant. Her name is Debi Cox. She has immediately taken to the job and brings a seamless transition. If you have any questions as to what’s going on, just let me know. Lastly, dues are still due. Although the sticker for your card comes from Imperial in Tampa, you can call Hella’s front office to make payment. Let us know if there’s something going on that you need help with. Until we meet again, stay healthy, stay safe, and…. always remain Shriner Strong!! Chaplain’s Corner Good day brothers. I am so excited about being your Chaplin again. I am looking forward to a great year. A few words to think about. When we first became a Shriner, we became Shiners for two main reason. First to help raise money for our hospitals, which in turns helps out the children. After all this is what we do. The second reason we became Shriners was to have fun. It is time to start having fun again. The pan- demic has changed our lives these last couple of years, but God will see us through this. It is time to reach out to all that we have not seen for a while. If you have any concerns and would like for me to pray for you or for anyone just e-mail me at stebev2@frontier.com. Hella Flying Fezzes TO ALL NOBLES INTERESTED IN FLYING OR AVIATION The Flying Fezzes are looking good now after some long-needed renovations. We look next to the Dallas Greenville Ave. St. Patrick Day’s Parade. Look for additional notices in March. If any Noble wants to be in a parade and not walk a mile for a camel, you are most definitely welcome to join us. Please contact me, the Agitated Adjutant, at the number listed below. Today, we assist in raising money for the transportation fund and help bring awareness for the hospitals through active participation in parades. However, we still look to the skies as a unit as we continue to fly our own aircraft. Comprised of pilots and those interested in flying or aviation, an open invitation is extended to who wish to join us to complete our mission. Although this membership conference is geared towards the Shrine, it is open to members of all appendant bod- ies. There is a lot of good information that can be used in promoting membership in Masonry. Since the in person conference is in Grapevine it would be a good opportunity for anyone that wants to help promote membership in our fraternity at a minimal cost. Please share with anyone you think might be interested in attending either the virtual or in person sessions. Page 22 The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas

Suggested Blue Lodge Program Shriners International, also commonly known as The Shriners or formerly known as the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, (AAONMS) is a Masonic society established in 1870 and is headquartered in Tampa, Florida. Shriners International describes itself as a fraternity based on fun, fellowship, and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth. In The Beginning… In 1870 a group of Masons gathered frequently for lunch in New York City. Among the regulars were Walter M. Fleming, M.D. and William J. “Billy” Florence, an actor. The group frequently talked about starting a new fraternity for Masons – one centered on fun and fellowship, more than ritual. Fleming and Florence took this idea seriously enough to do some- thing about it. Billy Florence had been on tour in France, and had been invited to a party given by an Arabian diplomat. The exotic style, flavors and music of the Arabian-themed party inspired him to suggest this as a theme for the new fraternity. Walter Fleming, a de- voted fraternity brother, built on Florence’s ideas and used his knowledge of fraternal ritual to transform the Arabian theme into the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (A.A.O.N.M.S.). By June 1922 the cornerstone had been laid for the first Shriners Hospitals for Children® in Shreveport, La. The first patient to be admitted in 1922 was a little girl with a clubfoot, who had learned to walk on the top of her foot rather than the sole. In 1926 the Hella Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children in Dallas, Texas, became the Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital and the oversight and support was assumed by the Scottish Rite Bodies. Never does a Shriner stand so tall as when he stoops to help a child. Through the remarkable foresight, commitment and fundraising skills of the Shriners International (Headquarters in Tampa) nearly one million children have been treated at one of the 21 Shriners Hospitals for Children across the United States, and in Canada and Mexico. There are 196 Temples worldwide and approximately 350k members. Shriners International is a fraternity based on fun, fellowship and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief and truth. We strive to continue support and provide care for our Hospitals for Children with a worldwide network, no matter the families ability to pay. Shriners International is among the greatest Philanthropy’s on the planet! Shriners Hospitals for Children has 21 health systems within the United States! Hella Hospital Fund Raisers include (not limited to): • IHOP Day - members staff the restaurants within our jurisdiction and take donations for the purpose of supporting our kids, while IHOP offers all free pancakes on this one-day event. • Bucket Drive - Annual Collection Brigades, staff designated street locations to collect money for our hospitals (Fez on the corner, branding at its best!) Usually a two-day event. Shifts are available, any time increments from 30 min to 8 hours. • Hella Classic Dirt Track Race - Usually taking place at the Greenville Super Bowl Speedway. This event usually raises 20- 30k dollars for our kids. Toys and Bicycles are drawn by tickets obtained at the box office and handed out by Nobles of the Shrine. It’s always a great family activity! • Clubs and Units around the jurisdiction of Hella will conduct annual fund raisers as well, and contribute to the Hospitals, Hospital Transportation, etc. • We raised more than 75k dollars in 2020 through these events! You’ll meet many new friends, and be involved in as much or as little as you wish. There is NO required participation. Stated Meeting is on the third Thursday of each month, except June-August (DARK) Page 26 The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas

Dear Fellow Nobles, Being a Shriner has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I love our Fraternity and all the opportunities it affords me: To be part of a selfless, compassionate brotherhood; to improve the world and our home communities; and to make incredible differences in the lives of children. And through it all, to have fun! Sharing these experiences with other good men is why we work so hard to increase our membership numbers. So I’m especially pleased to let you know that the all-new, revamped BeAShrinerNow.com website has launched, making it easier than ever for all of us to bring new members into our fraternity. Our Shriners International marketing and membership teams have worked hard to make this tool attractive, ef- fective and very easy to use. In addition, we’ve aimed to train at least one Noble from each Temple on the ins and outs of the new website, so if you have questions, there should be someone in your Temple who can help. Together as brothers, we improve lives and communities, and we enjoy having fun together all the while. I can’t wait to start using this amazing new website to help us spread the word and bring even more men of good character into our Fraternity. Yours in the faith, James R. “Jim” Smith Imperial Potentate Page 30 The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas

Are you committed to membership? The three “R”s of membership development are recruitment, retention, and restoration. As Shriners, we all have accountability to our fraternity. It becomes our responsibility to educate others about Shriners International, create more Shriners, recruit more Freemasons, and refer more patients to Shriners Hospital for Children. These concepts are critical to the future success of our organizations. Shriners International has developed a new approach to membership development changing the membership paradigm with the introduction of a new referral program. With this new referral functionality, current nobles can now directly refer names of friends, family members and acquaintances who they feel would make good Shriners. We’re Counting on you! REFER A GOOD MAN TODAY! Page 36 The Camel’s Calf : Publication of Hella Shrine, Dallas, Texas
Dear Noble Sirs, At the Imperial Session, we saw the unveiling of new Imperial Potentate Jeff Sowder’s “Just One” campaign to increase Shriner membership. A simple but powerful idea drives this initiative: If every current Shriner commits to recruiting or restoring “just one” noble to his temple, the ranks of our brotherhood will swell tremendously. In order to build enthusiasm for the Just One initiative and keep it going, we are instituting a multi-level program for recognizing and rewarding top-line signers in the creation/restoration process for their successful efforts bringing in new members or restoring suspended members. These are: • Level 1 – Upon creation or restoration of one member, the top-line signer will receive a postcard and Just One pin from Imperial Potentate Jeff Sowder. • Level 2 – Upon bringing in two members, the top-line signer will be listed in the Shriner Magazine. • Level 3 – With three new creations or restorations, the top-line signer will receive a certificate of appreciation and a letter of commendation from Imperial Sir Sowder. • Level 4 – After five creations or restorations, the top-line signer will receive a personal phone call from the Imperial Potentate. • Level 5 – Top-line signers responsible for 10 additional Shriner brothers will receive a special invitation to attend a Just One VIP reception with the Imperial Divan at the 2020 Imperial Session. Along with these points of recognition, your temple will probably also want to honor your brothers who embrace the challenge of helping grow local membership. As a record-keeping aid, “Just One” prospect cards were presented at Imperial Session, and will be made available to temples to share with their members. If your temple has members using the cards, you will either need to assign someone to collect them and enter the information into the WebFez MDS, or have the member enter the information himself. (https:// webfez.shrinenet.org/nextstep). If you have any questions about the Just One program, please contact the Membership Office at Shriners Internation- al by email at membership@shrinenet.org or call (813) 281-0300.
