                       Baptism of Jesus, S. G. Rudl (end of 19 th Cent.), Prague

                          A voice came from heaven, saying,
                “This is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased.”
                                                                                   Matthew 3.17

OPENING HYMN New Every Morning Is the Love Hymn 7

                            1 New every morning is the love
                            our wakening and uprising prove;
                            through sleep and darkness safely brought,
                            restored to life and power and thought.
                            2 New mercies, each returning day,
                            hover around us while we pray;
                            new perils past, new sins forgiven,
                            new thoughts of God, new hopes of heaven.
                            3 If on our daily course our mind
                            be set to hallow all we find,
                            new treasures still of countless price,
                            God will provide for sacrifice.
                            4 Old friends, old scenes, will lovelier be,
                            as more of heaven in each we see;
                            some softening gleam of love and prayer
                            shall dawn on every cross and care.
                            5 The trivial round, the common task,
                            will furnish all we ought to ask;
                            room to deny ourselves, a road
                            to bring us daily nearer God.
                            6 Only, O Lord, in thy dear love,
                            fit us for perfect rest above;
                            and help us, this and every day,
                            to live more nearly as we pray.

                  You only are the Lord. You only are most high.
                  You only are the holy one, Lord Jesus Christ.
                  And now you reign with Father and with
                  Spirit one in glorious light.
Kyrie Eleison
                  Lord, have mercy.
                  Christ, have mercy.
                  Lord, have mercy.
Collect of The Day
Celebrant The Lord be with you
All               And also with you.
Celebrant         Let us pray.
Eternal Father, who at the baptism of Jesus revealed him to be your Son, anointing him with the Holy
Spirit, keep your children, born of water and the Spirit, faithful to their calling; through Jesus Christ our
Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

The Proclamation of the Word
Reading A reading from the book of the Prophet Isaiah
But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for
I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will
be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall
not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel,
your Saviour. I give Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you. Because you are
precious in my sight, and honoured, and I love you, I give people in return for you, nations in exchange
for your life. Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I
will gather you; I will say to the north, "Give them up," and to the south, "Do not withhold; bring my sons
from far away and my daughters from the end of the earth - everyone who is called by my name, whom
I created for my glory, whom I formed and made." (Isaiah 43:1-7)

A Reading from the Psalms
        Ascribe to the Lord, you gods, *
                 ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
        Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; *
                 worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.
        The voice of the Lord is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders; *
                 the Lord is upon the mighty waters.
        The voice of the Lord is a powerful voice; *
                 the voice of the Lord is a voice of splendour.
        The voice of the Lord breaks the cedar trees; *
                 the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon;
        He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, *
                 and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox.
        The voice of the Lord splits the flames of fire; the voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; *
                 the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
        The voice of the Lord makes the oak trees writhe *
                 and strips the forests bare.
        And in the temple of the Lord *
                 all are crying, “Glory!”
        The Lord sits enthroned above the flood; *
                 the Lord sits enthroned as king for evermore.
        The Lord shall give strength to his people; *
                 the Lord shall give his people the blessing of peace. (Psalm 29)

Glory to God, Source of all being, eternal Word and Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and
will be for ever. Amen.
Reading A reading from the Acts of the Apostles
Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter
and John to them. The two went down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit (for
as yet the Spirit had not come upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord
Jesus). Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. (Acts 8:14-17)

Gradual Hymn Sing of God Made Manifest Hymn 162
                      1 Sing of God made manifest
                      in a child robust and blest,
                      to whose home in Bethlehem
                      where a star had guided them,
                      magi came and gifts unbound,
                      signs mysterious and profound:
                      myrrh and frankincense and gold
                      grave and God and king foretold.
                      2 Sing of God made manifest
                      when at Jordan John confessed,
                      "I should be baptized by you,
                      but your bidding I will do."
                      Then from heaven a double sign --
                      dove-like Spirit, voice divine --
                      hailed the true Anointed One:
                      "This is my beloved Son."
                      3 Sing of God made manifest
                      when Christ came as wedding-guest
                      and at Cana gave a sign,
                      turning water into wine;
                      further still was love revealed
                      as he taught, forgave, and healed,
                      bringing light and life to all
                      who would listen to God's call.
                      4 Sing of God made manifest
                      on the cloud-capped mountain's crest,
                      where the law and prophets waned
                      so that Christ alone remained:
                      glimpse of glory, pledge of grace,
                      given as Jesus set his face
                      towards the waiting cross and grave,
                      sign of hope that God would save.

Holy Gospel
Officiant The Lord be with you.
All              And also with you.
Officiant The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Luke
All Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John,
whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, "I baptize you with water; but
one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will
baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor
and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." Now when
all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was
opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from
heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased." (Luke 3:15-17, 21-22)

Officiant        The Gospel of Christ
All Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ / Louanges à toi, seigneur Jésus
A Meditation                       Rev. Steven Maki
The Nicene Creed
Officiant Let us confess our faith, as we say,
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen
and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God
from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the
Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from
heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made
man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the
third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated
at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and
his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. With the
Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We
believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the
forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.
Amen.

Prayers of the People

                                                    5
Hymn All Praise to Thee Hymn 387
                  1 All praise be yours, for thou, O King divine,
                  didst yield the glory that of right was thine,
                  that in our darkened hearts your grace might shine. Alleluia, Alleluia!
                  2 Thou camest to us in lowliness of thought;
                  by thee the outcast and the poor were sought,
                  and by thy death was God's salvation wrought. Alleluia, Alleluia!
                  3 Let this mind be in us which was in thee,
                  who wast a servant that we might be free,
                  humbling thyself to death on Calvary. Alleluia, Alleluia!
                  4 Therefore by God’s eternal purpose,
                  thou art high exalted o'er all creatures now
                  and given the name to which all knees shall bow. Alleluia, Alleluia!
                  5 Let every tongue confess with one accord
                  in heaven and earth that Jesus Christ is Lord,
                  and God the Father be by all adored. Alleluia, Alleluia!

The Lord’s Prayer
Celebrant Trusting in the compassion of God, let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has
                  taught us, each praying in our own language:
All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will
                  be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive
                  us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not
                  into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power,
                  and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
Amen.

Act of Spiritual Communion
Lord Jesus, we desire earnestly to experience your love as guests at the heavenly feast you have prepared for
your children on earth in the most holy Sacrament of the Altar. As we are not able on this day to be gathered
at your Table, may we receive you into our hearts by faith, trusting the word of your promise, that "those who
love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with
them." Strengthen our faith, increase our love and hope; and after this life grant us a place at your heavenly
table, where we shall eat of the eternal manna, and drink of the river of your pleasure forevermore. Hear us
for your own Name's sake. Amen.

                                                      6
Hymn Draw the Circle Wide Hymn 418

                                      Refrain:
                                      Draw the circle wide. Draw it wider still.
                                      Let this be our song, no one stand alone,
                                      standing side by side, draw the circle wide.

                    1 God the still point of the circle, round whom all creation turns;
                    nothing lost, but held forever, in God’s gracious arms.
                    2 Let our hearts touch far horizons, so encompass great and small;
                    let our loving know no borders, faithful to God’s call.
                    3 Let the dreams we dream be larger, than we’ve ever dreamed before;
                    let the dream of Christ be in us, open every door.

Closing Hymn We’ll Sing in the Morning Hymn 37

            1 We’ll sing in the morning a song of creation,
            of your breath that stirs up the waters to birth;
            and here at the fount of Christ’s mercy we join you,
            coheirs of heaven and stewards of your gracious earth.
            2 We’ll sing in the noon-time a song of redemption:
            how Naaman was cleansed in the flow of your grace;
            how, when we were sick, in our sin you released us
            to laugh in health and dance in love before your face.

            3 We’ll sing in the evening a song of your pastures,
            of rivers that gladden the city of God;
            and when we arrive on the bank of our Jordan,
            you’ll help us through its cold by fords your saints have trod.

Welcome to St. George’s. Thank you for worshipping with us today.
A warm welcome to all and a special welcome to those who are visiting this Sunday. The addition of your
praise and thanks heartens us all. If you are seeking a church home or simply a place to rest for a while
on your spiritual journey, we invite you to consider St. George’s to be that place. The service bulletin will
guide you through the liturgy. If you are new to St. George’s and wish to be included in our weekly e-
mails (St. George’s e-Touch), please send an email to the office – office@stg.church

2022 OFFERING ENVELOPES
Numbered offering envelopes have not been ordered for 2022 since most parishioners make their
offering online such as PAR, e-transfer, Canada Helps, or by mail. The demand for boxed envelopes does
not meet the minimum order requirements. Should you wish to make a contribution with an envelope,
our generic offertory envelopes are available for pick up outside the church office.
ST. MICHAELS MISSION
Ongoing food item - Cans of soup, men’s winter coats and jogging pants, gloves and underwear. Any
financial donations received by the Church will be gratefully used to purchase gloves and underwear.
Thank you for your generosity.

OFFICE HOURS
Please note that the church office will be closed from Saturday December 25 through Monday January
10, 2022 inclusive. As of Tuesday January 11, office hours will resume Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays
from 8:00 am – 12:00 pm. However, due to the government mandated work-at-home ruling, not all
mornings will be in person. In-person office hours will be on Fridays only while Tuesdays and Thursdays
will be work from home. Phone messages will be checked and returned regularly.

VESTRY REPORTS ARE DUE
Attention ministry leaders, including Outreach, Worship, Fellowship, Messy Church or other committee,
please submit a vestry report to the church office recapping the highlights of your year. Vestry reports
are due by January 21 at the latest.

COMMUNITY SUPPER
Our next meal is scheduled for Friday January 21. If you want to get involved, just let Lori or Rev. Steven
know of your interest and we will find a place for your talents.

FOOD CUPBOARD
The food cupboard continues and your donations of non-perishable goods are always warmly
appreciated. As you able, we need shelf-stable milk, hearty soups, canned meats and fish, juice, sugar,
and rice. Thank you for your ongoing generosity.
