DETERMINE YOUR RESEARCH CRITERIA

Geographic Focus Field of Interest Types of Support Amount
 When the U.S. government grants a private foundation tax-exempt
status, it expects the foundation to use its money to do good for society.
To make sure that happens, the government requires the foundation to
spend at least part of its assets each year for charitable purposes. That
rule is called the payout requirement.
FOUNDATIONS
 Foundations pay that amount in the form of qualifying
TYPICALLY GIVE distributions, most of which will be grants. Within certain limits, the
AWAY 5% OF administrative cost of making grants also qualifies. Generally, a private
THEIR ASSETS foundation must meet or exceed an annual payout requirement of five

ANNUALLY….. percent of the average market value of its net investment assets to
                     avoid paying taxes.
 If you're a nonprofit looking for funding, the payout requirement can
help you. By knowing how much a private foundation holds in assets,
you can roughly estimate how much it should pay in grants each year to
                     meet its payout requirement.
                                                                               -grantspace.org
HOW WILL FOUNDATIONS
CHANGE GIVING?

 During this ‘difficult time’/economic downturn,
foundation approaches to grantmaking have been as
diverse as grantmaking institutions themselves. Some
foundations have declared themselves open only to a
core group of existing grantees, with others have
declared a willingness to spend more than the 5%
minimum required payout, and some have closing up
shop. Determining a strategy has been a struggle for
foundations of all sizes and many are still undecided.
QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER WHEN CONDUCTING PROSPECT RESEARCH

 Does my program/project fall within the funders area of
                                 interest?

 Where will my program/project have an impact and what
                                 area do I serve?

 Does the average grant size fit my need?

 Will we be required to match the grant? If so, by what
                                 percentage?

 Are we confident we can ‘find the match’?

 Are funds paid upfront or is it a reimbursement grant?

 Grant funds can take 6-9 months to acquire. Will the
dollars come in time for our need?

 Are there restrictions? (i.e., faith based, no transport, etc.)
QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER RIGHT NOW TO DEMONSTRATE NEED

 Can you clearly demonstrate the key need(s) you are filling
                               in the community?

 Are you illustrating your value with compelling stories
relating the benefits those you serve receive?

 Are you highlighting how an investment will be impactful?

 Have you been able to adapt to the current circumstances
and still provide services to those you serve?

 What is the impact of COVID/social unrest/economic
                               downturn, etc. on your organization?

 Why do you need support now?

 Applications Now Closed for FY 2021 COVID-19 GRANT PROGRAM - At the April 15, 2020 board meeting, the CHEFA Board
of Directors approved the replacement of their typical three grant cycles (Client, Nonprofit, Targeted) for FY 2021 to respond to
the COVID-19 pandemic. The FY 2021 CHEFA COVID-19 Grant Program will focus on funding statewide efforts that are
currently, or plan to be, launched by 501 (c) (3) CT nonprofit entities within the next few months to respond to the crisis.
 NO FY 2021 CLIENT GRANT PROGRAM - There will NOT be a FY 2021 Client Grant cycle, this grant cycle has been replaced
with the FY 2021 CHEFA COVID-19 Grant cycle. CHEFA expects that we will resume a typical Client Grant cycle for FY 2022,
which we expect to open in July 2021. Please check the website for updates.
(Peter and Elizabeth Tower Foundation)
 In response to the unprecedented demands the COVID-19 pandemic has created for our existing grant partners and the
communities we serve, the Tower Foundation is canceling all grant cycles for the remainder of 2020. We are not taking
applications for any of our regular grant opportunities this April or August. Learn more here.
(Montgomery County, OH)
 Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Montgomery County has decided to cancel the Spring 2020 funding cycle of the Economic
Development/Government Equity (ED/GE) grant program. The ED/GE program is funded through sales tax revenue that will be
significantly impacted as a result of COVID-19.

 State Governments (US) - State government opportunities can be a little harder to track down. Some state-sponsored
opportunities will appear in funder databases, just like federally sponsored opportunities. As many state-based
opportunities are federally funded, you will find them posted in grants.gov. One of the most reliable routes to find state-
level opportunities is to visit the website of the state-level department that oversees your program area.

 Government Resources Outside of the US - Outside of the US, you can find grant listings through government websites
and the websites of regional and multinational organizations. Few governments maintain a resource like grants. gov,
which posts all government agency grants in a single location. If you live outside of the US and seek a grant for a project
based within your country, try visiting the website of the government agency that oversees the program or subject area
most closely related to the work of your organization.

 International Aid - Federal aid agencies fund the majority of international development work conducted around the
world. In the US, the lead agency for international aid is the US Agency for International Development (USAID)
https://www.usaid.gov/. USAID's grant opportunities are posted on grants.gov, and its contract opportunities are posted
on https://fbohome.sam.gov/. For forecasted opportunities (contracts and grants), there’s a very helpful database called
the USAID Business Forecast. (resource: www.peakproposals.com)
