Major General Harvey J. McCarter, 87 of Fairview, Texas, “flew west” on July 14th, 2021, with his wife and family by his
side.

General McCarter was born in Louisburg, Kansas on February 7, 1934, to Winford G. and Georgia E. McCarter. He
lived in Manhattan, Kansas from age 8 and attended Manhattan High School where he played multiple sports. He
graduated from Kansas State University in 1956 with a BS in Electrical Engineering, played baseball, was a member of
Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and KSU Air Force ROTC Detachment.

Upon graduation from KSU, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He entered
Active Duty in November 1956 and went to USAF Flight School, earning his wings in February 1958 at Vance Air Force
Base, Oklahoma. His Electrical Engineering degree helped win him an assignment as a Communications and
Electronics Officer at an Aircraft Control and Warning Direction Center in Alaska. Upon completion of the Alaska tour of
duty in 1959, he was released from active duty and began a career at Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, Kansas. In 1960, he
joined the Kansas Air National Guard at McConnell AFB, KS where he flew the T-33, F-86L, the F-100C and F-100F
combat aircraft concurrently with his civilian work.

After leaving Boeing, he went to work for Power Engineering in Sioux City, Iowa as a project engineer and became the
Chief Engineer on the first launch complex for the missions to land men on the moon located at Cape Kennedy, Florida.
He was very proud to be a part of the Apollo preparation. He transferred to the Iowa Air National Guard to continue flying
the F-100C.

In 1966, he became an airline pilot for Trans World Airlines. While training for the Boeing 727, he was invited to instruct
in the TWA Training Center for the next 4 years. He transferred to the Air Force Reserve in 1967 at Richards-Gebaur
AFB, MO. He advanced through the ranks serving as aircraft commander and instructor pilot on the C-124 and C-130.
He also served in various operations’ positions at Squadron and Wing levels of increasing significance before
becoming Vice Wing Commander.
During his military service between 1967 and 1982, he completed Air Command and Staff College, the Industrial
College of the Armed Forces, Air War College, and he also earned a Master of Business Management from Webster
University. He, then, spent a year at the Pentagon and three years as Vice Commander of the 14th Air Force Dobbins
AFB with command of all reserve airlift east of the Mississippi River (22,000 airmen and airwomen). He served two
years at the Military Airlift Command at Scott AFB, IL and finally 5 years again at the Pentagon as Mobilization Assistant
to the Deputy Chief of Staff for Plans and Operations where he was promoted to Major General in 1988. He retired from
  military service in 1993.

His TWA career progressed with a captain rating on the B-707, B-727, B-757/767 and instructor check airman on the B-
727 and B-767. In 1989 Harvey received the TWA Award of Excellence. In late 1990, he retired from TWA to accept a
four-year contract to fly the B747-300 for KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. His combined military, airline, and civilian flying time
  totals nearly 18,000 hours.

In retirement he was an active member of the McKinney Lions Club for nearly 20 years.

Harvey was married to Barbara Sondergard McCarter for 36 years. She passed away from diabetic complications in
May 1990. They had two sons, Steven W. married to LuAnne of Blue Ridge, Texas (two grandchildren, Zachary B. of
The Colony, Texas and Anna E. of Blue Ridge, Texas) and Jeffrey D. married to Kristi of Overland Park, Kansas. Harvey
married Angela Cody in 1991 and she passed away in 1995 from pancreatic cancer. From this marriage, he gained a
stepdaughter, Marisa married to David of Sherwood Oaks, California (step granddaughter, Natasha). In 2000, he
married Marilyn Barnes. From this marriage, he gained two stepdaughters, Cynthia married to Jim of Nunica, Michigan
(step grandchildren, Will of Tucson, Arizona and Ann of Nunica, Michigan) and Connie Weaver of Dallas, Texas. He
  loved them all dearly!

A great person and professional…
JOHN KEMPER, AUGUST 26, 2021

Fortunately, Harvey entered my life when I was only eleven by marrying my
sister…they were 21 & 20, but they were soon off to follow his Air Force and
career ventures toward great heights. His ambitions amazed me while I was
too young to even comprehend their complexity. Then the results they brought
him helped inspired me to explore my unknown abilities. He set examples of
how to behave in playing sports, how to gain rank in the Air Guard I also was
in, but mostly how to, by his constant endeavoring, keep studying to enhance
ones’ career, family lifestyle, friendships, personal development & projects; all
while serving community and country. I believe he set higher life-endurance
and achievement standards for everyone who knew him well. Luckily for me,
we kept in touch for 66 years and I will be conjuring memories the rest of my
life to try to learn more from the history of this highly contributive and self-
reliant citizen.
LYLE SONDERGARD, AUGUST 23, 2021

I had the privilege of getting to know Harvey thru my parents who lived two
doors down from his family in Fairview, TX. At the time, I was still in the Army
Reserves and heading overseas on my first deployment to Afghanistan. MG
McCarter had written a note with a challenge coin wishing me Godspeed on
my travels overseas. We shared a love for our country and both were patriotic
to the flag of the United States of America. I will miss him but I'm glad our
paths had crossed.... LTC Greg Taylor, U.S. Army (Ret.)

General McCarter was a fantastic person and role model for many. I always
looked forward to seeing him at events in McKinney and he was always
present and supportive at our Veteran's events each year. I was always
amazed at the humility he demonstrated as a person that was so accomplished
in life. His was a life well lived. With Sympathy for the family: Brian and Donna

I will miss this neighbor and friend who was an extremely kind and sincere
gentleman. He always greeted one with the most pleasant smile and seemed
interested in whatever you wanted to talk about. We have always felt so
fortunate to have him and Marilyn as neighbors along with the opportunity to
know about his many life interests and accomplishments. He was a great
friend! Cherished Memories, CarLa

Marilyn, our thoughts and prayers go out to you and the entire McCarter family
during this time of sadness.
PAT AND TOM CRAWFORD, JULY 20, 2021

My dear General, It was an honor for me meeting You when you entered KLM
flying the 747-300 in the years 1990-1994. It was a privilege too serving You
and the other Old Dogs during that period of time. You and your colleague-
pilots have always a special place in my heart. Now You flew away from us,
You shall remembered by me as a very nice fellow man. May You rest in
peace my dear friend.
PIER DE GROOT, JULY 20, 2021

Our deepest condolences to all of the the McCarter family. Harvey was more
than a friend to both of us since we first met in 1974 at Richards-Gebaur AFB.
Harvey was the aircraft commander on my first cross country in the C-130s. As
a 2nd Lt I got to watch him "receive" a 5 day instrument check-ride. We got to
"transport" cobalt radiated screw fly larva from Mcallen, Texas, to San Juan,
Puerto Rico. We had to keep the airplane as close to freezing as possible
without us freezing so the whole crew wore parkas for 8 hours. Needless to
say, it was a VERY memorable trip to start my flying career and Harvey Joe
made it even more memorable by guiding me through his check ride so that I
didn't screw it up for him. We all loved Harvey Joe, he was a great pilot,
exceptional leader, a wonderful friend and most of all a really nice guy. Linda
and I will miss him.
LINDA AND TERRY EDWARDS, JULY 19, 2021

So very sorry to hear of the passing of your father. I have lots of fond
memories of you and I with him.
JEFF AND KIM WALTON, JULY 19, 2021

To Harvey and Family It has been a distinct pleasure to have known Harvey.
He was a friend, a brother in Christ and a genuinely good man. He lived an
active and productive life as his accomplishments would attest. He will be
missed by many. "Well done good and faithful servant".
GARY WYDMAN, JULY 19, 2021

To Harvey's Family, We are so very sorry for your loss! Esther (Ikenberry) was
a classmate of Harvey's at Manhattan KS H.S. and enjoyed his friendly
manner and humor. The last time she saw Harvey is when he visited the
Sondergards in the Cedar's Village Retirement Center. We know he loved his
family dearly and was a very caring and patriotic man who made a difference.
We know he will be sorely missed. We will be thinking of you on July 20th. Our
Deepest Sympathy, Esther and Dean Cotton PS: We are now in Skilled
Nursing care at Cedar's House 805 N. Maxwell St McPherson KS 67460 for a
year after moving from Assist. Liv. where we lived for 3 years after being in the
Cedars Village for over 22 years.
