This Photo: Encanto is in good hands. Ace Hawkins Else Schauman, former resident bought the house, sight unseen on of 83 W. Encanto September 18, 2019, having searched, bid on, from 1940 to and lost out on several Willo houses in the 1992; Inset: Bungalow floor preceding months. One of the key reasons plans she wanted to be in Willo was because she heard it was a great place to socialize and get to know a broad cross-section of one’s neighbors. She got to work restoring her old house, met her immediate neighbors on the 100 block of Encanto, and took in the first few Neighborhood Happy Hours. Then everything shut down for over a year. Now, she is ready to meet and greet again. The house that was the previous home of Chris Bianco of Pizza Bianco fame came with some authentic Italian cookery tools and a massive, beautifully weathered table. Ace has placed that table in the living room, which now has become a perfect dining space. Mr. Bianco’s ex-wife had lived in the house for 25 years and collected lots of eclectic pieces, many of which stayed with the house. The home is a Craftsman Bungalow with the distinctive massive river rock pillars supporting the spacious front porch. A lone artist’s sculpture of the bust of a woman rests next to the front door, an homage to the longest inhabitant of the house, Else Schauman, who lived there from 1940-1992. There is a peculiar historical snippet inside the built-in hallway storage area, which describes Else as “German artist, traveler, (Contintued on Page 23) W I L LO P H X .C O M I N S I D E W I L L O / 21
