The Directory of Hospitals
A national network of selected hospitals
As a PHC customer, you have access to a national network of hospitals, day-patient
units, scanning centres and other private healthcare facilities. These have been
selected following a comprehensive assessment of their quality, value and range
of services. All of them are listed in the Directory of Hospitals.
General information
Oral surgery
If you require an oral surgery procedure, benefit will be provided for those oral
surgical procedures as set out in your Handbook, when your dentist refers you
directly to a facility indicated by the OS symbol in the Directory of Hospitals.
Please contact our claims line before treatment.
Cataract surgery
If you require an eye operation involving cataract surgery, then benefit will be
provided when your general practitioner refers you directly to one of the facilities
indicated by the CS symbol in the Directory of Hospitals.

The quality assessment and improvement programme

The initial assessment covers most aspects of the hospital’s services. Hospitals and
other facilities for inclusion in our network are selected if they meet our strict quality
criteria.
In turn, every commitment is made to support the hospitals included in the network,
encouraging them to invest in new facilities and services – for mutual long-term
benefit.
They are regularly monitored on their performance to assess their quality of care,
which is why your feedback is particularly important.
If you should need to use a facility, please complete your hospital’s patient
satisfaction survey form and return it to them.
Standards for specialised services
Work is closely done with network hospitals that provide certain specialised care
services such as cancer, cardiac revascularisation, critical care, paediatrics and
psychiatric care. National guidelines for these have been established in conjunction
with appropriate professional authorities and organisations.The benefits of network hospitals
Being treated in advanced medical facilities in a supportive, professional environment can play an
important role in helping patients to recover. The hospitals included in the Directory of Hospitals will
endeavour to make your stay as pleasant and comfortable as possible.
You can usually have your own private room with en-suite bathroom, television and telephone. You
will be given a choice of dishes for each course at mealtimes and your visitors may, within reason,
come and go as they wish.
Be sure to call us first
To check whether you are covered, please call before you start treatment. Your claim will then be
authorised in advance – as described in the section ‘Making a claim’ in your Handbook. There may be
rare occasions when there is a need to suspend the use of a network hospital or another facility listed in
our Directory of Hospitals to protect the interest of our members. In such an event you will be informed
of this when you call us to register your claim.
Day-patient treatment
Advances in medical care mean that many operations are now undertaken on a day-patient basis. This
is in keeping with good clinical practice. Please note that you may be cared for in an open day ward
(rather than a single room) while you recover from an anaesthetic to enable nursing staff to monitor
your progress more effectively. Most hospitals now offer day-patient treatment and in a number of
purpose-built day-patient units which have been included in the Directory of Hospitals.

list of the hospitals, scanning centres and other facilities with one or more symbols shown against the
name of each facility listed. Each entry shows the medical service available, arranged alphabetically
by town and ordered in reference to the eleven areas shown on the map. If you have any questions,

OS Oral surgery arrangment in place
CS Cataract surgery arrangement in place
A triangle indicates an NHS hospital that does not have dedicated private patient facilities.
(We will recognise an NHS bed nominated as a private bed but in such cases the level of
accommodation may be the same as standard NHS accommodation.)
Scanning centres - these centres provide:
M MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)
C CT (computerised tomography)
P PET (positron emission tomography)
These are usually carried out on an out-patient basis. Only the centres listed can be used for
out-patient scanning
G General hospitals - acute medical and surgical hospitals and day-patient units which are
recommended by our insurer’s following their selection process and where you will receive a full
refund for hospital treatment
Ps Psychiatric hospitals - hospitals that specialise in the treatment of psychiatric illnesses

There are a number of hospitals that can only be used by those members that have selected to have
the London Upgrade option added to their policy.
If you do not have the London Upgrade option included on your policy, treatment including
in-patient, day-patient, out-patient and diagnostic tests at the following hospitals is excluded:
