March 22 - May 20, 2021
Dubai, UAE
A solo exhibition of monumental artworks by
international sculptor Helidon Xhixha
exhibited at Firetti Contemporary
01FORWARD
With the exhibition IMPRINT, Firetti Contemporary embraces the central place that art can
play in climate change, education and engagement. Providing a greater depth of learning
through the arts and humanities while inspiring meaningful climate action.
While highlighting social and environmental issues, our gallery's mission is to become a
vehicle for social change instilling values in our society through the inspirational power of art.
Opening our first exhibition with a focus on what is considered the greatest threat to humani-
ty, Helidon Xhixha's large-scale stainless-steel sculptures are surely a powerful statement on
climate change. His sculpture ICEBERG is an astounding manifesto in support of the
awareness of Global Warming and the melting of polar glaciers.
Xhixha has done his part, creating art that uses its beauty to incite positive dialogues on
issues that need to be addressed. As we all contribute to global warming through the cumu-
lative impact of our actions and consumption patterns, it is now up to us, the audience, to
make sure the message reaches as far as possible and inspires as many as
possible. Art needs its audience to invigorate change.
- Mara Firetti
04eing thrilled is an understatement when it comes to being part of the Firetti ontemporary
pro ect - the allery goes beyond ust being an exhibition space but rather, a platform to
drive and foster change. epresenting both emerging and established artists that draw
attention to social and environmental issues is something rewarding to be a part of.
IMPRINT places emphasis on the fact that action has to be ta en toward an issue we
collectively face lobal arming. hrough this exhibition we highlight Art's vital role in
bringing about progress and awareness of pressing matters within today's world.
e, as a allery and as individuals, strongly believe that our behaviour towards the
environment re uires more care and attention, as it impacts each and every one of our
lives, more importantly future generations.
- eline A em
ocial and environmental issues are the core mission of Firetti ontemporary. Art can help
educate and create awareness on such issues, leading the viewer to re ect, engage and act.
e are at a time where it is crucial to experience these topics in di erent creative outlets and
not ust on the news, to understand and react. For a better future. For our children.
IMPRINT by Helidon Xhixha is Firetti ontemporary s first opening exhibition. he exhibition
expresses the importance of climate change, the e ects it has on global warming and the
melting of polar ice caps.
or ing alongside li e-minded individuals in the development of the gallery as well as the
production of the exhibition has been a satisfying and rewarding experience, as we believe
that we can collectively learn, grow and pay more attention to the issue and help ma e a
change.

06INTRODUCTION TO ICEBERG
An artist whose sculptural practice has gone from strength to strength Helidon Xhixha s
ICBERG installations convey the intense sense of wonder that characteri e his outloo and
attitude towards art.
ith an approach that is the result of an artistic upbringing, a formal education and the
artist s own instinctive, creative drive, Xhixha presents us with a grand spectacle Art which
challenges its audience. ot simply through its sheer scale and mass but through its
engagement with ideas of fundamental importance.
he oating ICBERG installation by Helidon Xhixha was first exhibited in the middle of the
enetian lagoon in occasion of the th enice iennale in . A four-meter-high stain-
less-steel sculpture, captivated audiences, garnering much attention from industry profes-
sionals and the media ali e as it oated through the anal rande and the enetian lagoon.
his outstanding re ective sculpture made a statement for global warming and the potential
impact it could have on a place such as enice in the near future.

ICEBERG IN THE GULF
A massive, irregular bloc of stainless steel, measuring x cm, whose form has been
perfectly welded and waterproofed, is structured to oat on water in such a way that it
follows the movement of the currents and wind, allowing for a continuous variation of
luminous pro ections that the mirrored steel produces.
e can imagine this oating metal bloc as an actual small iceberg that has detached itself
from an icecap and, oating astray, arrived in the ersian ulf. he view is shoc ing and
aesthetically fascinating, but also clearly represents an alarming ecological warning.
he A is classified among the categories of countries with highest rate of vulnerability to
the potential impacts of climate change in the world, resulting in warmer weather, less
precipitations and higher sea levels. he A recogni es the global responsibility it is
committed to and has integrated climate change measures into national policies, strategies
and planning.
he installation stands in support of the engagement of the country in its fight against this
disastrous phenomenon for the well-being of future generations.
An ob ection could be made that the sculpture s medium, having come from an industrial
process that contributes to lobal arming means an obvious contradiction occurs,
between the symbolic purpose and material nature of the artwor . uch a contradiction is
unavoidable - the art world is part of our reality and so re ects the contradictions of
every-day life. his is a point that creates a truly problematic and culturally significant
tension.
hese aspects are common in numerous artwor s. More specifically, the fact that a monu-
mental steel sculpture has been made to oat and move, in contrary to its heavy weight and
usual static nature, is almost ironic and contradictory in itself and invites us to re ect on the
most experimental practices of sculptural expression.

15EARTH
Parallel to the environmental message, EARTH provokes thoughts on the impact of climate
change, a global problem that will a ect every individual on each of the seven continents of
the world. he installation EARTH works in conjunction with ICEBERG, acting as its terrestrial
counterpoint, and memoriali es the continued damage we in ict upon the planet.
ustainability is the operating system of our shared EARTH. f the operating system collapses,
all the programs that depend on it , economic, social, political and other system, will crash
with it. ts all connected.
t is without a doubt that the vision re uired to reali e such great artwor s is the hallmar of
a great artist and with the completion of these wor s, Helidon Xhixha oins the long,
prestigious tradition of public, environmental art.
sing innovative techni ues developed over the course of his career, Helidon creates
sculptures that captivate with their beauty.
t is not enough for art to be driven exclusively by strong concepts central to contemporary
art is the communication of ideas. he fascinating aesthetics of ICEBERG and EARTH all serve
to communicate its meaning without them it would not engage its viewers and its
ecological message would be lost.

BIOGRAPHY
Helidon Xhixha b. has, in recent decades, a rmed his position as a leading figure in
today s contemporary art scene, with his wor going on to receive much critical success on
an international platform. pon discussing Xhixha s iconic stainless-steel sculptures, the
prominent talian art critic uca eatrice is uoted as calling the artist one of the most inter-
esting sculptors in the contemporary scene . urrently based in Milan and ubai, Xhixha
holds a prestigious role in the international art scene sharing his innovative vision and
techni ue through monumental examples of public art and redefining the relationship
between a sculpture and its environment.
Having inherited a passion for the arts from his father, Helidon Xhixha too the decision to
study in taly, where he was able to develop his techni ue whilst at Milan s prestigious rera
Art Academy. n the artist was awarded a scholarship to attended ondon s ingston
niversity where he was given the opportunity to wor with new materials, including stain-
less steel, that would go on to become the signature medium through which he would lay
down his artistic legacy over a -year period. hroughout his artistic tra ectory, Xhixha s
three-dimensional stainless-steel sculptures have shed light upon the inherent relationship
between the artwor and its surrounding environment. As famously stated by Xhixha,
don t sculpt materials rather use materials to sculpt light.
ver since his academic years, Helidon Xhixha has been commissioned to design wor s in
various countries across urope, atin America, the Middle ast and the nited tates.
39n Helidon Xhixha s symbolism and artistry was famously included during the th
enice iennale representing the yrian pavilion. Helidon Xhixha s oating installation
ICEBERG, a four-meter-high stainless-steel sculpture, captivated audiences, garnering much
attention from industry professionals and the media ali e as it oated through the anal
rande and the enetian lagoon. his outstanding re ective sculpture made a statement for
global warming and the potential impact it could have on a place such as enice in
the near future.
oon after, Helidon Xhixha exhibited a contemporary response to eonardo a inci s ast
upper titled verlasting at Milan-Malpensa Airport. welve pillars made of polished
stainless steel stood before twelve panels depicting e er painting. ach
stainless-steel column designed to represents one of the twelve apostles standing firmly in
place around the largest, central figure, esus hrist, in perfect symmetry. ontrasting these
slic ob ects, Xhixha has created a column made of dull, browned orten steel to depict
udas, the traitor. A uxtaposition of materials highlights the themes of good versus evil,
eminent notions within da inci s masterpiece. Featured in such a prominent exhibition
space the installation was viewed by some million passing spectators.
n Xhixha s success from the previous year led him to present a ma or solo exhibition
entitled hining roc in the historical town of ietrasanta on the coast of orthern uscany.
he artwor s were designed and placed across the town to accentuate ietrasanta s beauty
and rich history.

he re ective nature of the wor drew over , visitors during a period of months, who
travelled to admire the visually stri ing sculptures made using marbles - coming from the
ervaiole uarry, Monte Altissimo - bron e and stainless steel. y paying homage the
famous history and tradition of marble sculpting in the area, Helidon Xhixha not only made
wor s that were relevant to their setting, but he presented a shift in his practice where he
moved beyond the use of stainless steel and into the realms of exploring materials ta en
directly from the arth.
uring the same year Helidon Xhixha was given the ublic Medal Award for est nstallation
at the first ever ondon esign iennale. he event at omerset House exhibited Xhixha s
installation titled liss in the central forecourt, the most prominent location in omerset
House. ithin this exhibition, that included wor s coming from di erent countries
inspired by the theme of topia, the public had the opportunity to interact, sociali e and
self-re ect with his sculpture. his installation was sought to blur the line between art and
design in order to create a stimulating and progressive experience of lato s concept of
topia as an individual and a community in an ideal city.
he summer of , Helidon Xhixha, invited in person by the irector of the i alleries,
i e chmidt, unveils a ma or new exhibition set within the stunning scenery of the oboli
arden s in Florence. For this exhibition the artist has sought to explore the deeply complex
themes of haos and Order, by ta ing inspiration from nature and sacred geometry. he
exhibition can be understood as being split into two separate sections, where a clearly
discernible di erence between the worlds of chaos and order are apparent. n the imonaia
of the oboli arden s the artist has loo ed to nature in order to discover haos. y ta ing
inspiration from the crystal caves of aica, Mexico, Xhixha has designed a complex response
to the seemingly random selenite formations.

44
For the artist s response to Order, monumental structures have been placed in prominent
outdoor locations around the oboli ardens, inspired by sacred geometric principles,
whose roots are again found in nature. erhaps most stri ing of all are the large-scale sculp-
tures placed in front of the ala o itti Conoscenza and n nit . ituated at either side of
the palace entrance, these wor s display intricate levels of geometric regularity that instantly
capture the viewer s attention.
n , two ma or open-air exhibitions, Rifle i i ce, curated by i e chmidt, presenting
twenty monumental sculptures throughout the city of ugano and tee n t ne, held in
the city of Forte dei Marmi, featuring a series of monumental sculptures by Helidon Xhixha
made in stainless steel and marble.
On invitation by the ational nstitute of ontemporary Art, Helidon Xhixha installs nine
monumental sculptures in the historic city center of asale Monferrato in a solo Open-Air
exhibition entitled e Ri en e . he exhibition held from October to February
is curated by Anselmo illata.
n ecember , ce rin cit i eni i curated by lodian ed a, witnesses six
monumental installations placed at the Arsenale of enice in occasion of an exhibition
evo ing rebirth and reawa ening after the global pandemic.
Xhixha embraces the role of the monument not only as a solid, physical ob ect but also as a
re ection and abstraction of our external environment. His artistic tra ectory has redefined
the boundaries of contemporary sculpting and will continue to reshape our vision in the
coming years.
