HERE WE BELONG, ITS 2020
HERE WE BELONG:
TO THE COMMUNITY, TO CREATIVITY, TO HUMANITY

ITS ANNOUNCES THIS YEAR’S 35 FINALISTS:
OVER 600 PROJECTS FROM 60 COUNTRIES.
THE EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO OCTOBER 2020.

Regeneration, circularity and creative responsibility:
sustainability in all its forms is the key trend.

This is a dark hour. Over the past few months our lives have been unimaginably turned upside down. While we try to
understand how and why, one thing for sure is that we can and we will come through these troubled times, renewed
and regenerated.

Now more than ever, we feel we belong: this year’s chosen theme, Here We Belong, is this year’s theme. Somewhat
foretelling and taking on heartfelt meaning of belonging, origin and culture, to be a part of our community and above
all humanity.

Now more than ever, this community is demonstrating its commitment, its resilience, its sense of belonging. And the
creativity which motivates and inspires it is a fundamental key to open up the treasure chest of our future. Although
we are unable to run ITS 2020 as customary, in July, and Eve have postponed it to October 23, our community is
working relentlessly, supported, as usual, by the institutions, the territory and all the partners that have never
ceased to back us up.

Physical distancing is upsetting, but it inspires us to fill this void. In the last few weeks we have received, registered
and examined over 600 portfolios from more than 60 nations. ITS Pre-selections took place via digital meetings,
keeping up unshakable enthusiasm, reinforced by the awareness that guiding, giving voice to and promoting new
generations of creative talents will prove to be of even greater value in the post-pandemic period.

“Today everything that represents continuity and security for us, acquires new value and meaning – says Barbara
Franchin, founder and director of ITS, recently cited by Forbes as one of Italy’s 100 most influential women – The
collaboration and support from the territory and our partners, as well as the extraordinary resilience shown by the ITS
team and by all the talents who decided to take part in this 2020 edition, brings a deeper meaning and impact to our
project and to each one of us. Every portfolio received is a like a seed of resilience, the will to regenerate, the hope for a
different future to be conceived and created together”.

This 2020 edition Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia, Promoturismo FVG, Municipality of Trieste and Fondazione
CRTrieste continues support, as does backing from Autorità di Sistema Portuale del Mare Adriatico Orientale,
Fondazione Friuli and Fondazione CariGo. They are International Talent Support’s travel companions and have deep
seated values, not only for the project’s institutional importance, but also for its roots, firmly planted in the territory:
‘here we belong.
PRESS RELEASE - MAY 2020 2/6

“As common denominators of a new way of living, yet definitely not less strongly shared, responsibility and
generosity have guided the steps of our community along endless weeks of concerned quietness. The desire to
express ourselves, to meet, to get to know each other again resonates, however, with increasingly greater strength
in the soul of all of us, who are gazing into the horizon with trust and impatience. This is why, therefore, we are
confirming the 2020 edition of ITS, an appointment that for almost two decades has been a part of the Friuli Venezia
Giulia calendar of events, and that symbolizes, much more than a simple piece of good news, a milestone along the
path towards a newly found everyday life.”
Massimiliano Fedriga, President of Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia

SUSTAINABILITY - TRENDS REPORT
This year’s trends range from mix & match - creative and disruptive excessiveness that is typical of young
creative/designer generation’s expression, where gender has no limits or boundaries, and fluidity seems to be
the established non-rule – to pure essential clean lines in which just a few details burst out. An inner beauty that
manifests itself, being rather than just appearing. An inner beauty that cannot be restrained, no longer content with
just appearing it needs to shine.

It is sustainability in all its forms – environmental, social and in its deeper human sense– widespread, a fil rouge
visible in trends and choices made. It unravels along different paths – up-cycling, re-cycling, zero-waste, natural
colours and dyeing, organic textiles – like a recurring element: research and the reuse of objects and materials that
young creative talents have sourced from their surroundings or have gone looking for. Objects and materials that
come with a story, that through this regeneration breaths new meaning into them.

In 2016 sustainability was first embraced by ITS. It now returns with an increasingly central role and relevance: a
true inescapable necessity, as the crisis we are now facing, unmistakably finds its deepest origin in the sense of
omnipotence and dominance together with Man’s lack of respect for Nature. Four years on, what does Sustainability
mean for young ITS creatives? How has its perception and concrete application evolved for young generations of
fashion and design? We can find some answers in our 2016 report. Back then key references were brands strongly
committed to social and environmental issues, but the line separating their statements and their true actions was
blurred – in 2020 sustainability is seen as an individual and collective civic duty, where everyone plays a part with
their everyday commitment. This is the era of sustainability 2.0, in which the actors are single individuals, and one’s
measurable effort is what really counts. A deep awareness of the urgency that this means should bring respect to
those who act with integrity.

ITS ARCADEMY
Sustainability in all its incarnations – economic, social, environmental – will also be part of the backbone of the
new ITS ARCADEMY project, presented in 2019 and to launch in 2021. A dream in the making: part archive, part ark
and part academia. It will be an open space to exchange knowledge and creative ideas, a fundamental evolution of
the journey into 360° creativity that the platform created since day one by Barbara Franchin. Born out of the unique
heritage from the ITS Creative Archive (an ever-expanding collection comprising 18,000 portfolios, over 240 outfits,
over 200 accessories and jewelry pieces, 700+ photographs). ITS ARCADEMY will be a meeting point for interchange
and interaction with innovators, fashion industry insiders, academics and visionary talents, but also for education,
open to the general public. Trans-generational, trans-social and trans-cultural, ITS Arcademy will have circularity
as a mainstay: the former finalists, jurors and all of the ITS global network will have an active role in the creation
of what aims to be a new home to creativity, arts and culture. ITS Arcademy will offer a varied calendar of special

events and educational initiatives, from those addressed to simple aficionados to those tailor made for professionals
and companies, there will be special programs dedicated to people of all ages and levels of expertise. Children and
grown-ups, local territory and the world will be interacting together.

THE JURY
The pre-selections of the ITS 2020 finalists were carried out online. The digital portfolios were submitted in the
