LARP (Live Action Role Playing) was an activity we played around with a lot this summer. Basically campers become
characters in a world and begin to battle monster, go on quests, or just speak in fun accents. Using Lord of the Rings
is a simple way to build buy in with kids and keep campers and staff on the same page. We have also run Skyrim,
Dungeons and Dragons, and other LARP events as well.

INTRO: Gandolf arrives in full costume proclaiming that the Nazgul, ring wraiths, have been raiding the near by
towns. Gandolf needs to gather a party of heroes to throw them back, but first we must build our characters.
                                                                                                                         SUPPLIES
CHARACTER BUILDING: One of the best parts about LARPing is giving the campers a chance to create their own - Blue and Red Paint
characters. We ask them to make some simple choices. - Blue and Red Costumes
1) Name Their Character - Battle Supplies (boffer swords or fun noodles or
2) Choose their costume water balloons or sponges)
We opened our costume closet and allowed campers to choose costumes. Many dressing like knights or wizards and - Christmas Lights
loved pretending. The addition of the costumes added a huge amount to the immersive aspect of the game. - Sheets
1) Choose their race (these races don’t effect battles but are fun for campers to think about) - Walk in Freezer
Elves: Elves are fast, have extremely great balance, and love nature - Cardboard
Dwarfs: Are short stocky and extremely strong. They are great miners and love metals.
Humans: Humans have a great understanding of the realm and are well liked by all. They have the
best ability to learn magic Standard Swords Rules
Hobbits: Hobbits are short, quick, and smart. They make great thief’s and can learn to sneak and steal. - If you are hit in the torso once you are defeated.
4) All Campers Received Swords or Fun Noodles as swords. - If you are hit in the arm or leg you lose that arm

on one leg, or go to one knee).
                                                                                                                         - If you are hit in both arms, both legs, or an arm and

THE QUEST: The quest is basically lead by one counselor dressed as Gandalf and a couple LITs/CITs dressed as
warriors and all the bad guys run by another counselor or two and the rest of the LITs/CITS. The bad guys know the
locations of the battles and after each one they move to the next location.

We must find the Nazguls secret lair and defeat them. First we must go to the orc campsite where the Nazgul were
last seen. At this site the orcs are sitting around a fire pit grunting. Gandalf’s party must defeat the orcs and inter-
rogate their leader to find their way to the next step. In practice this looks like a standard sword battle with each
orc having 3 lives and the leader having 5. The leader makes certain to be the last orc to be hit. Then he reveals the
location to the Nazgul Layer.

The Nazgul Layer was inside an old barn we had onsite, but could be anything that has a door. At the entrance to the
layer the door is locked but a druid is tied up and guarded by trolls (trolls take 10 hits to kill). Gandalf explains when
they see the druid what to do. They must get 5 or so party members to touch the druid which will break the magic
chains and allow her to banish the trolls who will enter the Nazgul layer. Finally the druid will teach the party the
secret password to the door. (Speak Enter to Open) Enter is the password.
Inside the Nazgul layer are the Nazgul who are the final bosses, there are 2 Nazgul (Nazgul have 20 lives) and the
other bad guys are orcs. Once all the Nazgul are defeated Gandalf declares victory!

Being a Bad Guy Being the Druid
As a bad guy you will change roles at each battle. As a bad guy your role is to make the quest fun for the kids As the druid you will be a bad guy during the orc
not to worry about specific uses of spells or powers. If a kid says he has brute strength and can kill you in one battle and at the entrance to the Nazgul layer
hit, he can unless it negatively impacts another camper. If you are not one of the leaders in each battle the trick change costumes quickly and pretend tie yourself
is engage campers in a way that makes them feel good about defeating you and then to die. As a leader at each up. Finally you will listen to what Gandalf says
battle, orc leader, or Nazgul the key is to be the last bad guys alive and not worry about how many lives you about the number of campers that must touch you
have just to make it fun for the kids and be the last to die. to free you. When you are freed you banish the trolls
and teach the campers the password. In the final

The key is to explain what must be done at each
location before the battles occur. Gandalf also must

                                                 from monsters.
                                                 Lute
Each time a monster is killed they may or may not
have lute to give to the party. Lute can be anything
from small trinkets, shields, jewelry, costuming ect.
Each piece of lute provides some magical power to
the wearer. Some examples are The ring of water
which allows the first two hits to pass through the

to yell speed and run away from all bad guys, the
leaf crown of health which allows you to heal the
wounds of other party members. The bad guys
