A Spectacular Evening at Lucas Estate
More than 370 guests filled Lucas Estate to celebrate
the Home’s 100th Anniversary on August 20, 2015.
The gala was part of a year-long celebration marking
100 years of service to children and families in Indiana.
Highlights of the evening included a performance
by Grammy award winning artist, Sandi Patty, and
the premiere of a 32-minute film featuring moving
testimonials from some of our former residents. Julia
Moffitt, morning anchor on WTHR, served as Mistress
of Ceremonies.
Merrill Lynch Bank of America Corporation - The
Searles Akers Group was the presenting sponsor and
the Home remains eternally grateful for their support.
The 100th Anniversary Gala was held at the Lucas Estate in Carmel.
Julia Moffitt, morning anchor for WTHR, served as Mistress
of Ceremonies. Julia’s hometown is Lebanon.
Sandi Patty was gracious with her time during a V.I.P. reception with
guests. Valerie Erskine, member of the 100th Anniversary Committee,
along with her mother, Marjorie enjoyed meeting the Grammy award
winning artist.

Director of Residential Services. As alumnus Vicki Gans stated, “We are like one big
happy family. We all have so much in common and will forever love the Children’s Home and the wonderful staff.”
Some of the alumni in attendance were also highlighted in the 100th Anniversary Gala film which featured their
testimonials. The film is both inspirational and informative and would be appropriate for any of your Sunday
school classes or UMW/UMM meetings. For a complimentary copy of the DVD, contact Susan Bennett, Director

Honoring Tom Temple All of our group homes are named in honor of someone special.
Wesley is named after John Wesley, founder of the Methodist
Church. Godwin is named after the Home’s founder, Miss Angie
Godwin, and Coons is named after Mrs. Julietta Coons, former
administrator.
Temple Home for boys is named after Thomas G. Temple, retired
Director of Residential Services. Tom was hired as the Home’s first
Master level social worker in 1964. He retired from the Home in
1998.
A dedication service led by Rev. Jared Kendall, minister of
Otterbein UMC, Lebanon, was held in Tom’s honor with more
than 60 people in attendance. A special plaque was presented
to Tom along with a special memento made by the boys. “Tom
made a positive difference in the lives of hundreds of children.
We are so pleased to be able to continue to honor his lasting
legacy,” stated Rich Lapinski, Executive Director.
Rich Lapinski, Executive Director, congratulates Tom Temple during the building

The new state-of-the-art school was recently
dedicated at Indiana United Methodist Children’s
Home. A dedication service, led by our Trustee, Rev.
Marsha Hutchinson, was held with more than 130
people in attendance. During the service, Dr. James
E. Davis, the building’s namesake, was recognized
for his outstanding service as the Home’s Executive
Director from 1964 to 1995.
William Sigman, facilities chair and eighteen-year
board member stated, “The new school needed to
meet three important criteria; safety for the children,
energy efficiency and it had to be beautiful.“ The
school features a cafe, gymnasium/multi-purpose
room, library, outdoor plaza, seven classrooms
featuring the latest technology, six therapeutic
offices for counselors and a student commons.
We welcome individuals and groups to tour the
school. Tours may be scheduled by contacting Susan
Bennett, Director of Public Relations.
Angie Brown, Dean of Students, made a presentation to
Dr. James E. Davis during the school dedication.

Higher Grounds
Nick and Lou Ann Weyer serve as the Spiritual Life Leaders at the
Home. In February, they began facilitating weekly Sunday evening
services in Gress Chapel. “It’s an honor to serve the Home in this
capacity,” said Nick.
The chapel classroom has been transformed into a youth room/coffee
house called Higher Grounds. According to Nick, “The room is a nice
place for our youth and staff to gather for fellowship, prayer and Bible
study. We welcome any visitors to sit down and have a cup of coffee
with us, too.”
The beautiful chapel, built in 1987, is also scheduled for interior
renovations. If you would like to make a gift toward the chapel
renovation or spiritual development program, please contact Suzanne

A Peaceful Walk on the
Labyrinth
The Home’s 17-acre campus features a labyrinth,
thanks to a grant through Lowe’s of Zionsville.
Jody Lashbrook, therapist at the Home, had a
vision to create a peaceful place for the girls and
boys to cope with stress.
“A labyrinth walk can encompass a time for prayer,
reflection and joy. The majority of our youth are
diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder so
walking the labyrinth is an ideal way to help youth
cope with stressful days,” added Jody.
The Home would like to thank Lowe’s and other
staff and volunteers for making the labyrinth Jody Lashbrook finds the labyrinth to be a therapeutic setting
possible. for counseling sessions.Indiana United Methodist

School Store
The purpose of the on-grounds school store is to
help emphasize the importance of being responsible.
Students participate in the points program which
allows them to shop in the school store. Points are
based on behavior and attitude in the classroom,
giving students an opportunity to “cash in” on being
good students. They manage their points in an

account similar to a checking account. Through this
program, the students learn about banking, savings
