Dear Rising 6th Grade Families,
We are so excited to welcome you and your rising 6th grader to HMS! The staff members at Hopewell
work extremely hard each and every day to make our 6th graders feel welcome and be successful right
from the start.
One of the most important activities your child will participate in is something we call “WEB.” “WEB”
stands for Where Everybody Belongs, and we have developed a terrific orientation program to help our
6th graders become acclimated quickly to the Middle School experience, and then we strive to continue
to support them throughout their first year here.
Another exciting part of a 6th grader’s experience at Hopewell is getting to know the students from all
the different Elementary Schools that feed into HMS. We have students from Alpharetta, Birmingham
Falls, Cogburn Woods, Manning Oaks, and Summit Hill, as well as all the students who come to us from
other schools, both within and outside of Fulton County. This is always an exciting part of the first year
of Middle School for our students.
Aside from the traditional “core” classes, we offer numerous Connections courses. These courses
provide students with an opportunity to pursue areas of interest, like band, chorus, and orchestra, and
experience other courses that they may or may not realize they enjoy and have a special talent in, like
Art, Debate, and Computer Science to name a few. We also provide students with the opportunity to
participate in several extra-curricular clubs and activities, or even start one of they have an interest and
can find others with the same interest.
For the parents, we would first encourage everyone to join the HMS PTA. If you are interested in
volunteering, there are several opportunities to lead or contribute to projects sponsored by the PTA.
There are also volunteer opportunities inside the school, and as part of the Fulton County School Charter
System, we have a fully functioning and active School Governance Council that will add new parent and
community members each year.
We are proud of our school and the opportunities it provides for our students, and we are excited to
welcome you to the Hopewell family! Please don’t hesitate to let us know how we can help you and
your child make a successful transition to Middle School.
Sincerely,
Michael R. LeMoyne

On the pride matrix, students can clearly see the positive behaviors we expect in every area of the school. Students who display the qualities of Personal Responsibility, Respect, Integrity, making the Decision to be Safe, and Excellence are rewarded for their good behavior. PBIS Rewards is an on-line system we use to recognize our students when they exhibit positive behavior. Students are awarded “PRIDE Points” during class and can exchange their points for items or participation in events. We also have the Mustang PRIDE Mart (school store) that operates Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
W.E.B. W.E.B. stands for “Where Everybody Belongs.” It is a middle school orientation and transition program designed to help sixth graders connect with the school before sixth grade even begins. The move to middle comes with significant changes, and the W.E.B. program can address this in multiple ways. WEB was put on hold these last few years while we navigated COVID-19. However, we plan to bring a simplified WEB program back for the 2022-2023 school year. Our hope is to have WEB Leaders push-in to at least one academic period as well as homeroom. The goal of a WEB Leader is to check in with students regularly throughout the year during formal and informal W.E.B. and school events, acting as a friend, leader, and mentor. It has been shown that when students feel a connection to their school, they are more successful, and they are less likely to become victims of bullying. We hope to have a WEB orientation assembly on the 1st day of school!
One-to-One Personal Student Devices At HMS, teachers are encouraged to incorporate strategies, develop activities, and structure classrooms so that students are using digital resources some of the time, not necessarily every day, to enhance their learning experience. In order to assist in the implementation of this Blended Learning model, all students at HMS are assigned a personal device. In addition, students should have a bag that their device can be safely carried in and students are expected to use the bag at all times when in the hallways and moving throughout the building. Devices help students learn to communicate with others, gather information, share ideas, and create products in new ways.

Social Studies Course Overview:
Sixth grade is the first year of a two-year World Studies course. Sixth grade students study Latin America, Canada, Europe, and Australia. The
goal of this two-year course is to acquaint middle school students with the world in which they live. The geography domain includes both physical
and human geography. The intent of the geography domain is for students to begin to grasp the importance geography plays in their everyday
lives. The government/civics domain focuses on selected types of government found in the various areas so as to help students begin to understand
the variety of governments in the world. The economics domain builds on the K-5 economics; however, the focus shifts from the United States to
how other countries answer the basic questions of economics. The history domain focuses on major events in each region during the twentieth and
twenty-first centuries. (https://www.georgiastandards.org/Georgia-Standards/Documents/Social-Studies-6th-Grade-Georgia-Standards.pdf)HMS READING

Placement for World Languages Students
Q: When do students begin year-long World Languages (WL) studies in Fulton County Schools (FCS)?
Year-long WL courses begin in 6th grade. Here are the FCS World Languages Offered by Zone.
Q: How do students qualify to start taking year-long WL courses in 6th grade?
Students may enroll in a year-long 6th grade WL course if their Grade 5 Reading Semester 1 average is 80 or
higher (Reading 5 On-Level, Reading 5 Advanced) or is 70 or higher (Reading 6 Accelerated) AND/OR there
is a recommendation from their Grade 5 Reading teacher. Middle School Placement Guidelines FY23
Q: What are other options for WL in 6th grade?
Students may, depending on their middle school’s WL offerings, take a WL course as part of the
Connections curriculum or enroll in year-long Spanish for Native Speakers*, where offered, as a 6th grader.
(*For native/heritage Spanish speakers only).
Q: What is the articulation for middle school WL?
• Year-long 6th Grade WL is an introductory course and is not required to take WL in 7th grade.
• 7th and 8th Grade WL courses combine to equal Level 1 of high school WL.
• Some FCS middle schools offer an accelerated WL track where students may earn 2 high school WL
credits by completing Level 1 of WL in 6th and 7th grades, and Level 2 of WL in 8th grade. See link to
WL Offered by Zone, above.
Q: What is the articulation for high school WL?
• Students who successfully complete WL at the middle school level may continue to Level 2 or 2
Honors of the same language they studied in middle school. Accelerated middle school WL
students may continue to Level 3 or 3 Honors of the same language. High School Placement
Guidelines FY23
• Students may decline high school WL credit for courses taken at the middle school level. Those
students should not retake those courses in high school but should change to another world
language or take a placement test to determine proper placement. Middle School Opt-In for High
School WL Credit
• Students who did not take WL at the middle school level should begin at Level 1 of a WL, unless
they already have proficiency in a WL.
• Native or heritage speakers of Spanish should be given the option to take Spanish for Native
Speakers (SNS) where offered. The SNS pathway includes SNS1, SNS2 and SNS3 and meets
graduation and college entrance requirements.
Q: How is WL proficiency determined?
Students coming to FCS with prior proficiency in a language other than English may demonstrate
proficiency by taking a reading/writing/speaking test at the local high school (administered and/or
facilitated by the WL department chair), or by other testing means so that proper placement and/or award
of high school credit may be determined.
Q: What are some other options for earning WL credit?
• Students who were born outside of the United States may be tested for their native language
proficiency and, depending on test results, may earn up to two high school credits in that language
via Credit in Lieu of Enrollment.
• Students may seek credit outside of FCS by completing an Off-Campus Course Request.
• Students may contact their school counselor for further information on these credit options.Performing Arts Music Department
Hopewell Middle School Music Department
Band, Chorus, & Orchestra
Dear Parents of Rising 6th Graders:
Welcome to Hopewell! Your child will have many wonderful opportunities next year, one of which is to become involved with
the Hopewell Music Department. We are very proud of our music programs’ numerous accomplishments, and we are excited
to introduce you and your student to the music options offered at HMS. More than half of all students at Hopewell Middle
School participate in either band, chorus, or orchestra. 6th grade students can join, regardless of whether they have previously
played an instrument or sung in chorus. Beginners are welcome, and students with prior experience are encouraged to
continue!
Music classes are a year-long commitment, and students are expected to continue throughout middle and high school. There
is also a financial commitment. Parents will be responsible for providing instruments, supplies, method books, and uniforms.
More information will be distributed at a later date. Please note that students are never denied participation due to financial
hardship.
Below are brief descriptions of each class. Each class is a performance-based course of study aligned with the Georgia
Performance Standards. All three performing groups participate in group instruction and perform several times each year. In
addition, students will have opportunities for both individual and group enrichment activities, such as performance field trips,
competitions, honor ensembles, and much more. Classes will require hard work, dedication, and a commitment to having fun!
Band is comprised of the woodwind, brass, and percussion families of instruments. Woodwinds include the flute, clarinet,
saxophone, bassoon, and oboe. Brass instruments include the trumpet, trombone, French horn, baritone, and tuba. Concert
band percussion includes the xylophone and marimba which are similar to the piano, in addition to snare drum, bass drum,
and timpani (a student who plays percussion plays all of these instruments and many more ).
Chorus is the performing music class that sings! The human voice is the most personal, most versatile and most available
musical instrument – it is always with you! Choral students learn how to sing in harmony, sing solos, and sing a capella (without
instruments!), as they develop musicianship and music reading skills. Choral students perform in a variety of concerts with a
wide range of musical styles including traditional choral, jazz, classical, musical theatre and pop. Through performance
opportunities, students develop stage presence and confidence as they perform throughout the year. Singing skills developed
in chorus provide a foundation for future success in many fields of study!
Orchestra is comprised of the string family of instruments. These include the violin- the smallest and highest pitched of the
string instruments, the viola- a mellow midrange instrument slightly larger than a violin, the cello- a great lower register
instrument, and the string bass - the largest and lowest of the family. Students will have an opportunity to try each string
instrument before choosing their specific instrument. All string instruments come in multiple sizes for different sized players.
Thank you for taking the time to discuss the musical option you feel will be best for your student. In joining our music program,
your child will begin a journey which will evolve into a lifetime of music appreciation and enjoyment. We look forward to
having your child join our Mustang music family!

Sixth graders entering the HMS band program start on flute, clarinet, trumpet, or trombone, and are placed in either the woodwind or brass class. There will be an opportunity for students to switch to other instruments such as oboe, bassoon, saxophone, French horn, tuba, or percussion at the end of the first semester. HMS bands travel annually to participate in music festivals and competitions. Past performances have taken place in Florida, Georgia, Indiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia, and have included amusement parks such as Busch Gardens, Carowinds, Dollywood, Six Flags, and Universal Studios. Members of the Hopewell band program have consistently earned chairs in both District Honor Band and All-State Band. Students have also participated in the University of Georgia Middle School Band Festival, the Jacksonville State University Honor Band Clinic, and the Reinhardt University Middle School Honor Band Clinic. Students who sign up for Band will complete an instrument selection process to decide which ones are most suitable for them (preferences will be taken into consideration!). More information regarding instrument selection will be sent home at a later date. HMS Chorus (www.hmschorus.wordpress.com) In the HMS Chorus, students improve natural talent by learning vocal skills and techniques in daily rehearsal. Students learn to sight-read music as part of a comprehensive musicianship program along with performance concerts in the fall, winter and spring and additional performance opportunities throughout the year. The HMS Chorus also perfoms frequently for community events such as the annual Tree-Lighting, The Milton Round-up and the Milton Senior Center events. Each grade level has two chorus classes, mixed chorus and treble chorus, and often performs across grade levels as well as combines with all classes in performances. Classes generally range from 25-35 students per class. The HMS Chorus has consistently received Superior ratings for performance and sight-reading at our annual District Large Group Performance Evaluation as well as a first place ranking in Music in the Parks Festival at Six Flags over Georgia. The HMS Chorus has also received invitations to perform at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida as part of the Disney Performing Arts Program in addition to performances at local events. HMS Chorus students have regularly been selected as members of the Georgia Music Educators District Honor Chorus, Georgia All State Chorus, Spivey Hall Honor Choir Workshop, 6th Grade Statewide Honor Chorus, American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) Southern Division Honor Chorus as well as the ACDA National Honor Chorus. HMS Orchestra (www.hopewellorchestra.weebly.com) Students in the HMS Orchestra learn to play violin, viola, cello, and bass. The 6th grade orchestra focuses on developing basic technique (bowing and left hand), note reading skills, music theory, and musicianship; in addition to building a strong sense of responsibility, teamwork, and commitment. Sixth grade orchestra students participate in three concerts, with additional performance opportunities throughout the school year. The HMS Orchestras participate annually in the Music in the Parks and Trills and Thrills Festivals at Six Flags over Georgia and Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tn. The orchestras have won first place and Best Overall Orchestra distinctions at both festivals. Hopewell Orchestras have also received invitations to perform at the Georgia Music Educators Association In-Service Conference in Savannah, the Governor’s Mansion Holiday Open House, and the Disney Performing Arts Program at Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL. The HMS Orchestras have consistently received Superior ratings for performance and sight-reading at the GMEA District Five Large Group Performance Evaluation. HMS Orchestra students have regularly been selected as members of the GMEA All-State Orchestra, Fulton County Youth Orchestras, GMEA District Five Middle School Honor Orchestra, and GMEA Solo and Ensemble.
