How to Grow Tomatoes Using the Florida Weave Staking Method Cages topple, single stakes struggle with heavy plants, and trellises can be expensive — but the Florida weave uses just stakes and twine to support an entire row of tomatoes cheaply and effectively. Learning how to grow tomatoes with this method gives you a professional-level staking system from hardware store materials that costs almost nothing. The Florida weave works by running twine along both sides of a row of tomatoes, sandwiching the plants between parallel strings that rise as the plants grow taller throughout the season. How the Florida Weave Works Drive sturdy stakes every two to three plants along the row, then weave twine along one side at about twelve inches high, loop it around each stake, then weave back along the other side at the same height. The plants are held upright between the two parallel lines of twine. As plants grow, add a new level of weave every eight to twelve inches of growth, building a ladder of support that keeps even heavy, fruit-laden plants upright without cages. Materials You Need T-posts or sturdy wooden stakes at least six feet tall, and a roll of garden twine or baling twine. Total cost for a twenty- foot row is typically under fifteen dollars.
