More in depth
Every 3 years the Council submits a roading maintenance
Plan to Transit NZ(now Waka Kotahi). Transit needs to
approve the projects proposed. Under the ‘One Network
Framework, roads are divided into categories and are
funded accordingly by central Government. Rural roads
are generally ‘general traffic’ or ‘freight’.

For the last Long Term Plan, (and again for this one),
Transit cut the funding for our roading maintenance. This
left us with a roading debt of $950,000 which will be
paid down in 4 years.
This funding comes from Road User Charges, Petrol Ex-
cise Duty (Tax) and Licence Fees (Rego). Under the cur-
rent government, more of this money has gone towards The Memorial Hall has been

1. To make the pastry, process the flour, sugar, salt and
butter together until combined. Add the egg yolk and milk
and pulse until the mixture just comes together.
2. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead
lightly. Press the dough into a disc shape, wrap in cling
film and refrigerate for about 45 minutes.
3. Remove the dough from the fridge and roll into a
circle large enough to line a 22cm fluted, loose-based
tart tin. Ease the pastry into the tin, trim the edge, and
prick the base all over with a fork. Refrigerate for a fur-
ther 30 minutes.
4. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Line the pastry with foil
and fill with uncooked rice, dried beans or pastry
weights. Bake for 15 minutes. Carefully remove the
weights and foil and return to the oven until the pastry
is crisp and lightly golden, about a further 10 minutes.
Allow to cool.
5. For the filling, beat the eggs and sugar together with
electric beaters until thick and creamy. Gradually add
the lemon juice, then the flour, and mix until just com-
bined. Pour the filling into the pastry shell and bake at
180°C for 15 minutes – the top will be well browned.
6. Reduce the oven temperature to 150°C and bake
until the filling has set, about a further 10 minutes. Re-
move from the oven to cool.
7. Serve lightly dusted with
icing sugar and softly
whipped cream. Everyone should know how to make

Overview of netball from Saturday.

A cold day in Waiau for the netball teams but some fantastic play
and effort from all the teams.

The Gavins Logging Senior A team had a win, with player of the
day being Jazmin Cuff.

The Alpine Hanmer Electrical Senior B team had a loss, with
player of the day being Laura Cundy.

And the Under-14s played twice, fighting hard but ultimately losing
both games. Player of the day was Amelia Nelson.

Thanks to Monteiths and Fire & Ice for the player of the day
vouchers.

Next weeks games are in Culverden, where Hurunui Netball will
also be celebrating its 75th jubilee.

All previous players and people involved with netball are welcome Vegetar-
