great for recruitment (earlier nesting hens tend to
have more successful nesting attempts) it can
make for a frustrating hunt due to reduced
gobbling activity and fewer gobblers responding
to calling. A hen’s receptiveness to breeding can
be like switching a light on. It happens quick and
when it happens around opening weekend hunter
success declines rapidly. Stay flexible when
possible on hunt dates. Or better yet, scatter days
afield across the season and you will find more
receptive hens.
