How Do I Prepare to Apply to a University Program?!

Please take the time to ensure you are prepared to apply to university. Below is a checklist
    of items to consider

 Earn your Ontario Secondary School Diploma by June 2018
o Successfully complete (or be registered in) 18 compulsory credits
o Successfully complete (or be registered in) 12 elective credits
o Successfully complete a minimum of 40 hours of community involvement
o Pass the literacy test or complete the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course

 Earn a minimum of six grade 12 University (U) and/or University/College (M) courses by
  June 2018
o English (ENG4U1) is one of the six grade 12 courses
o Note: Some universities have restrictions on the number of “M” courses that
they will include in the admissions average!

 Cost of applications on OUAC is $150 for 3 choices (programs and/or university). Each
additional choice costs $50. Any time, beyond the initial 3, that you add an additional
choice there is a $50 fee, unless you withdraw a choice and then add another choice at
  the same institution.

 Keep track of the important dates outlined in this information package

 Update your email address on Career Cruising so that Guidance services can contact
you. Have your GAPPS account redirected to the same email account as Career Cruising

 Watch for emails daily

 Regularly look at bulletin boards outside of Guidance for current information, upcoming
  events and scholarship information

 Book appointments with your Guidance counsellor when you need assistance

                      Semester 1
               Ms. Beer A-di
               Ms. Perin Do-Ki
               Ms. Taylor Kl-Pe

Review your IPP (Career Cruising) and think about your skills and interests. Are you especially
interested in:
           o Mathematics
o Fine Arts (visual arts, music, theatre)
o General Arts (sociology, humanities, languages, philosophy, political science etc)
           o Business
           o Sciences
           o Physical Education
           o Education

Then look on electronicinfo.ca at “Find a Program”
       Eg. General Arts- Criminology
Electronicinfo.ca tells you there are 47 programs in that field. Narrow down your
choices based on where the program is offered, required courses and cut-off
              averages.
Then go to the university website to verify information.

Choosing a university can be a lengthy process. When choosing where you want to go consider
the following:

How Do I Choose a University?!
           o Academic programs
o Location of university- close to home or far away, small town/big city
           o Size of university
o Costs to commute home for holidays/breaks
           o Career preparation
           o Graduate programs
           o Co-op opportunities
           o Available scholarships
o How you will commute if you live at home
o Residence costs and residence facilities
           o Sports and recreation complexes
           o Campus life
o Student services (extra help, accessibility, IEP support, mental wellness etc)

VISIT THE CAMPUSES – open houses occur throughout the year (see einfo for dates)

                                                                                                3
