JDS Program 2019-2020
The Junior Development Squad (JDS) gives U12 – U16 athletes an opportunity to develop additional
skills and improve technical competencies through participation in coaching and training sessions with
some of Victoria’s leading coaches. Training with other keen and enthusiastic squad members is both
fun and motivational and helps develop new friendships based on an enjoyment of athletics. The
emphasis is to provide a friendly and supportive environment. The program consists of coaching days,
educational sessions, invites to events and a highlight for the year is the JDS coaching camp.

JDS Day 1 – Sunday 6th October 2019                          Time: 12.00pm – 4.30pm
Venue – Tom Kelly Athletics Track, Doncaster
  Introduction and Coaching day. Coaches will present outline for the season, athletes will
     receive the JDS t-shirt. Training will consist of 2 x 75min rotations in your approved events.

JDS Day 2 – Sunday 20th October 2019                               Time: 12.15pm – 4.00pm
Venue – Keilor Athletics Track, Keilor Park
  Coaching rotation day, training will consist of 2 x 75min rotations in your approved events.
JDS Day 3 – Sunday 10th November 2019                              Time: 12.15pm – 4.00pm
Venue – Knox Athletics Track, Knoxfield
  Coaching rotation day, training will consist of 2 x 75min rotations in your approved events.
JDS Camp (additional cost) Sunday 19th – Wednesday 22nd January 2020
The JDS Camp is only open to U13 – U16 athletes. Max of 80 athletes.
Venue – Ormond College, Melbourne University, Parkville
  Live in Camp at historical Ormond College, utilizing Melbourne University’s outstanding
     facilities. Daily training sessions are interspersed with activities that help build the overall
     athletic experience.
JDS Day 4 – Sunday 9th February 2020                                       Time: 12.15pm - 4.00pm
Venue – Newport Park Athletics Track, Williamstown
   Coaching rotation day, training will consist of 2 rotations in preparation for Region Track
     & Field Carnivals.

JDS Day 5 – Sunday 24th May 2020                                   Time: 12.30pm - 3.30pm
Venue – Ruffey Lake Park, The Boulevarde, Doncaster
  Winter Pre-season training for Sprinters / Jumpers / Throwers – Conditioning training using
    hills, core strength and mobility training elements during the preparation phase.
   Cross Country training & Middle Distance running. Coaching based upon, preparation,
    training programs, course management and technique of Cross Country & Middle
    Distance running.
JDS Day 6 – Saturday 15th August 2020                          Time: 12.00pm – 4.00pm
Venue – Willinda Park, Beatrix St, Greensborough
  Pre Season Circuit & Testing Day: Preparation for the new season based on Biometrics
     testing & analysis, through circuit types activities, including Pilates. All athletes will receive
     their test results and these will be compared to previous years to track development.

Qualifying for Season 2019-2020

 JDS is open to eligible & qualified athletes in the U12 to U16 age groups only.
 JDS qualifying standards are reviewed and adjusted every year.
 Up until 30th September 2019, athletes use the results from season 2018-2019, following this date
  athletes qualify in their age group for season 2019-2020.
 U11 athletes qualify using the applicable standards; registration is between July – September
  prior to the new season commencing.
 An athlete must qualify in 1 event twice or 2 separate events once to be eligible.
 Top 8 finish at the LAVic State Combined Events or LAVic State Cross Country Championships is
  an automatic qualifier; a second event is not required for qualification purposes.
 Once the season commences, athletes can only use current season results for qualification
  purposes, in their current age group.
 Registrations will close from Wednesday 2nd October until Monday 7th October; athletes cannot
  attend JDS Day 1 – Sunday 6th October unless they have registered before 2nd October, without
  exception.
 A copy of the results is to be supplied to verify the performance used on the registration portal
  except for LAVic Region Carnival or LAVic State Championship results, otherwise registration will
  not be accepted.
 The results for LAVic Region & State are available on www.lavic.com.au
 Athletes need to qualify and re-apply each year to become members.

    The athletes can achieve the qualifying performances at any of the following.
     1. Little Athletics Victoria Centre competition, Open days, Region & State events.
        (Region & State results are best to use for ease of qualification).
     2. SSV Region & State events (Primary or Secondary), SSA National Championships.
     3. AV Shield, AV & AA Junior Championships, State & National All Schools competitions.
     4. APS / AGS Combined finals.
 Performances at Schools District and Division carnivals are NOT accepted.
 A return email will be sent out confirming acceptance or otherwise.
 Multi-class athletes should contact the LAVic Office for qualification requirements.

Squad Fee & Benefits
    Squad fee is $120.00 + processing fee, this entitles you to:
   Attend all JDS sessions, 6 coaching days.
   Access to Performance testing data and reporting.
   Access to purchase official JDS compression gear, JDS backpack and other items at reduced
    prices.
   Official JDS T-Shirt, which needs to be worn at all JDS activities.
   Official JDS Shoe Bag (New Members only).
   Sessions with elite athletes, coaches & sport science presenters.
   Parent education sessions.
   U13-U16 athletes only, have the opportunity to attend the JDS Coaching Camp. This is an
    additional cost, approximately $425.00 open to 80 JDS athletes. Applications are released
    late October.

Events offered and selection criteria
        Events offered on the training days will be from the following:
           o Sprints A – 100 & 200mts ( combined )
           o Sprints B – 400mts
           o Hurdles – Sprint and Long Hurdles
           o Middle Distance A – 800mts
           o Middle Distance B – 1500mts
           o Race Walking
           o Long Jump
           o Triple Jump
           o High Jump
           o Shot Put
           o Discus
           o Javelin
           o Pilates – core strength and stability sessions.
        When registering, athletes are required to select 2 events for their training days. The
         order of these is not relevant as they are adjusted to balance out the coaching
         numbers in each rotation.
        Athletes are required to select events that they qualified in for their training, unless they
         are highly competent in another event.
        Athletes will NOT be able to choose an event that they do not demonstrate
         competency in. This is to ensure equal participation and fairness to all athletes in the
         event. JDS is for athletes to further develop their demonstrated skills and build upon
         and refine their technique.
        In order to demonstrate competency, athletes must submit results for all events
         selected for training. In some cases further details will be requested, if there is doubt on
         the athlete’s performances in those events.
        Athlete numbers might be limited in certain field events, due to coach-athlete ratios.
        Athletes qualifying against the Combined Events standard will have their event
         selection checked to ensure it satisfies the criteria as above.
        Middle Distance (MD) is spilt into 2 distances of 800mts and 1500mts. At times the
         athletes will be training together.
        Athletes can only select 1 event from Sprints B-400mts, Middle Dist A-800mts & Middle
         Dist B -1500mts events, due to the nature and intensity of the training session and
         recovery period between sessions.
        Pilates will be offered to these athletes, as well as athletes from other events if they
         wish to improve their core strength and stability. Pilates is not for injured athletes, as it is
         requires muscle and core strength activation.
        If athletes only qualify for one event and they do not demonstrate competency in
         other events, then they will be added to the Pilates rotation.
