                             ETA: Q1 2019

The eagerly anticipated fifth generation of Toyota’s popular
midsize SUV adopts a completely new design that lifts cues from
                    the company’s bold FT-AC concept.
       Brace of new engines: there’s an all-new 2,0-litre inline-four
with a host of efficiency-boosting features and class-leading
40% thermal efficiency. It is joined by a new powerful 2,5-litre
petrol engine, which is utilised in both conventional petrol and
hybrid configurations. Buyers will have a choice between manual,
redeveloped CVT or newly employed eight-speed direct-shift
auto transmissions. The petrol powerplants will remain the focal
point of the local range, with hybrid variants under consideration.
New platform: based on Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA)
platform, some models will usher in Rear Driveline Disconnect,
which channels drive to the front wheels when AWD isn’t required,
as well as active torque vectoring.

                                                                                          Vol. 62 No 04/May 2018

I had never seen anything like
                                     it. Heads snapped round,
fingers pointed, eyes widened, mouths dropped.
It was the kind of petrolhead response usually
reserved for the rarest of supercars.
This, however, was no mid-engined, low-slung slice of performance car aris-
tocracy I was driving, but something that usually putters about at the other
end of the automotive spectrum. It was a bakkie ... a diesel bakkie.
It’s the same double cab that caused our website to fall over – twice – such
was the online interest when the first official images were revealed to the world
back in October 2016. The double cab in question is, of course, the Mercedes-
Benz X-Class and, this month, we have another South African exclusive for you:
on page 50 is the first comprehensive test of this much-anticipated vehicle.
It’s also the return fire in an opening salvo of what looks to be a rather
interesting bakkie war developing between Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz.
And make no mistake, it is a war. The 165 kW/550 N.m VW Amarok 3,0 V6 TDI
launched last year set new standards for one-tonner double cabs in terms of
price, luxury and power. It’s also my new long-term test car (see page 88) and it
represents a shot across the bows that Mercedes-Benz will answer with the
190 kW/550 N.m X350d hitting SA shores in the fourth quarter. VW, meanwhile,
is already planning its counteroffensive with an uprated 190 kW and 580 N.m
V6 launching here in 2019. Added to this have been sniping remarks made by
executives from VW – and even BMW – about the X-Class’ Nissan Navara roots.
You seldom hear public comments like this unless all concerned have, or plan
to have, a massive stake in the developing segment.
It’s not the only looming battle, either. Earlier this year, we saw the unveiling of
the Ford Ranger Raptor, another bakkie that has garnered massive interest here in
SA. It was soon followed by reports stating both Toyota and Nissan were planning
Raptor competitors in this new performance pick-up niche.
So, yes, challenges have been made and accepted, sabres have been rattled; it
definitely looks like we’re witnessing the rumblings of a battle that holds great
interest for a nation like ours where bakkies regularly top the sales charts.

                                                      SWITCHES CAN BE DEADLY
All over South Africa there are millions of sub-standard, unsafe electrical products on offer and
installed in residential, commercial and industrial buildings. Despite compulsory specifications to
protect users, unscrupulous and negligent suppliers make these products available at great risk to
users who buy and install them.

Non-compliant products can cause injury and death due to fire or electrocution. At best your

From appearances it is almost impossible to distinguish a SAFE electrical switch from a dangerous
one. The SAFEhouse Association has produced a guide to help you understand how electrical
switches work, what compulsory specifications apply and how to guard against using dangerous
                                                      products.
