                    3. PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

                               •       As a member of the High Performance Team, lead the union’s Player Development
                                       strategy with the aim of being regarded as the best programme in the country
                               •       Co-ordinate Coaching resources to assist in the implementation of the Player
                                       Development programme
                               •       To have a sound knowledge of the Union’s goals and objectives and to contribute
                                       to the achievement of these to the best of his or her ability
                               •       Lead the talent identification and retention strategy for players from under 19 level
                                       down to ensure we see greater numbers retained in the union
                               •       Foster positive and productive relationships with players, parents and the wider
                                       rugby community to support the identification and retention strategy

4. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Key Performance Areas

Academy (50%)        •   To facilitate the development of systems and processes that will enhance
                         the development of talented rugby players at a provincial level.
                     •   To oversee the Provincial Union Academy. This will include;
                     -   Identification and selection of participants, including working with CEO,
                         Head Coach and Rugby Manager on player contracting
                     -   Content Development
                     -   Delivery Support
                     -   Promotion of the Academy
                     •   To undertake ongoing Quality Assessment of the Provincial Union
                         Academy including monthly reporting of all Academy members and their
                         progress against individual goals
                     •   Provision of educational/career support and advice for academy
                         members, including liaison with tertiary providers on individual academy
                         members needs as required
                     •   Provision of appropriate rugby specific educational, technical and
                         mentoring advice to academy members on the six pillars of development
                     -   Physical
                     -   Nutrition
                     -   Technical
                     -   Tactical
                     -   Mental
                     -   Leadership/Holistic
                     •   Utilization of the NZRU High Performance Hub player development model
                         as a basis for the succession planning, identification and development of
                         high performance players
                     •   Development and implementation of players Individual Performance Plans
                         (IPP’s) based on their needs across the six pillars, including utilization of
                         the Rugby Database to monitor them
                     •   Complete all agreed NZRU quarterly key performance indicators as
                         required
                     •   Liaison with local employers and Professional Development Manager to
                         seek out and provide employment opportunities for academy members
                     •   Provision of general advice and guidance on “life skills” to prepare
                         members for the rugby environment and a life outside of rugby. As well
                         as assistance with
                     -   Accommodation
                     -   Personal advice and counseling
                     -   Financial advice
                     •   Conduct formal evaluations on all academy players on a bi-annual basis
                     •   Work closely with the Franchise High Performance Manager to identify
                         and develop high performance players that have the ability and potential to
                         play Super Rugby for the region’s Franchise Team.
                     •   Work closely with the Professional Development Manager and the NZ
                         Rugby Players Association to ensure that the non-rugby development of
                         high performance players is well balanced and coordinated.
Player               §    Manage the delivery of the union’s player identification, selection plan for

                     §    To Manage all other Player Development Programs in conjunction with
                          other support staff including;
                              § U18 Boys and U19 Boys
                     §    Assist age grade representative teams to implement best Practice player
                          development initiatives.

                     §     Undertake reviews of initiatives and seek feedback from participants

                          Head Coach and Rugby Manager
                     §    Undertake other reasonable duties to meet team and/or organisation
                          objectives as directed by the CEO, Head Coach or Rugby Manager

5. DIMENSIONS

Strategic Goal 2: Rugby is the sport of choice for teenagers aged 13-20 within Northland

The teenage years of 13-20 have been identified as the biggest declining area of rugby
participation within Northland. Our goal is to stop the decline of players continuing from Primary
age into the teenage years of rugby and to get growth from new players.

We will achieve this by:
   • Growing the number of coaches and providing solid pathways for them
   • Increase the participation of teenage women in all parts of rugby – playing, coaching,
        refereeing
   • Identifying, monitoring and supporting our rugby players 13-18 who are pursuing
        education and sporting opportunities outside of Northland through our Future Taniwha
        Returning & Retaining programme
