Jottings from Fr. Joe Horn
Dear Parish Family,
                                                               LENT AND
Preparing for Holy Week
Holy week is the most holy and sacred time of year HOLY WEEK
for Catholics. Starting next week, beginning with Palm SCHEDULE
Sunday, the faithful will walk with our Lord Jesus Christ
on the way to Calvary. The readings, Mass, and litur- 2021
gies of Holy Week will “make present” once again the
events that led to our salvation. As disciples of Jesus
we are expected to make time for God, both in per-
sonal prayer and in prayer with the community. It is Every Friday during Lent:
my hope that we all set aside Holy Week, especially Adoration – 6:00 PM
Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of Holy Week, as days Stations of the Cross-7:00 PM
of increased prayer.
                                                                      Palm Sunday-March 28, 2021
These three days are referred to as the Triduum—the 7:00, *9:00 and 10:45 AM, 12:30 PM,
most sacred three days of the year. The Triduum is
*4:00 PM (Spanish), and 6:00 PM Masses
like a documentary of the last days of Christ broken
into three parts. On Holy Thursday only two Mass- Holy Thursday-April 1 2021
es are allowed to be celebrated: The Chrism Mass at                    8:30 AM Morning Prayer;
the cathedral where priests renew their commitment *7:00 PM Mass of the Lord’s Supper

                                                                       Good Friday-April 2, 2021
use in our sacraments. These oils are used to anoint
the sick, those who will be baptized, those who will be 8:30 AM Morning Prayer,
confirmed, and those who will be ordained. The only 12:00 PM Stations of the Cross,
other Mass celebrated on Thursday is the Mass of the *1:00 PMLiturgy of the Passion,
Lord’s Supper where we gather in the upper room with *7:00 PM Tenebrae

disciples. 8:30 AM Morning Prayer,
The second part of the Triduum is Good Friday where 11:00 AM Blessing of the Baskets,
the liturgy reminds us of the Lord’s passion and death. *8:00 PM Easter Vigil Mass
Mass is not celebrated, the cross becomes our focus
in the liturgy as we venerate the crucifix. It is a day of Easter Sunday-April 4, 2021
universal fasting and abstinence. That evening we pray 7:00, *9:00 and 10:45 AM, 12:30 and **2:30 PM
evening prayer together in a beautiful service called (Spanish) Masses, No 6:00 PM Masses

Tenebrae. If you have never attended a Tenebrae ser-
vice, I suggest you make this year your first. It is a pow-
erfully moving prayer which reminds us that though
Christ’s body is in the tomb, He is about to be risen at
Easter.
And finally the third part of the Triduum is the Easter
Vigil liturgy where, with great celebration, we welcome
the Risen Christ. We begin with the Lucinarium, the
lighting of the Paschal candle, from which all the other
lights in the church are lit. On this night we baptize
those in the RCIA who have been preparing all year,
some are confirmed, and others are received fully into
the faith.

and, please, make room for these special liturgies in
your busy schedules.

games from season 2 of The

with reams of paper on our feet.
In the end, only one team took
home the gold colored yogurt lid,
and that was Team Voldemort (I
said his name, whoops).

I’ve always been someone who believes by seeing and I’ve always heard
‘God will show you the signs when you’re ready’. This was something I
always struggled with because in my heart, I knew there was something
bigger out there but I couldn’t grasp the concept because I couldn’t
see it. I always looked for signs where I could and since my fiancé and
I started attending Shrine a few years back, I couldn’t help but notice
                                      them.
For instance, when my fiancé asked me to marry him, we were making
our way to Pyramid Point, part of Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes, and it was
raining the whole ride there. As we started to hike, it was continuing
to sprinkle, as soon as we got to the outlook, where he asked me to
marry him, the rain stopped and the sun started shining. Shortly after
this, I made the decision that I wanted to be baptized and really start
                                      my journey.
The defining moment that solidified that this was what God wanted was when I choose my Godmother to
accompany me on my journey. I told her the saint’s name I had chosen to take, Cecilia, and she told me that
was her godmother’s name. Later that day, we went to dinner to celebrate our day spent with God and a
picture of Mother Theresa was on the wall in the corner. My godmother turned to me and said “We were
meant to be here today.” I think that was God’s way of telling me I made the perfect choice.”

Divine Mercy Celebration
Divine Mercy Sunday is celebrated on the
Sunday after Easter. Divine Mercy has a simple
message: that God loves us all and that His
Mercy is greater than our sins. Jesus desires
us to trust in His Mercy so that His Mercy can
flow through us. This year Shrine will celebrate
the feast with a variety of events for people of
all ages. Mark your calendars and join us as we
reflect on Jesus’ gift of Divine Mercy and how it
                                             changes hearts and transforms lives.

                                               1942-1980
St. Oscar was an archbishop in El Salvador during a
time of political and social unrest.
He was not swayed by politics or people, and was a
vocal critic of the government and rebels. His
outspoken support of the poor brought threats to his
               life.
He was martyred while saying Mass at a hospital.
We pray to him for the courage to live our faith
               faithfully.

Calling all Women! Join us for:
Embracing Edith Stein: Wisdom for Women
from St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross
                                                          Begins Friday, April 9
                                                      9:30-11:30 AM Location: TBD

St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) was a philosopher, spiritual writer,
feminist, Carmelite, and inspiration for Pope John Paul II’s writings on the feminine
genius and Theology of the Body. Her writings on women’s spirituality are an inspiration
for all women as we seek to discover our authentic identity as women created in the
                           image and likeness of God.
We will be reading and reflecting on Stein’s writings from the book entitled: Embracing
Edith Stein: Wisdom for Women from St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross by Anne Costa. The book can be ordered
through Amazon. Cost for the book is $14.99 plus tax and shipping. Sessions will be facilitated by Judy Maten.
If you would like Judy to order the book for you, or if you have questions, please contact her at judym@
viamariaconsulting.com.
Location for the sessions will depend on COVID restrictions and weather. Early sessions may be via Zoom. RSVP
to Judy if you plan on attending.

                   Charism Workshop

Virtual sessions 4/22, 29 & May 6; 9:30-11 AM or 7:00-8:30 PM
Have you ever wondered:
     • How can I live a fulfilled and joy-filled life?
     • Am I living to my fullest potential?
     • What should I be doing at this stage of life?
     • What is God’s plan for me and how do I know I am on the right path?
We invite you to attend and discover the answer to these questions and more!
We will uncover how God has uniquely gifted you to live out your baptismal call, find happiness, lead a fulfilling
life, and go deeper in your relationship with Jesus. During the sessions, you will learn how both your spiritual
gifts (charisms) and natural talents are discerned, activated and exercised through ministry, career, volunteer
opportunities, and relationships with others. We will learn how to pray deeply so as to be able discern wisely.
Presenters for the sessions will be Judy Maten and Mary Garlow.
The workshop will begin on Thursday, April 15, in the Basilica from 7:00-8:30 PM. Sessions 2-4 will be held vir-
tually on Thursdays, April 22, 29, and May 6. We will gather back in the Basilica for session 5 on May 13, from
7:00-8:30 PM. Virtual sessions will meet from 9:30-11:00 AM or 7:00-8:30 PM—participants can select which
time slot best fits their needs.
Workbooks and handouts will be distributed on April 22, so please plan on arriving at least 10 minutes early to
pick up your materials. Bring a pen or pencil as well.
                        To register, go to https://viamariaconsulting.com/event-registration.
There will be a free-will offering collected at the first and fifth sessions in the Basilica to help cover costs.
