To ensure everyone's safety, please become familiar with the following protocols to help
reduce the spread of COVID-19

• Staff and participants will be required to complete a Daily Health Screening (DHS) before arriving at
class. Anyone feeling unwell will be asked to follow OPH protocols and stay home.
• The GCC doors will be locked at all times. Only program participants, rental groups and staff are
• permitted into the facility.
• To reduce overcrowding, the main door on Third Ave is a designated entrance into the building. All
other exterior doors are designated exits. Accommodations will be made for those who have issues
  with mobility.
• Please arrive at the GCC 10 minutes before the start of your class. This will allow for enough time to
check your DHS and get you settled into your class.
• Each class will have a designated area for participants to store their belongings during their class.
• Class sizes are reduced to allow for social distancing.
• Participants must hand sanitize and wear a face masks upon entering the building.
• Masks must be worn throughout your class while indoors. Physical activities are exempt.
• Please practice social distancing by following the markers & directional arrows throughout the facility.
• Regular sanitizing of high touch points will be conducted by staff and instructors however, all adult
participants will need to sanitize their own equipment before use including the use of bathrooms.
• Transition time will be quick between classes. This is to allow for enough time to sanitize and reset
the room for the next class.
• We ask that all inquiries and transactions to be done online, by email or phone.
• GNAG is offering two short in-person program sessions as a precaution in the event of a shut-down.
• As always, this situation continues to evolve. Please be assured our team will monitor the Provincial
and OPH requirements for any changes and GNAG will adjust its protocols accordingly.

Preparing for a Zoom class
If you've never joined a Zoom class before it's a good idea to download Zoom in advance. Go to
Zoom.us and follow the prompts.
1. Plan your set-up. For lots of classes it's important for the instructor to be able to see what
you are doing. Make sure your set-up can accommodate this.
2. Learn how to un-mute yourself for those times when there is an open discussion.
3. Learn how to switch from speaker to gallery view in order to see all your fellow participants.
4. Zoom ID link will be sent to you by email before the start of class.

What's In a Song Gr 5 - 8
with Kimberly Sunstrum
Tuesday s 6:00 - 7:30 pm Mar 30 - May 25 (ex Apr 13) $107 (8 classes)

Join us for another year of CityFolk's community program initiative "What's In The Song". This program invites young musi-
cians, songwriters and poets between the ages of 12-18 to gather together to work on the craft of songwriting. Kimberly
Sunstrum, a professional and established local songwriter will be the mentor for the duration of the class.

Each class will be broken up into:
a) listening to and analyzing the forms and structure of songs, old & new
b) overview of different genres and music style structures
c) group writing and techniques for idea development
d) individuals will bring in ideas for friendly feedback from the mentor and group.
The goal is to create at least two complete songs, each of which will be performed at a live-streamed event (for an invited
audience of family and friends) during the last class. In the event of a temporary facility closure, this in-person class will
move online. There will be no refunds due to this change.

Singer-songwriter Kimberly Sunstrum is a heart-stopping performer. Her song writing is deep, evocative, and powerful. An
inspired blend of the music she listened to growing up in Sub-Saharan Africa and Canada - classic R&B, South African pop,
old-time country and 70’s Motown - she weaves them together exquisitely.

She writes about the world as she sees it with a powerful poetry and grace. Mixed-race identity, feminism, queerness, love,
and family are reflections of her life and constant themes in her songs.

Sunstrum has performed in multiple festivals/showcases; RBC Bluesfest, Ottawa Jazz Fest, Westfest, MEGAPHONO, Nuit
D’Afrique CBC Showcases, Pride Events. She performs annually on the Soul Train Cruise, performing amidst legends like
Gladys Knight, The Commodores, Chakah Khan. Sunstrum was nominated for the Colleen Petersen Songwriting award
(2018) and for songwriter of the year in the 2019 Ottawa FACES awards.

Sunstrum’s second album, ‘The Slow Sprint’ was released on November 16th 2019 at the National Arts Centre to a sold out
crowd. The album is an authentic and a pleasing new chapter in her career.

Kimberly Sunstrum is currently working on a new album to be released in 2021.
