Charles!
Deacon (Dcn). Charles Wilton is a seminarian studying for the
diocese of Arlington, Virginia at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary
in Emmitsburg, Maryland. He’s just completed five years of
a six-year priestly formation program there, and he is also a
United States Navy veteran and Hospital Corpsman of 14 years;
a 14-year career that includes deployments to Fallujah, Iraq;
Kandahar Afghanistan, Djibouti, East Africa, and other places.
Charles is being co-sponsored by the Archdiocese for the
Military Services so once ordained, he will be returning to the
Navy as a Chaplain after his first parish assignment.
Dcn. Charles was born in Oakland, Ca in January 1977 and has
two younger siblings, both born in Seattle. The family moved
to the UK in 1980 and Charles lived there until 2003 when he
returned to the US to attend Navy Boot Camp at Great Lakes.
Illinois in 2003. His military career includes deployments to
Camp Lemonier in Djibouti, East Africa in 2004; Fallujah, Iraq with 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines out of Camp
Lejeune, NC n 2007; the 26 Marine Expeditionary Unit aboard the USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7-an amphibious
ship) in 2008, and a deployment to Kandahar, Afghanistan working at the NATO Role III hospital there in
2013. Some of his duty stations include Bethesda National Naval Hospital; Commander, U. S Naval Forces
Korea as the Navy Medical liaison to the US Army in Seoul region, and Marine Wing Support Squadron
171 at Marine Corps Air Station, Iwakuni, Japan. His last duty station as a Hospital Corpsman was at Navy
Medicine Education and Training Command in San Antonio, Texas, where he did curriculum management.
He was commissioned as an Ensign in the Chaplain Candidate Program on August 1st, 2017. Immediately
after the commissioning ceremony he left San Antonio to begin the drive to Maryland to begin Seminary.
Dcn. Charles holds an undergraduate degree in Business Studies from De Montfort University in Leicester,
England and a Master of Science in International Relations from Troy State, AL.
He first felt the call to the priesthood in 2013, shortly after converting to Catholicism from Anglicanism. His
conversion to Catholicism remains remarkable to him to this day and something he has often meditated
upon.
Dcn. Charles loves watching rugby and soccer (his team is Derby County-relegated this season), reading,
watching movies, and going to the gym. Dcn. Charles is very much looking forward to working at St.
Charles Borromeo.
