While the blockchain can do little to influence local legislators’ sales restrictions, it will have a great impact on the financial verification element of the sales process itself. By using a blockchain distributed database to prove authenticity, homeowners could legitimately transfer ownership immediately without the need to pay for third-party verification. Join Kevin Pogoda for a riveting session on the future of the land title industry. Kevin is a Past President of the Virginia Land Title Association, and First Vice President and Virginia State Manager (Northern Div) for Old Republic National Title Insurance Company. 1031 Tax Exchanges - Katherine Pantelakis, Esq. Also known as a tax-deferred exchange, the 1031 tax exchange allows the taxpayer to qualify for deferred gain treatment under certain circumstances. Learn tips and tricks for handling the 1031 exchange as a real estate settlement agent. Kassie is the Senior Vice President and National Sales Manager for Old Republic Exchange Company (ORE) and has held that role for the past 11 years. Earlier Kassie is a graduate of The Ohio Northern School of Law, and received her undergraduate degree from Baldwin-Wallace College. ALTA: Legislative Update & State of the Association - Patrick Beall Review national legislation and regulations affecting the land title industry, and stay up-to-date on national trends and ALTA news. This session is sure to keep you informed! Pat Beall serves as group president, with responsibility for agency operations and our mortgage service offerings. He is a member of the ALTA Board of Governors. Ethics for the Land Title Industry - John Micciche It is the responsibility of the settlement officer to conduct the closing in an legal, moral and ethical manner, in compliance with the Contract, the lender’s instructions and RESPA, the rules and regulations established by the Department of Housing and Urban Deve lopment (HUD) that govern the settlement process, as well as any State and local laws. This session will review potential pitfalls, and how to avoid unethical practices in the land title industry. Throughout his career, John Micciche has served title agents throughout Maryland as an agency representative, an area manager and a regional manager for various major underwriters. John serves as a resource for WFG National Title agents as well as growing the company’s agent network in the region. John currently serves as Vice President and Regional Manager for WFG National Title Insurance Company in the Chesapeake Region.

Saturday, June 9, 2018 Riparian Rights - J. James Basgier From vocabulary to pitfalls, review riparian rights, and test your knowledge on real cases encountered in Virginia. Jim is a specialist in real property research and title liens. He is a Virginia Certified Title Examiner and an active member of VLTA. Estates & Course of Descent - Robert Brooks, Esq. Review the proper procedure for documenting records related to estates and course of descent. This session will cover previous and current iterations of the course of descent. Rob is an attorney in Middlesex County, Virginia, and an active member of the Virginia Land Title Association. A Title Examiner's Guide to Bankruptcy, Liens, and Judgments - C. Jay Robbins When a property owner files for bankruptcy protection, he can no longer deal with the property as he pleases, and his creditors are stayed from suing him or enforcing liens against his property. Students who take this course will learn how to determine whether a party to a transaction is in bankruptcy and, if so, what requirements the party must satisfy to sell or mortgage his property. Students will also learn how to determine if a bankruptcy affects liens or encumbrances on property and what bankruptcy risks are covered by a title insurance policy. C. Jay Robbins is an attorney in Chesapeake, Virginia, a Virginia Certified Title Examiner, and an active member of the Virginia Land Title Association. State and Federal Settlement Law - Michael Holden & Kay Creasman, Esq. This session will review laws relevant to Virginia Settlement Agents as well as Federal laws pertaining to real estate closings. Brush up your understanding of everything from RESPA to FIRPTA, and remain compliant with proper settlement practices. Kay M. Creasman, Assistant Vice President & Counsel for Old Republic National Title Insurance Company, has worked in real estate in Virginia since 1976 as a title examiner, independent attorney, owner of a non-attorney title & settlement company, and counsel for national title underwriters. She has been actively involved with VLTA since 1994 serving at various times on the Board, Education & Legislative Committees, including being a Past President and Committee Chairperson. In addition, she is an Area Representative for the Real Estate Section of the Virginia State Bar and a frequent speaker on real estate issues in Virginia. Michael is Vice President and Strategic Agency Manager for North American Title Insurance Company. With over 28 years of personal experience in title insurance company management, underwriting, and marketing, Michael was named one of October Research’s “Top 40 under 40” in 2007. Michael is a member of the Virginia, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and American Land Title Associations. Title Talk Workshop - Connie Fuksa In this 2-hour presentation, we'll review consumer education strategies for title settlement agents. We'll cover how to break down complicated topics into simple descriptions, covering essential consumer information. Learn how to organize terms, speak consistently, speak to your audience, and share information on a successful schedule. Consumer education is our responsibility - let's do it well!
