                                                                                                    Karl Kerényi, born in 1897 in Temesvár, was
                                                                                                    one of the 20th century's leading scholars of
                                                                                                    comparative religion. After holding a
                                                                                                    professorship in Fünfkirchen (1936) he taught
                                                                                                    in Szeged after 1941, before moving to
                                                                                                    Switzerland in 1943, where he remained until
                                                                                                    his death in 1973.
