Healthcare Assistant Development
       Programme – closing date 12/2/2021
** Please disseminate to your HCAs for their information **
The West Yorkshire ICS (Integrated Care System) Primary Care Workforce
group have commissioned the Training Hub to delivery an HCA development
scheme. This exciting opportunity is open to 25 HCAs from across West
Yorkshire with an aspiration to progress further and play a key role in the
future NHS across West Yorkshire.

Course fees are being paid by the Training Hub and backfill funding is available
at £500 per HCA.

Course Aims
This course seeks to expand the capacity and capability of a group of identified
HCAs within each Regional GPN board. Opening up leadership opportunities
and providing support for their professional practice, the course offers a fresh
opportunity for the HCAs to develop skills while advancing their careers. This
programme of learning will support transition to the Nursing Associate role in
a General Practice setting with an enriched focus on care delivery and support
for people living with long-term conditions.

Healthcare Assistants (HCAs) play a key role in delivering excellent patient care
within general practice, and therefore developing and retaining those workers
is key to developing a workforce that is capable of meeting the future needs of
the NHS. This NHS funded course is designed specifically for Healthcare
Assistants within Primary Care. Students will be able to learn the key
knowledge and skills required to enable them to respond to the future
healthcare requirements and develop their career simultaneously.

The content is practice-based and you will, throughout the programme,
develop skills of decision making, team building, effective communication and
collaboration. You will explore how to develop practice improvements and
gain an overview of quality improvement methodologies and how these can
be applied in your workplace to benefit both patients and practice. Most of all,
this programme will give you the confidence and skills to manage
change. The course focuses on the four key pillars of the Health Education
England General Practice Nurses Service Education and Career Framework
(2015) and includes three online learning modules. These are:
• Introduction to Leadership and Management
• Facilitation of Learning
• Coaching in Practice

Healthcare Assistant Development
Programme – closing date 12/2/2021 cont..
These online learning resources are supported by practical activities and
two webinars. The fourth element of the programme is an interactive
clinical study session, facilitated by an expert in the chosen field. This
will usually take place during the final week of the course.

Course Outcomes - This course will enable you to:
Develop effective communications skills within healthcare delivery
Act as a coach for junior staff within the workplace using their
developed leadership skills
Provide specific training interventions
Teach essential skills in healthcare provision to others

First Contact Physio Placements
Dear all,

We are looking to identify practice placements in conjunction with the University of Bradford for 18 First
Contact Physios across West Yorkshire. These FCPs are all qualified Physios, working towards their Level
7 Advanced Practice in the discipline, with a specific accreditation for working in primary care. They are
all currently employed in primary care, but require placements in alternative practices to increase their
experience and be signed off against a set of agreed criteria – full details will be given to the host
practices.

We are targeting you as a practice with a recognised MSK service and/or known skilled practitioners
in this field. Having an ANP or GP who specialises in MSK would be ideal so they can act as a Clinical
Supervisor. Seeing and managing relevant patients is obviously crucial, but the sign off element is also
about primary care consultation skills – doubt management, red flags, communication skills, appropriate
sign-posting/onward referrals etc. A placement fee of £1,000 is payable for each placement offered.
And if you can think of other colleagues and practices that may be suitable, please let us know.

Each FCP requires 75 hours of placement time from 12th April until the end of August when all their
hours and paperwork must be complete; 10 x full days is recommended, but this may be flexible to suit
your practice. The day of the week is also flexible, arranged by you with your placement FCP. During
their time with you, they will do a mixture of observing the Clinical Supervisor you allocate to them and
running their own consultations under observation, with a 30 mins debrief at the end of each clinic or as
you go along. As they progress through the weeks, they will need less supervision. Sign off after each
session is very light-touch, with a recording of date, time and a pass/fail. After each debrief you will
simply circle on a form to say if you have covered e.g. something on their PDP, Case-Based Discussion,
Consultation Observation Tools etc.

It is hoped that as you get into a regular slot, your practice will be able to triage patients on a specific
theme (e.g. shoulder pain) and book them in for the next clinic the FCP will attend. You are also very
welcome to use some of their time benefitting your practice e.g. in service evaluation and possible
quality improvement audits.

If you can please help with educating these practitioners and ensuring the programme with the
university is a success we will be very grateful. There can then be further cohorts to train more FCPs to
Level 7 for you then to employ through your ARRS funding to make a real impact in your practice and
PCN. The new Roadmap for developing FCPs to true advanced level can be seen here, for interest:
https://www.hee.nhs.uk/sites/default/files/documents/A%20Roadmap%20to%20Practice.pdf This
demonstrates that they are clinically qualified to Advanced Practitioner Masters level; they need
support and experience to attain this in Research, Education, and Management & Leadership, and also
to adapt successfully to primary care.

Please contact us at wy.traininghub@nhs.net by February 26th if you can help one of these physios by
offering them a placement in your practice.

Kind regards,
Marie

offer to support teams is now live.

Following the success of the #LookingAfterYouToo coaching offer, we have expanded
the health and wellbeing offer to include coaching for leaders and managers in
primary care settings.

The new #LookingAfterYourTeam service will create an opportunity for individuals
who lead, manage or organise teams, groups, services or networks, to access
coaching about their team. The coaching conversations will centre around
compassionate and collaborative team leadership to support psychological
wellbeing and resilience.

The free and confidential #LookingAfterYourTeam service is now open for bookings
for 2021, with further information in the attached poster.

Please also see an email banner and social media graphic which can be shared with
your networks and on your channels.

supporting their teams.

We will be promoting the service more widely in 2021, and will be developing

PCPEP for non-ARRS employed pharmacy
  professionals (North) HEE Funding Opportunity
Dear Colleague

CPPE is commissioned by Health Education England to deliver training to PCN employed pharmacy
professionals funded by the Directed Enhanced Service Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme
(ARRS). Information about the Primary Care Pharmacy Education Pathway (PCPEP) can be found on the
following link https://www.cppe.ac.uk/career/pcpep/pcpep-training-pathway

There are a number of PCN employed pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in patient-facing roles who
would like access the Primary Care Pharmacy Education Programme, but are not eligible for these free
places as they are not funded through the ARRS route.

The School of Pharmacy and Medicines Optimisation is pleased to announce that HEE have agreed to
fund a limited number of PCPEP places across the North aimed at pharmacists and pharmacy
technicians not funded through the DES Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme.

See attached the PCPEP eligibility requirements including the need for clinical supervision, and
protected study time.

Employers are invited to submit an expression of interest (EOI) for a North HEE funded place(s) on the
May cohort. Please use the following link to submit your EOI by midnight 1st March 2021.

https://healtheducationyh.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/expressions-of-interest-pcpep-primary-care-pharmacy-

EOI must be made by the employer and not the potential candidate.

NB: the potential candidates must be in post at the time of making the EOI i.e. places cannot be
reserved in anticipation of recruiting to a post. Late submissions will not be accepted. Places will be
allocated by 10th March and employers will be notified of the outcome.

To help inform employers and potential candidates about PCPEP, the eligibility requirements, and
answer any questions CPPE are hosting a webinar via Zoom on the 24th February 1-2pm.

Community Pharmacy Workforce Development
        Expression of Interest Bid NEY
Dear Colleagues

HEE Funding has been agreed to work with LPCs across North East and Yorkshire (NEY), to support with
community pharmacy to better understand opportunities to develop their workforce, identify education
opportunities and associated funding guidance, provide support, and explore new models and ways of working
across the profession and within system.

We are asking Local Pharmaceutical Committee(s)/collaborative to bid for a fund of £30,000 (equivalent to 0.6
WTE NHS band 8b), to work collaboratively across NEY to deliver on agreed outcomes. Bids may be received from
one LPC/organisation or as a collaborative.

We are keen to hear how you see the resource may be effectively utilised to host this post.

Primary outcome
To produce a strategy for community workforce development, with core requirements for the locality, linked to
the integrated care system (ICS) needs.

Expected key outcomes:
To provide a link into system-wide workforce planning processes, including resources to support
To support and promote joint training opportunities and raise awareness of any associated funding (e.g. Primary
Care Training Hubs, CPPE etc)
To link with workforce pharmacy leads and stakeholders within the system (Commissioners, LPN chairs, Pharmacy
Leadership Groups, SoPMO, NHSEI, IPMO etc.)
To identify community pharmacy training needs through a learning needs analysis, and 2 / 10 identify gaps and
suggest how these can be met
To support local workforce/training, e.g. local webinars, joint delivery opportunities (eg CPPE)
To support colleagues in preparation for workforce business cases (e.g. cross-sector trainees)
This is not an exhaustive list and we would welcome your ideas on additional outcomes, to help meet the needs of
the community pharmacy workforce.

The person(s) recruited would be able to link across the School, HEE, Training Hubs and LPCs to identify training
needs, gaps and support bidding processes for community.

If you have any questions, please contact medicinesoptimisation.north@hee.nhs.uk

We welcome expressions of interest to be
submitted via https://healtheducationyh.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/expression-of-interest-for-developing-the-
