Renita PhillipPastor’s Ponderings
What are the most important events in human (or at least Western) history? Depending on the one
answering the question you’ll probably see some of these items on the list:
• Moses and the Exodus ca. 1446 BC
• Reign of Alexander the Great 336-323 BC
• The Pax Romana (The Peace of Rome) 27 BC-180 AD
• Jesus of Nazareth 4 BC – 30 (33?) AD
• Muhammad 571-632
• Magna Carta 1215
• The Renaissance 1300-1600
• Gutenberg’s Printing Press 1450
• The Protestant Reformation 1517-1648
• The American Revolution 1773-1783
• The French Revolution 1789-1799
• World War I 1914-1918
• The Bolshevik Revolution 1917
• World War II 1939-1945
• Fall of the Berlin Wall 1989
But what if we had to narrow it down to the single most important day – what day would it be?
For a Christian there’s only one possible answer: it’s the day that Jesus rose from the dead! No other day
can even begin to compare in importance.
The knowledge that Jesus literally, physically rose from the dead gave His followers the courage to
spread the Good News of the Resurrection. They declared the Gospel despite the fact that almost all of
them paid with their own lives. Yet they never recanted. They couldn’t recant. They knew the truth! They
had seen it with their own eyes. They had spoken to the Resurrected Christ, hearing Him speak with their
own ears. They had touched Him with their own hands. There was no doubt; and consequently, there was
no fear! (Think about it: if Jesus hadn’t truly raisen from the dead, His disciples would have had no reason
to spread a lie, especially since it meant persecution and death to do so.)
The literal, physical resurrection of Jesus Christ from the grave is the only explanation for the
existence of the Christian faith.
The Christian believes that putting one’s faith and trust in Jesus will enable them to also be raised
from the dead for eternity. This isn’t just wishful thinking. Jesus, the One Who rose from the dead, told
His disciples this would happen. (See John 3:15-18 & 36, John 6:40 & 54, John 14:1-6, Romans 8:11, 1
Corinthians 15:20-23, 1 Peter 1:3)
And that Good News continues to be heard to this day. We celebrate this event every Saturday
evening and Sunday morning when we gather to worship. The Resurrection of Christ is the centerpiece of
what we believe. And just as this truth gave the Apostles strength and courage to overcome the difficulties
of life, it does the same for us today.
Billions of people who have put their faith in Christ. As a result each one will know the beauty and
love of eternal life, regardless of their life circumstances on this present earth.
